Marvel & DC

Over the years both Marvel and DC comics have provided us with an ever growing population of Superheroes and an ever increasing army of evil villains to test them.

This multi-million dollar industry has grown from the comics of the late 1930s to a global commercial enterprise through the ventures into film and merchandising, also aided by continually developing new characters and story lines.

Many of the charaters have been depicted on film with big Blockbuster movies over the last few years such as Batman, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers:Assemble, SpiderMan 2, Captain America:The Winter Soldier and the soon to be released Avengers: Age of Ultron (The Official Trailer is shown below).

There have also been animated cartoons and live action TV series such as SHIELD which is mentioned further in this publication after the Age of Ultron trailer.

Products & Merchandise....

Along with the books and movies, comics and annuals comes the merchandise such as toys, clothes, backpacks, lunch boxes, hats, costumes etc. all widely available online with Ebay & Amazon, as per the examples shown to the right and at the bottom of the page. This a never ending source of income throughout the industry, other major organisations and an entertainment to all, as displayed by actor Jim Parsons aka Dr Sheldon Lee Cooper on the popular television show The Big Bang Theory as his T-shirts each episode have a superhero logo emblazoned on the front, usually Green Lantern or The Flash

There are Superhero & Villain costumes such as the ones that are shown here and large company brand names that have acquired the rights to produce their own products incorporating the characters of Marvel or DC, such as Lego with the Batman bricks. and even the board game Monopoly has a special Marvel edition.

Disney also has a vast array of Superhero products such as mugs, towels, childrens pyjamas, bedding, underwear, pencil cases, phone cases, etc

Comics & Characters....

Action Comics first revealed Superman to the world in 1938, however he was originally given to Consolidated Book Publishing who refused to publish the 48 page comic book that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster had been trying to get published for the previous six years.

In 1983 Shuster said that Jerry created all the names and that Supermans alter ego Clark Kent was derived from the names of two actors, Clark Gable and Kent Taylor.

The Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939 and since then has primarily appeared in DC Comics.

There are also joint ventures with superheroes such as Avengers from Marvel Comics whose team were made up of Ironman, Antman, Wasp, Thor, Black Panther, Hawkeye and Hulk (Captain America wasn't included until issue #4 when the team discovered him encased in ice. Also a government organisation called S.H.I.E.L.D ( Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division) who deal with espionage and law enforcement involving the paranormal and superhuman threats. Although this acronym for shield is used in the cinema, animated and live action TV series it has however been changed twice over the years and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Strange Tales #135 (Aug 1965).

There was also Justice League from DC Comics (Also known as Justice League of America / JLA) whose team consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Flash. However throughout the years has also included the Green Arrow, Captain Marvel, Black Canary, Atom, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Red Tornado, Firestorm, Zatanna and other Green Lanterns .

I have compiled a list of both Superheroes and the Villains that they fight, the listings are shown from A-Z and in alphabetical order. The list is not a complete encyclopedia of superheroes and villains and is by no means exhaustive, as Marvel alone has over 750 superheroes and over 1000 villians, including collectives, groups and organisations such as Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and Thuderbolts.

Also included within these figures are the various comic characters that have taken on the personas of the heroes & villains over the years such as Iron Fist (Bei Ban-Wen, Danny Rand, Kwai Jun-Fan, Li Park, Orson Randall, Quan Yaozu and Wu Ao-Shi) , Nova (Frankie Raye, Richard Rider), Spiderman (Miguel O'Hara -Earth 6375, Peter Parker) and Carrion (Malcolm McBride, Miles Warren clone, William Allen).

If you are able to identify some others then please feel free to mention them in the comments and I will try to include them.

To this end please include the comic or film that the character was in and a brief description of their super power or abilities.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy, good luck with any additions.
