7 things that link Full House with Friends

Updated on March 14, 2015

The number 6 and the moving in of old friends:

Full House starts with 6 characters, 3 guys and 3 girls – Danny Tanner, Joey Gladstone, Jesse Katsopolis, D.J Tanner, Stephanie Tanner and Michelle Tanner. The show begins with Jesse and Joey moving in with Danny to take care of his three daughters because Danny’s wife had died in a car accident. Joey is Danny’s best friend since childhood and the move brings them more close to each other. All 6 of them remain throughout show with new characters being added to it along the way.

Friends also start with 6 characters, 3 guys and 3 girls - Monica Geller, Rachel Green, Phoebe Buffay, Ross Geller, Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani. The show begins with Rachel fleeing from her own wedding and finding her school friend Monica. Rachel moves in with Monica and they become roommates. All 6 of them remain throughout the 10 seasons with new characters being added to the show along the way.

Joey

Both shows have a character named Joey - Joey Tribbiani and Joey Gladstone. Other than having the same name both characters are struggling in their own fields. Joey Tribbiani is a struggling actor in Friends and is seen auditioning for different roles throughout the show until he finds a role in a daily soap called “Days of our lives”. Joey Gladstone on the other hand is a struggling stand up comedian in Full House and throughout the show he is seen trying to make a name in the field. Both characters are funny in their own ways and in my opinion they are both underrated as compared to the rest of the cast in the shows. Both Joey Tribbiani and Joey Gladstone also share love for food.

Sibling love

Full House is all about siblings and the relationship between the three sisters. Throughout the show we come across different situations in which the three girls argue with each other or get irritated or tease each other but eventually they always make up and their love for each other always overshadows the sibling rivalry.

While sibling relationship is not the main theme of Friends yet it also reflects on the subject through the characters of Monica and Ross. Both Monica and Ross love each other dearly yet they sometimes have fights as well.

One character acts as the glue

Both Danny and Monica act as the glue that holds together the remaining characters in their respective shows. Danny is the father of the three girls, Joey is his best friend while Jesse is Danny’s brother in law and they all live in Danny’s house. Everyone in Full House looks up to Danny and he acts as the caretaker for the whole house.

In Friends Monica is known as the “Mother Hen” of the group. Monica is Ross’ sister and Chandler’s wife, Rachel is Monica’s childhood friend and Phoebe is also Monica’s friend and her ex-roommate. Joey becomes Monica’s neighbour when he moves in with Chandler. When the friends are not at Central Perk they all hang out at Monica’s apartment. In one of the episodes where Chandler and Monica tell the rest of the friends that they have decided to move to a country side Ross tells Monica that she is the one that holds the group together and therefore she can’t move.

Twins

There are not that many sitcoms in the history of television that have twins in their story lines. That is why it is interesting to note that both Friends and Full House have twins. Full House has a set of twins who play the role of Nicky and Alex and the role of Michelle was played by real life twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. At first the makers of Full House did not reveal that Michelle’s role was being played by two people but later on it became common knowledge.

In Friends Phoebe has a twin sister Ursula who keeps appearing in the show from time to time. Ursula is a complete opposite of Phoebe and cannot care less about her twin sister. However, Phoebe keeps going to Ursula time and again for one reason or the other.

Monica and Chandler also adopt twins in the last season’s final episode.

Clean freaks

Danny Tanner from Full House and Monica Geller from Friends are both clean freaks. They love to clean and organise things and their obsessive nature make them stand out.

Danny has days set for laundry, vacuuming the stairs etc and he is so obsessed with the way things are that he gets upset if even one thing is moved from its place in his room. At one point Danny confessed that his favourite smell is of lemon pledge. In fact his motto is “clean is good, dirt is bad.”

Monica also shares this obsessive nature with Danny. She loves to organise things, clean and even enjoys packing. She often gets into arguments with Rachel who is a total opposite of Monica when it comes to cleaning and organising. Monica refers to her work place as not just health department clean but “Monica clean” which clearly shows her obsession with cleanliness.

Coincidence

There are two coincidences that I have noticed between Full House and Friends. One is John Stamos who plays the role of Uncle Jesse in Full House and appeared as a guest actor in one of the episodes of Friends. John Stamos a.k.a Uncle Jesse appears in Friends as Chandler’s colleague.

Another coincidence is the studios where both the shows were recorded. Full house family was based in San Francisco while the characters of Friends were supposed to be living in Manhattan, New York. However, both shows used the same studios for shooting which is in California. People like me who are kind of obsessed with both shows find it really interesting that of all the people Uncle Jesse would be the one doing a guest appearance in Friends and both shows although portraying two different cities would use the same studios.

Wow, that's crazy lol!!! The reason I ended up here was an episode of Full House where Becky was having the twins, Jessie had appendicitis and Kimmel met a "cute" guy with broken arms and it immediately reminded me of a few different scenes, not sure if all from the same episode; One of the birth scenes (Ross' child, Phoebe's triplets, Rachel's child or Monica & Chandler's twins), Joey's kidney stones during one of the births and Phoebe meeting a "cute" guy with a broken leg.

Great thoughts! I've been watching Fuller House and kept trying to think who grown-up DJ reminds me of... Monica, totally Monica. Now let's link HIMYM to Fuller House, so far Virginia Williams, Alan Thicke, and Laura Bell Bundy have been on! :D

Another coincidence (or joincence) is that Joey Gladstone has the same picture that Joey Tribianni, plus in the Season 3, Episode 11 from Full House.. Joey saids that if he were Santa Claus he liked to shake his belly like a bowl full of jelly.. this exact sentence is told by Chandel (dress like Santa) in The one with the Holiday Armadillo in Friends S.7 E.10
