Sing to My Soul as You Sleep, Sweet Eva
Do not make a sound. Just close your eyes, inhale deeply, exhale and LISTEN.
Wiping away the tears from my face and waiting for the goosebumps to settle.
Let me tell you just a little about Eva Cassidy, the girl with the voice of an Angel. Not only was Eva a talented yet humble young woman, it seems she was too precious for this world. Tragically, Eva succumbed to melanoma at the tender age of 33, before her star could shine much further than her native Washington, D.C.
It was in this city that Eva would appear, guitar in hand, to perform in local dimly-lit and smoky clubs and cafes. Even at that early time of her musical career, she had a substantial following of local fans and dedicated friends. Such a wide variety of enthusiastic fans that an audio tape was sent by one of her fans to an executive of recording studio promoters, all the way to England.
Two radio personalities of BBC Radio 2 were so impressed by what they heard, they immediately introduced Eva's music to British audiences. From there, it became an Eva Explosion, with people calling the station, writing letters with questions about this as yet, unknown fabulous performer. The internet at this point, not at the fingertips of the entire world, it was a while before the sad reality about Eva was widely spread to these thousands of new fans, now shaken by grief.
My own discovery of Miss Eva Cassidy, happened quite inadvertently about 15 years ago. I admit, I fell instantly in love with her and without question, her story tore at my heart. I literally felt a heaviness as though I had known her forever.
The bit I have told you about Eva, has been information off the cuff, based solely on memory of the frantic research I did so many years ago. I wanted to know all that was available to know.
If you have an interest in the longer version of Eva's story, I invite you to sit back, relax and watch the edition of ABC Nightline with Chris Bury. ( only 15 minutes) I'll be back to say, "Good Bye," after you've watched this video.
Mick Fleetwood talks about Eva
Yes, I know how you're feeling.
It's my turn now, to let you wipe away your tears. I'll simply say, "Thank you for reading about a singer I love, the late Eva Cassidy." I'm so eager to read your thoughts. It really is "A Wonderful World."
