Southern Super Stars

Several actresses from South Indian movies has acted in Hindi (Bollywood) cinema. In fact, actresses from South India have dominated Hindi film industry. Like Sridevi, from Tamil / Telugu film industries moved to Bollywood; and she was not only successful, but become number one there.

Actresses like Hema Malini, Bhanupriya, Jaya Prada, Rati Agnihotri , Vyjayantimala – all have dominated Hindi cinema during their time. Even in recent time south Indian actresses are doing good number of films in Bollywood. Genelia D'Souza, Ileana D'Cruz, Shruthi Haasan, Shriya Saran, Tamannaah Bhatia and Asin are working in Hindi movies and some of their movies tasted success at the box office.

Rama Rao), Shivaji Ganesh, Raj Kumar were all popular down South, but they did not act in Bollywood films. But the new generation of actors from South India are trying their hands in moving to Hindi film industries.

Popular Tamil actors Kamal Hassan and Rajini have done couple of movies in Hindi and they were successful too. Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh and Nagarjuna tried their luck in Bollywood unsuccessfully.

The current lot of South Indian actors from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film industries are trying to get a foot hold in Hindi cinema.

Here are some of these actors who are looking for greater exposures by doing Hindi cinema.

Great hub. I think it's difficult for the male stars to balance the regional movies with Hindi movies as they cannot leave their huge regional fan base. May be female stars doesn't need to face that.

@MSDora: Thanks for your compliments. I am big fan of movies - Indian movies. I closely follow the stars of Indian film industries.

@IndianChef: Your observation is very true. Rajni & Kamal has not given consistent mega hits. Kamal's "ek duje ke liye" was mega hit. Bearing this, his subsequent did not fare well his movies do in Tamil. It is same with Rajni. His recent "Robet" was success in Hindi, but its Tamil original was bigger - rather biggest hit.

I fail to understand why male stars don't make it big pan-India.

Zanaworld, though heroines from South has been very popular in Bollywood like Hema, Sridevi, vajantimala to name a few but even the biggest male stars were not able to make much of name in bollywood, Rajani and Kamala were not mega hits, just gave very few hit movies and that too onlymoderate. Any thoughts on it?
