A film buff who enjoys watching a range of different films from funny rom coms to intense thrillers.

It’s been 11 years when Avatar The Last Airbender ended, but I missed the show. If you have watched the American animated television series, you probably know what I felt when the show concluded in 2008.

Over the past decades, Chinese martial arts have been creating a buzz to people of all ages. I’m one of those children who have fallen in love with the martial arts. With my interests in action movies and animes, I also watched Avatar The Last Airbender from February 2005 to July 2008.

What I like about the series is that it explored many concepts. It doesn’t focus on one theme, making it my number one favorite. It tackled different issues, including war, imperialism, female empowerment, gender discrimination, genocide, and marginalization and oppression.

For an action anime enthusiast, you probably are looking for shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender. Worry no more! You have come to the right place! Here are the top 10 shows I highly recommend. Although there’s nothing that can beat the television series, these shows are something you shouldn’t miss!

TV Shows Similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender

  1. Noragami
  2. Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
  3. D.Gray-Man
  4. Yu Yu Hakusho
  5. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
  6. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
  7. Hunter X Hunter
  8. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  9. The Dragon Prince
  10. The Legend of Korra

#1 Noragami

Are you a fan of the fun-packed episodes of Avatar? Then, you’d probably be interested in an adventure-packed anime. There’s no need to look further than Noragami. It’s about Yato who works hard to gain worshippers by taking different types of odd jobs. He fights phantoms with his weapon in the form of a high school girl (HIYORI) and a deceased teenage boy (YUKINE).

If it’s been years you haven’t seen extreme fight scenes, Noragami will bring your passion back. It is rich with super-powered and fun fight scenes you cannot afford to miss.

Noragami focuses on Japanese religion and culture. For those who like Asian influences in Avatar, you should give this a try. Not only will this let you know the Japanese norms, but you will also experience 100% satisfaction.

#2 Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

Moribito, a fun show, poses a complicated dilemma. As a fan, you might ask whether it’s justifiable to take the life of a child to save a whole nation from widespread famine or drought.

As a prince, Moribito is thought to be a demon by his father. As the emperor, he even ordered someone to kill Moribito. But how did he escape from the assassination? Thanks to his mother, who is charitable, humble, and kind. She requested Balsa, a warrior, to keep her son safe.

As you can see, Moribito is not the typical adventure you watch every day because the hero himself doesn’t have a fun path. But with its historical setting, different themes, and fantasy elements, Moribito should be on top of your list. It’s extremely worth it.

#3 D.Gray-Man

Are you fond of watching some adventures with exorcists and demons? Then, don’t look further than D.Gray-Man. It is about an exorcist named Allen Walker who foil the evil with the help of Kanda, Lenalle, and Lavi.

As a fan of Avatar, I find tragedy an interesting theme, and D.Gray-Man never disappointed me, making it one of my favorites.

Another surprising thing is that the Millenium Earl can revive the dead, in which the former turned the latter into demons. But the good news is that it also goes beyond death or despair.

D. Gray-Man has a dose of action and humor. The heroes themselves are also flawed and complex, making it a simple and awesome story.

#4 Yu Yu Hakusho

Yu Yu Hakusho tells about the story of Yuusuke who died after saving a young boy. Due to his benevolence, the spirits gave him another chance to protect the earth from evil.

Unlike the other shows, it started with a lighthearted adventure. But, as time goes by, it transforms into a story with depth.

Avatar has been known for the charming ensemble of the cast of likable and developed characters. There are also character-driven episodes, which give the audience insights about their personalities. In Yu Yu Hakusho, that kind of experience will be a reality.

#5 Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Are you in search of a story with a unique and ridiculous plot? Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is good to go. Although its world is not well developed, it remains fascinating and perfect for those who love Avatar: the Last Airbender. The lives of the characters are also easy to love. They are well-written, short, and inspiring. While it’s upbeat, it tackles a mature theme that makes a huge difference. It might be one of the shows like Avatar the Last Airbender that is least similar to the others, but still a fantastic watch.

#6 Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

If you are a fan of magic-like animes, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic has got you covered. After Aladdin, Morgiana, and Alibaba, this avatar-packed anime should be your next option.

Interested to see the world and hungry for different adventures, the heroes in the Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic search the world for dungeons. They also come into contact with other characters and different cultures amid the series.

That’s not all. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is rich with lore. It deals with timely avatar themes, including familiar bonds and friendships. While people believe it is only perfect for a young audience, it is also ideal for adults. Plus, it provides many fun and learning experiences for everyone.

#7 Hunter X Hunter

If you’re looking for a show with a protagonist who embarks on adventures to turn his dreams into a reality, Hunter x Hunter is the right fit you can ever have.

The show tells about Gon’s journey in becoming a Hunter (a fierce person who performs dangerous tasks).

As a twelve-year-old young man, Gon has experienced more powerful opponents, in which he learned and improved his skills.

Hunter x Hunter is a grand adventure like the other shows in this list. The characters are greatly fleshed out. Each has some special ability, bringing everyone into a unique world of avatar and anime. It’s also easy to relate and understand.

While some believe it’s only ideal for kids, it has mature themes which are perfect to adults. Thus, it is a one-stop avatar series for people of all ages.

#8 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a story rich with a well-executed plot that you should watch today. Its characters are fully realized and relatable. As the story changes, you’d find it worth your time. It does not only focus on the protagonists themselves, but it also gives justice to other characters.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has a balanced mix of action and comedy. It is intense and fun to watch. There’s no dull moment. From the characters to plots, everything is perfect and awesome. It is philosophically deep and surprisingly mature. There are also tons of fight scenes you’d cherish the most.

The story is about two brothers who struggle to restore their bodies. While Ed lost his arm and leg, Al lost his entire body. Throughout their journey, they both make friends and gain lives.

#9 The Dragon Prince

The Dragon Prince has also created a buzz in different parts of the globe. With its fantasy world in season 1, it has caught the interest of millions of people.

The Dragon Prince season 1 is divided into Xadia (eastern region) and Human Kingdoms (Western Region). Separated by a border of lava, it was under the protection of the Dragon King (Thunder). Killed by a man, thunder’s egg were all destroyed.

The story follows the young princes Ezran and Callum who discovered the dragon prince’s egg. Then, they set out with Rayla to return the egg and prevent war.

With its success, The Dragon Prince season 2 is finally available. While the first season was loved with its animation and plot, there are many things to expect from the Dragon Prince 2. From the story to twists, the show has various surprises. The quality, excitement, and satisfaction will be on the highest level. Thanks to its creators and teams.

#10 The Legend of Korra

Last but not least is the Legend of Korra. While the TLA is about Aang’s journey, the Legend of Korra shows the story of Korra’s growth. It also brings us to the world of other interesting women, including Asami, Jinora, and Lin Beifong.

Other reasons why you should watch the Legend of Korra is that is has a smart blend of science fiction and fantasy. As you start to watch the legend of Korra, it’s quite nostalgic. You’ll remember your experiences in fantasy shows when you were young.

Furthermore, there are delightful side characters. Its theme is about a female friendship and family, making it dramatic and highly relatable.
