Summer 2012 Playlist - Songs For The Summer

Updated on June 12, 2012

20 Songs That Will Make It Big This Summer

You don't need to read this article to know that music can act as a powerful trigger where memories are involved. Hearing Katy Perry's 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)', 'Party Rock Anthem' by LMFAO, or maybe Maroon 5's 'Moves Like Jagger' should powerfully remind you of last summer, or so says dozens of '2011 Summer Songs' playlists. There's bound to be a song or two that you can't hear without being forcefully reminded of last summer, the summer before that, and even the summer before that.

With that being said, 2012's summer is upon us, and with it comes waves of new music. Within these waves are songs that will eventually be known as '2012 Summer Songs'. Here are 20 songs that are sure to make the list.

(If any of the music videos below give you the message 'Video Player Is Too Small', click the bottom-right YouTube button to view it)

1. Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen

Robbie Daw, writer for CNN, predicted in this article that 'Call Me Maybe' is not just a song for Summer 2012, but the song of 2012, despite tough competition from songs like Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' or 'Payphone' by Maroon 5. 'Call Me Maybe' currently sits at Number 1 on iTunes.

2. Drunk On You - Luke Bryan

Currently Number 10 on iTune's top songs list, Luke Bryan's lyrics 'I'm a little drunk on you and high on summertime' are sure to blow up Facebook on a nightly basis.

3. We Are Young - Fun.

Released six months ago, 'We Are Young' still remains on iTune's Top Songs List, coming in at 18th place. 'We are young' could be the motto for many out-of-schoolers this summer and Fun. has provided the theme song.

4. Payphone - Maroon 5

The words you've said every time you turn on the radio have finally been put in to a song: 'One more stupid love song, I'll be sick'. It'll be hard to go anywhere this summer without hearing Maroon 5's wildly popular song 'Payphone', featuring Wiz Khalifa.

5. Brokenhearted - Karmin

Karmin's all-too-true lyrics in 'Brokenhearted' may apply to you this summer: waiting all day for that one person to text or call you. Tired of waiting? Take the initiative and text them! Because who knows? Maybe they've been waiting all day for you to call them.

6. Wild One - Flo Rida

Throwing a summer dance party? With plenty of bass, a little bit of dubstep, and upbeat lyrics from Flo Rida this song is an absolute must-have.

7. Light - Ellie Goulding

'Lights' just recently dropped down from iTune's Top 10, earning a place at Number 12. Ellie Goulding's hit has 15 million views on YouTube and the songs upbeat tempo makes it perfect for a summer party.

8. Boyfriend - Justin Bieber

Floppy-haired Bieber broke records with his single 'Boyfriend'. It took only 24 hours for the video to be viewed 8 million times, the record for any video to be viewed in one day. That number has increased by almost ten times since its release on May 3rd and if 'Call Me Maybe' doesn't take the champion's place as song of the summer, then 'Boyfriend' is sure to win the title.

9. Starships - Nicki Minaj

No summer party playlist is complete with out Nicki's 'Starships'. The song has been extremely successful on both iTunes and YouTube, racking in 40 million views.

10. Drive By - Train

Train's 'Drive By' wasted no time in becoming a Top 10 hit in thirteen different countries. It currently sits at Number 20 on iTunes and the music video has recorded over 30 million views in just 4 months.

11. Glad You Came - The Wanted

You may be surprised to learn that 'Glad You Came' was released late last summer. The song recently took off again and may be a summer hit this year, a title it missed out on last year due to its late release. Nearly a year later and the song still has a spot on iTune's Top 30.

12. I Don't Want This Night To End - Luke Bryan

Luke Bryan is the only artist with two songs on this Top 20 List, and with good reason. 'I Don't Want This Night To End' will be another song quoted on Facebook nightly this summer.

13. Where Have You Been - Rihanna

What playlist is complete without a song or two from Rihanna? 'Where Have You Been' is going to be a favorite among many this summer and won't be leaving iTune's Top 10 for a long while.

14. Scream - Usher

The booming bass and catchy lyrics is going to make Usher's 'Scream' one of the best summer party songs in 2012. Any time you're going to be dancing, make sure 'Scream' finds it way on to your playlist.

15. Wide Awake - Katy Perry

Hits like 'I Kissed a Girl', 'California Gurls', 'Teenage Dreams', and 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)' have crowned Katy Perry as Summer-Song-Queen for the last few years and it's very possible that 'Wide Awake' will do it for her again.

16. Springsteen - Eric Church

"Funny how a melody sounds like a memory" sings Eric Church in 'Springsteen'. This is one melody that will certainly remind people of 2012's summer for years to come. The song screams 'summer' with lines like "flip flops and cut-off jeans", "stars in the sky", and "soundtrack to a July Saturday night".

17. Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson

Although 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)' was released in mid-December, the popular song still finds its way to radio stations everywhere and has yet to dip below iTune's Top 50. Kelly Clarkson's positive and motivating lyrics have kept this song a favorite among millions and it won't be losing its popularity this summer.

18. Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye

Gotye's hit spent 8 consecutive weeks as Number 1 on iTunes and has brought in a quarter of a billion views on YouTube. Because the song was released much earlier than the summer months, it won't go down as the song of the summer, but it will certainly be the song of the year and no summer playlist would be complete without it.

19. Titanium - David Guetta & Sia

Usher's 'Scream' may be deemed the summer's best party song this year, but Titanium will be a close second. Once the chorus drops, it's almost impossible to resist jumping up and down, and if this song isn't on your party playlist, you've done something terribly, terribly wrong.

20. Take It To The Head - DJ Khaled

It's difficult to hear DJ Khaled's 'I'm On One' without being reminded of last year's summer, and with a little help from Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj, DJ Khaled may have created another summer favorite with 'Take It To The Head'.

Voted up and interesting. Boy how times change. A great list of summer listening songs but I still remember that among them were the Beach Boys and Surfin' U.S.A. among others that are now oldies but still great as well. Must roll with the times and passing this on.
