Shamrock Clip Art
The shamrock is the national emblem of Ireland. It represents the young leaves of the clover plant and was used by the real St. Patrick to teach his religion in Ireland.
The shamrock clip art in this section is perfect for St. Patrick's Day, or for representing Irish tradition on any day of the year.
Because people are expected to wear green on St. Patrick's Day even if they aren't Irish, choosing a green shamrock to wear is the perfect way to keep from getting pinched.
The shamrock images in this section are all cartoon shamrocks. There are a lot of smiley-faced shamrocks here.
You can grow your own shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day with this kit which includes every thing you need, even the soil from Ireland.
It comes with a hand-crafted planter from Ireland and genuine Irish shamrock seeds, authenticated by the government of Ireland.

Four-Leaf Clovers and Luck of the Irish
It is estimated that you have a one in 10,000 chance of finding a four-leaf clover in a clover patch. That means that you are pretty lucky if you find one and that is why the four-leaf shamrock represents luck.
You'll see many of these images on St. Patrick's Day, where they represent the 'luck of the Irish.'
Pass on a little luck with the gorgeous four-leaf shamrock pendant featured at the right. A lucky lass will get this shamrock with real diamonds!
Leprechauns have been part of Irish folklore for more than a thousand years. They are inhabitants of the enchanted fairy kingdom and are known to live among mushroom patches. They always come out on St. Patrick's Day.
They are sometimes just the size of a toadstool, but some of them grow up to be two feet tall.
You can visit leprechauns at the National Leprechaun Museum in Dublin, Ireland.
You'll often see a leprechaun with a shillelagh, which is sometimes a walking cane and sometimes a club.
A leprechaun really doesn't need help in walking – in fact, you'll often see a leprechaun dancing the famous Irish Jig with his shillelagh high in the air as he kicks up his feet.
Leprechauns actually use their shillelaghs to defend their pots of gold.
The Boston Celtics Basketball team uses an image of a leprechaun leaning on a shillelagh in its logo.

Leprechauns Dancing the Irish Jig
If you've never seen the Irish Jig, watch the video on the right. This is from a dance competition and all of the participants have Irish costumes.
In the Jig, the dancers keep their backs straight and their arms down and stiff. All of the action is in the feet and in high-kicks.
You can't dance the Jig without traditional Irish music. If you are planning a party for St. Patrick's Day, don't forget the Jig music!
Besides, leprechaun's love music and can play all of the Irish musical instruments. With the right music, you might just have a leprechaun or two show up and join the fun.
You'll see leprechauns dancing and playing instruments in the St. Pat's Day images below:
Harps Clip Art
Ireland has always had harps in its imagery. Harps were used by ancient story tellers, called bards, to accompany folk tales. You'll see a lot of harps come out to play on St. Patty's Day!
Leprechauns have many faces in imagery. Just like people, no two are alike. They could use their own Facebook site!
They are often depicted smoking a long pipe.
Some leprechauns have pointed ears and some don't. Some of them even have pointed noses and toes.
About half of leprechauns have long beards and a high percentage of them have red beards.
They are usually laughing or joking, because they are always up to some mischief.
And one other thing: They almost always wear green clothes.
Pot of Gold and Rainbow
Every leprechaun has a pot of gold which he hides at the end of a rainbow. Sometimes, if you're really lucky, you can persuade a leprechaun to give you some gold.
But, first you have to find his hiding place.
Leprechauns keep moving their gold with each rainbow, so right after it rains is a good time to find one. Leprechauns are known to try to trick you, so be on your guard.

There would be no St. Patrick's Day without Ireland because that's where the whole tale of Patrick took place.
From there, Irish immigrants have transplanted the holiday to every county they went to and they took the Irish flag with them.
You can leave Ireland, but Ireland never leaves you!
Why Do People Drink Beer on St. Patrick's Day?
Why do people drink beer (and Irish whiskey) on St. Patrick's Day? Well, the holiday falls right in the middle of the Catholic Lent season when people try to give up something pleasurable, like drinking beer.
Because the Irish wouldn't give up beer for St. Patty's Day, one of the Popes made a special proclamation that drinking on this holiday was allowed. The Irish thanked Mr. Pope, but they had already made their own exception for the holiday! You see, there never has been an Irish pope, so the Irish are mighty pleased that they were able to alter a decision from Rome. And, they drink to that!
If you have a party, you need party hats. For this holiday, that means leprechaun hats.
There are several styles of leprechaun hats so you can order a selection for your party.
The hat featured at the right is made of felt and is hand-washable so you can use it year after year.
