Some notable Nigerian music stars

Nigerian music has taking shape ever since the birth of the legendary Kennis Music as a force to reckon with not just in Africa, but globally as well. In all humility I write this piece as a way of congratulating many of our music stars for doing the country proud on the global stage.

From picking up awards at major international events such as The Channel O music video awards, the Kora awards, Mobo Awards, BET awards, World Music Awards, MTV European Music Awards and of recent the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) as well as the Ghana Music Awards and even nominations for the prestigious Grammy Awards to making hundreds of thousands of dollars from performance fees, endorsements and even record sales, many Nigerian musicians are becoming global music Icons in their own right. These days it is not unusual to hear of Nigerian artistes being lined up to perform at major international concerts. Here are a few notable music stars from Nigeria.

The most notable among them is Tuface Innocent Idibia also Known as 2face. One time a member of one of Nigeria’s hottest boy groups the Plantashion Boyz comprising 2face, Black face and Faze, he left the group in 2004 to start a solo career that has brought him both fame and wealth. He became the first African to win an award (Best African Act for his hit single African Queen) at the 2006 MTV European music Awards held in Portugal. It was 2face that set the pace for other notable Nigerian acts such as Psquare, 9ice, Banky W, D’banj, Wande Cole, Dare Art Alade, M I among others who are now internationally renowned artistes. Locally though 2face still faces competition from several upcoming artistes but has been the most successful entertainer in Nigeria since 2005. By net worth 2face is probably Nigeria’s 2nd richest artiste after the legendary Veteran of Juju Music King Sunny Ade (KSA).

Whose real name is OyeDeji Adebanjo is a returnee musician having been based in the United Kingdom till he made a return to Nigeria in 2007 for good. He is especially noted for his skillful use of the harmonica which in addition to his singing has made him extremely popular. He too has won many international awards such as the best African Act at the MTV European Awards in 2008, the KORA awards, Channel O music Awards, the MAMA and the Hip Hop World Awards among others. He is also one of Africa’s highest paid acts earning as much as $ 100,000 weekly.

Fast rising rap artiste Emmanuel Obaga, MI is an incredibly talented lyricist who has easily dethroned Mode 9 as Nigeria’s best rapper. He unlike most Nigerian rappers is a hard core hip hop artiste and has also won many international awards.

P Square

Twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye are a perfect match for a music group. They both sing and dance well so well that they always have sold out concerts. Unlike most Nigerian musicians who cannot lay claims to substantial revenue from record sales, P Square always sell millions of copies of their albums both locally in Nigeria and in some African Countries, they  have an incredible fan base and are almost worshipped by many of their female fans. They are rumoured to be worth over $ 5 million and can even afford to live in 5 star hotels rather than rent or own their own home.

Banky W

Another fast rising music star in Nigeria is handsome Bankole Wellington aka Banky W who was born into a priviledged family unlike most local artistes and is Nigeria’s most successful R & B artiste. His last Album Strong thing has been a commercial success turning him into a mega bucks earning star. He too like D’banj, 2face and MI is a brand ambassador for several companies and has earned mouth watering fees in the process. Of course Banky W has also won several awards although mostly local but he has earned a number of international nominations.

Dare Art Alade

Easily a rival with Banky W in the R & B category, Dare as he is known locally is another award winning artiste who hasn’t had much commercial success with his record sales but has to his credit lucrative performance fees from endorsements, concerts and shows. Although based in Abuja which isn’t the heartbeat of Nigerian music Dare is still a well paid artiste.

These are just some of the most successful music stars in Nigeria. There are still many more such as 9ice, Timaya, KC Presh, Wande Cole, Durella, Sasha, Sauce Kid, SID and many more who are fast rising artistes putting Nigeria on the global map of music greatness.
