A Boy in search of Himself

"Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You " is a 2011 comedy-drama movie, directed by Roberto Faenza and realized by a co-production between Italy and USA. The movie is based on a novel with the same title and written by Peter Cameron. It's protagonist is a boy who doesn't think to fit with society of his time and who doesn't like to spend time with other boys. The protagonist and some of the topics present in this novel are very similar to the ones you can find in "The Catcher In The Rye", the famous novel written by J. D. Salinger.

The protagonist of the Peter Cameron's novel and of the movie is James Sveck, a boy who likes to stay alone and whose hobbies are reading, manual works and enjoying time with his grandmother Nanette. We can say he simply doesn't like to feel part of the society he refuses, and that's why he always wants to stay alone. He even doesn't want to go to university because of his refuse of society: his big dream is to retire in a house in the country and live alone inside it.

The Official Trailer in Italian Language

The boy's mother is an art gallery owner who divorced and changed husband several times, while his father is a businessman who is obsessed with its physical aspect: he cares about it in order to be accepted by very young girls. Finally the boy has also a sister, who writes her memories and who tries to have a relationship with a 50 years old teacher. A family seen as crazy by James! But a part the singular and strange aspects of every member of the family, James's mother is seriously worried about the boy's attitude to society and about the fact he doesn't want to go to university, and that's why she decides to send James to a psychotherapist. James's life is divided among his work at the art gallery owned by his mother, the meetings with the psychoterapist (meetings that start with James who is very closed in himself, but in the next meetings he will get confidence with the terapist) and the times spent with his grandmather.

A Movie about a Boy's Life

The first aspect of the movie is that this is not a movie in which happen particular facts. It is a movie set around the life of James, so the actions you will see in the movie are all related to James's life of everyday. This movie has not the aim to show particular actions, but it has the purpose of describing James at the best and of showing his attitude to life.

This movie is a comedy-drama: there are some parts that will make you laugh (for example when James decides to trick his work colleague and chat with him on a meeting website with a different name, or also when James asks his father if he is gay in the elevator, in front of the very young girl he wants to go out with). But the main plot is set about the sadness of James, which will be also recalled in the last part of the movie, when his grandmother Nanette dies: in fact she leaves James all her things, and also a piece of sheet with the following phrase written on it:

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You

— Nanette

This expresses the real meaning of what James suffers: all the pain he is suffering now, will be useful for him in the future, in order to deal with all difficulties of life.
