Updated on November 15, 2011

Sons of Anarchy is one of the best shows on prime time today

Sons of Anarchy is one of the best shows on television today with some of the best writers around. Dont allow the premise to fool you into thinking it is shallow without depth of character, plots and story lines.

SAMCRO is the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original chapter

Sons of Anarchy is a show that is biting and on the edge. These are characters that you simply cannot turn away from each week and the writers make them powerful each episode for the depth and understanding that goes into each of them.

Many people that initially tuned into the show every Tuesday on FX figured they were going to watch a biker bar with fist fights after a night of drinking. What they got was something they never expected. There are of course the bikers on the outside, but inside you begin to delve into things you never would have imagined. There are extremely powerful women that stand behind the Sons of Anarchy members that many people are not aware of and should take note. SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original) is the biker gang and membership is for men only. However, the women of the members of the club make the men. The women of the Sons of Anarchy make the show stand out from other shows on television today.

SAMCRO Women

Gemma Teller Morrow

Gemma is the wife of the president of the Charming chapter President Clay Morrow and the widow of the former president John Teller. Clay is severely lacking in leadership skills and Gemma takes over the role of leader of the gang in more ways than one. She has identified Clay’s shortcomings both mentally and physically and plays him like a fiddle. She is a women that thinks ten steps ahead and doesn’t take no for an answer. There is only one person that Gemma is admitted afraid of and she is Fiona a woman that is part of the IRA back in Ireland and spouse to one of the members of the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club .

John Teller, her first hubby was a born leader that felt the motorcycle club going in the wrong direction and paid for trying to change that direction with his life. Gemma is aware of the gruesome details of her first husband’s death and does everything in her power to keep that secret while at the same time making certain her one surviving son Jax does not find himself in the same position.

Gemma talks directly with SAMCRO members to tell them what they need to hear to get them to bend to the direction the chapter should go in. She has been a leader that is lacking in Clay Morrow. She is acutely aware of all of the business of the club. Though, she doesn’t have a vote or say in what they do one way or another they do whatever the Queen of Charming would like. She runs the city with an iron fist and is grooming Jax’s “wife to be” Tara Knowles to follow in her footsteps. What can you say about a grandmother like Gemma Teller Morrow? Gemma Teller Morrow is certainly not a grandmother that will be baking cookies for the Girl Scout Troop anytime soon.

Tara Knowles

Tara Knowles is the fiancé of Jax and the mother of his son Thomas. Tara and Jax were in love during high school and she left Charming when she was 19 years old out of a need to get away from the club as well as life in a small town. After she became a doctor she returned back the small town of Charming and Jax.

She saved the life of Jax’s first born son Abel when he was born with a defective heart and has been moving her way back to Jax since then. Secretly she has helped various members of SAMCRO and Gemma has taken her under her wing as the next great lady of the club and Jax’s wife as well as the mother of both of his sons. Although Gemma deep down doesn’t care for Tara because she broke her son’s heart she understands the importance of keeping Tara close and her son happy. She has continued to support Gemma both medically and as Jax’s mother. They hold a grudging respect for one another.

Jax has pushed Tara in and out of his life trying to protect her from the club and their way of life while Tara wants a normal life but cannot seem to leave Jax and Jax cannot seem to choose between her and the club. She has accepted Jax and the club with Jax’s promise to give it up. Tara has survived her parents death, being abducted because of her relationship with Jax by a rival gang member and has found the important letters from Jax’s father to his son concerning his ill feelings for SAMCRO and where the gang was headed before his suspicious death. The end of his letters does reveal that John was killed by his wife Gemma and his best friend Clay. Holding this secret and holding on to Jax in addition to the hope for a normal life outside of SAMCRO is what has kept Tara going time and time again.

Other women

Other women around the biker gang are women that are involved in the world of drugs and prostitution. They are proprietors of pornography businesses and members of the IRA or Irish Republican Army. These are women that are the “old ladies” , mothers and wives of the members of the club and each of them brings not only her baggage to the table, but strength of character in most cases that cannot be measured. Although many come and go throughout the Sons of Anarchy series the majority of them are in it for the long haul and they never seem to surprise the viewer with how they mirror the weakness found within the individual Sons of Anarchy members and take those weaknesses and turn them around into strengths for each individual member of the club.

Conclusion

Don’t get the story twisted and imagine that the women of the Sons of Anarchy are all warm and fuzzy because they certainly are not. However, they unselfishly time and time again make the men into something they aren’t, but certainly have the potential to be without the men of the city of Charming that belong to the Sons of Anarchy not even knowing it.

The women are intelligent, strong and resilient in the face of adversity on the Sons of Anarchy and though this show is really in your face for the most part there are some complexities of character that cannot be ignored.
