Sing to My Soul as You Sleep, Sweet Eva

Updated on September 21, 2017
fpherj48 profile image

With decades of writing on many different topics, upon a path behind her now, Paula shares one of "her favorite things" with her readers...

Do not make a sound. Just close your eyes, inhale deeply, exhale.....and LISTEN....

Wiping away the tears from my face and waiting for the goosebumps to settle.....

Let me tell you just a little about Eva Cassidy, the girl with the voice of an Angel. Not only was Eva a talented yet humble young woman, it seems she was too precious for this world. Tragically, Eva succumbed to melanoma at the tender age of 33, before her star could shine much further than her native Washington, D.C.

It was in this city that Eva would appear, guitar in hand, to perform in local dimly-lit and smoky clubs and cafes. Even at that early time of her musical career, she had a substantial following of local fans and dedicated friends. Such a wide variety of enthusiastic fans that an audio tape was sent by one of her fans to an executive of recording studio promoters, all the way to England.

Two radio personalities of BBC Radio 2 were so impressed by what they heard, they immediately introduced Eva's music to British audiences. From there, it became an Eva Explosion, with people calling the station, writing letters with questions about this as yet, unknown fabulous performer. The internet at this point, not at the fingertips of the entire world, it was a while before the sad reality about Eva was widely spread to these thousands of new fans, now shaken by grief.

My own discovery of Miss Eva Cassidy, happened quite inadvertently about 15 years ago. I admit, I fell instantly in love with her and without question, her story tore at my heart. I literally felt a heaviness as though I had known her forever.

The bit I have told you about Eva, has been information off the cuff, based solely on memory of the frantic research I did so many years ago. I wanted to know all that was available to know.

If you have an interest in the longer version of Eva's story, I invite you to sit back, relax and watch the edition of ABC Nightline with Chris Bury. ( only 15 minutes) I'll be back to say, "Good Bye," after you've watched this video.

ABC Nightline with Chris Bury: "Eva Cassidy"

Yes, I know how you're feeling..........

It's my turn now, to let you wipe away your tears. I'll simply say, "Thank you for reading about a singer I love, the late Eva Cassidy." I'm so eager to read your thoughts. It really is "A Wonderful World."

Paula, I had to get a message to you that know you will see so I came to this hub of yours. I tear up now trying to type this and I don't want to go into details here in public, but I want you to know and to please believe me when I say I heard the things you said and took more to heart than you know. Now I believe strongly your words may help save someone's life. They rang loud and clear in my head tonight when I had to pass your words onto someone else who doesn't understand. All I can now is thank you. This is someone that I love. You can hate me forever and think the worst of me, but thank you. I have no other way to show you my appreciation but to say as much as I'm willing here. That's all. You don't even have to respond.

Paula, based on your own words, "Eva Cassidy, the girl with the voice of an Angel'... and "she was too precious for this world" I would have only one explanation. Simirlarly as many "gifts" throughout the history were "sent" with a mission to humanity, not being appropriately received and cherished - thus they were "prematuraly "summon back ” simply because of whom the world was not worthy...

    Peace.

HOLY Snit!! Sha...How dare I jump right over you like that? I'll drive right on down there so you can kick my ass! LOL

The truth is, I actually remember responding to your comment....so the only explanation is I ran off like a DITZ w/o POSTING. I seem to have that nasty habit!

    Mea Culpa.............P

Susan .... we have more in common than MOM & Gram of Twin boys!! Dry your tears....I understand and sending a hug. Eva makes me cry every single time. One, because her voice is haunting and 2 because I feel the sadness of a young life lost....and such a sweet girl with pure heart! Smile...Paula

I can't listen to this song without crying, my dad used to sing it all the time.

Too young to die. What a shame that she was taken too soon.

KC....Positive reactions are easy to expect, due to Eva's performances and the incredible tragedy of her premature demise. She effortlessly steals hearts.

Knowing my own emotions can bring me sobbing to my knees, I cannot imagine how overwhelming it was to witness her singing, "It's a Wonderful World" at her benefit and final performance.

    Thanks for visiting.

Maria...How did I suspect you may be one of the few who would have been somewhat familiar with Eva? We still don't know as much about this talented Angel as I would like. I'd be willing to bet a large sum that no one will ever touch her rendition of Over the Rainbow....Thanks for your input, Maria. Peace, Paula

Thank you, Paula, for sharing this wonderful tribute to this beautiful singer. The last video reminded me of if having heard her on the radio. I never knew she passed away from cancer. What a loss to our word from a very advanced soul. I will share both videos and play it over again and again.

Allow me to acknowledge your comments and thank you, in order, from the bottom up.......

Rupert...I feel your disappointment in never having the chance to be Eva's fan in life. A very sad tale.

Mike....Some things are simply beyond the comprehension of a sane & moral human. Perhaps it's best this way. Deep sadness is often all we can handle.

Bro....For every loss of a kind and loving human being who wishes only to give and receive love and comfort, we feel the blow, a hundred fold...Hugs, Sis

Yves...I'm not surprised you appreciate Eva's authenticity and her immense talent.. I love your description of her voice as "expensive crystal." Perfect.

FA...Maybe if we just believe she knows she is loved by her fans, it will hurt a bit less. It's comforting to have her voice with us still.

Jackie....I'm happy to have introduced Eva and to know you appreciate her beautiful talent. Her music literally carries me away.

Everyone....Thanks so much for your positive responses. PJ

Wow....a remarkable talent, Eva Cassidy. Had never heard of her. Her voice is like expensive crystal---clear, sharp, exquisite.

No doubt, Eva lived true to her convictions. I imagine her spirit, singing still, somewhere "over the rainbow."

Paula, Thank you for introducing us to this rare soul.

There are times, Sis, when I think we live in a cesspool of ugliness, but then I hear something like this and my heart soars with hope. I don't know why the good ones are taken from us at such a young age, but I know we are poorer as a species because of those losses. Thank you for sharing her story with us. I think I'll go wipe some tears now.

    hugs

Hello Paula - What a beautiful soul that was taken. Her sweet voice is light and refreshing. It is beyond my understanding how the young are taken so early. Many things are beyond my understanding.

Thanks for introducing me to a gentle voice.
