Sing to My Soul as You Sleep, Sweet Eva

Updated on February 22, 2018

Follow this writer on her journey through life, as she shares her thoughts & experiences, while creating ideal Retirement Living.

Do not make a sound. Just close your eyes, inhale deeply, exhale and LISTEN.

Wiping away the tears from my face and waiting for the goosebumps to settle.

Let me tell you just a little about Eva Cassidy, the girl with the voice of an Angel. Not only was Eva a talented yet humble young woman, it seems she was too precious for this world. Tragically, Eva succumbed to melanoma at the tender age of 33, before her star could shine much further than her native Washington, D.C.

It was in this city that Eva would appear, guitar in hand, to perform in local dimly-lit and smoky clubs and cafes. Even at that early time of her musical career, she had a substantial following of local fans and dedicated friends. Such a wide variety of enthusiastic fans that an audio tape was sent by one of her fans to an executive of recording studio promoters, all the way to England.

Two radio personalities of BBC Radio 2 were so impressed by what they heard, they immediately introduced Eva's music to British audiences. From there, it became an Eva Explosion, with people calling the station, writing letters with questions about this as yet, unknown fabulous performer. The internet at this point, not at the fingertips of the entire world, it was a while before the sad reality about Eva was widely spread to these thousands of new fans, now shaken by grief.

My own discovery of Miss Eva Cassidy, happened quite inadvertently about 15 years ago. I admit, I fell instantly in love with her and without question, her story tore at my heart. I literally felt a heaviness as though I had known her forever.

The bit I have told you about Eva, has been information off the cuff, based solely on memory of the frantic research I did so many years ago. I wanted to know all that was available to know.

If you have an interest in the longer version of Eva's story, I invite you to sit back, relax and watch the edition of ABC Nightline with Chris Bury. ( only 15 minutes) I'll be back to say, "Good Bye," after you've watched this video.

ABC Nightline with Chris Bury: "Eva Cassidy"

Yes, I know how you're feeling.

It's my turn now, to let you wipe away your tears. I'll simply say, "Thank you for reading about a singer I love, the late Eva Cassidy." I'm so eager to read your thoughts. It really is "A Wonderful World."

Audrey.......Our beautiful songbird, how thrilled I am that you have come here today to hear "Eva," and are so moved by her incomparable sound. Yes, the same words and accolades, "stunning," "magical," "angelic," ~ all of these and more, belong to this precious soul. She does defy our simple language of praise, that somehow falls short of miraculous.

Eva is who I run to, who I am comforted by as she carries me far from all disappointment or despair that dares to steal my joy.

For me, there can be no other healing, no voice that brings my restless soul to pure solace, as the haunting vibrations of "Eva Cassidy."

It is you who is incredible, sweet Audrey. Peace, Paula

    Dear Paula,

As a singer, "Over The Rainbow" has been my signature song. I am tremendously humbled after hearing this stunning, remarkable singer, Eva Cassidy. Without a doubt, her voice is incomparable! Her velvety tone is magical. I just can't say enough about this beautiful, angelic voice.

Thank you for introducing her to me. The videos are well worth watching. You have given me a very special gift. But then, you are a very special person and friend.

May you realize what an incredible person you are!

Tim....I believe I've been obvious about my fascination with Eva, her music & brief life. I also believe, had she been allowed to remain here more years, she'd have always been as modest, sincere & dedicated to her individuality as she was. Her success was low-key but powerful. Thanks for the visit. Peace, Paula

    Hi, Paula,

I had to read this. Eva was gifted and blessed. She sings "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with a haunting sound that leaves my soul longing to be with Him.

As I listened to her, and read about her early departure from our reality, I couldn't help but think about Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, who did a wonderful rendition of the song. I first heard his version on that infamous fabulous show: Coast to Coast AM, a show I tune into at night when I can't sleep. He died early, without receiving the recognition for his haunting version performed with a Hawaiian flavor.

Just thinking about the comments I read between you and another reader, I wonder if that song may be a bit haunted.

I watched the video you provided, and I really enjoyed your work. Thanks for introducing me to Eva.

    Much respect,

Yes, Ann...according to Eva's tale, I see that you lucky people in England were introduced to her and her exceptional music, even before most of the U.S. was, with the exception of her home area.

It's an enormous tragedy that she was taken from this world. IMHO, she'd have been a huge international celebrity/icon. Talent and voices like Eva's are rare. Thanks for visiting! Peace, P

So sad when people are taken far too early. I did know about Eva Cassidy's music but not that she died. At least there's a legacy in her voice that never dies.

Paula, this is almost as spooky as when my hubby's phone called my phone and both in separate rooms and I in another just hours after he passed, and I am sure he was telling me he was/is safely home, so I am sure our connection is a positive one.

    Love ya too, more Blessings.

Shyron! How nice to see you! I am sufficiently "Spooked out!." I actually thought about you this morning!....and then I go online to see your comment on my Eva Hub!! Spirits somewhere are moving between us for some important least that's my belief on such out-of-the-ordinary occurrences like this.

I choose to also believe, this can only mean something positive for us.....

Every time I think about this, I get goose bumps! I thought about YOU out of the thought about ME when you heard a song ...and your words, "here I am" made me gasp!....I literally got tears to my eyes immediately!.

Just so you know, I do NOT believe in "Coincidence" certainly not in a case as stunning as this.

I will pay close attention & hope that you do as well. No doubt in my mind, a power much stronger than me or you had a hand in this. I can't imagine why, but am open to something wonderful..

I can only wonder if it is Eva's spirit connecting us for a reason?

If I listen to her infamous rendition of "Over the Rainbow," a hundred times, it brings me to goosebumps and tears, a hundred times.

I'm sure as fellow-writers, we all learn from one another. Thank you. P.

Paula- this is just amazing. A gentleman I work with has been telling me about Eva Cassidy for the last month. Prior to that I'd never heard of her. He and I share a lot of the same musical interests and are fans of the same artists, Judy Collins, John Denver, Glen Campbell etc. Now I'm a fan of Eva. This is absolutely the best rendition of Over the Rainbow I've ever heard. I can't wait to hear more of her music. You're an excellent writer, by the way. I love your opening line. "Do not make a sound. Just close your eyes, inhale deeply, exhale and LISTEN." Fantastic. I'm taking a writing course from AWAI right now and you did exactly what the experts describe: Hook me with a bold statement that demands my attention, makes me want to GIVE my attention. I think I'm going to learn a lot from you, my sensai!

She has a most beautiful voice and the creativity of her talent shows. The video did justice to her as best it could. For whatever reasons, sometimes we do not make it to the limelight. She was probably very spiritual too. I like your title. God bless her soul in heaven.

Curse you, Paula. I hate getting all teared up. I think the only other name so closely associated with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" would be Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. I hadn't heard of Eva before...but what a beautiful voice! She transcended the small clubs she performed in, and "the pigeon holes" in which others try to slot performers. Paula, based on your own words, "Eva Cassidy, the girl with the voice of an Angel'... and "she was too precious for this world" I would have only one explanation. Simirlarly as many "gifts" throughout the history were "sent" with a mission to humanity, not being appropriately received and cherished - thus they were "prematuraly "summon back ” simply because of whom the world was not worthy...

Yves...I'm not surprised you appreciate Eva's authenticity and her immense talent.. I love your description of her voice as "expensive crystal." Perfect.
