Television - Doctor Who – The Fifth Doctor and his companions

Over the years Doctor Who has become one of the most successful British Television shows in history. Due to the show ongoing for over fifty years many actors have portrayed the Doctor and in this article I am going to explore the character of the Fifth doctor.

Peter Davison was the fifth actor to portray the doctor and did so between 1981 and 1984. He acted as the doctor for three series and acted in 72 episodes.

Peter Davison was born in 1961 and is still a big Doctor Who fan today. He is known for acting in several other television shows including Distant Shores (2005 - 2008) and Law & Order: UK (2011).

The Fifth Doctor

The fifth doctor is very compassionate and displays a sense of innocence not previously seen before. He enjoys cricket, and is always seen wearing a cricketing jumper and a stick of celery on his lapel. He was seen as a very ‘human’ doctor and used human logic to his aid many times. He wore glasses, but only when he felt he needed to look cleverer.

The fifth doctor was seen to travel along side six companions.

Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) – 8 Appearances
Continuing his journey from his Time with the previous Doctor, Adric is a humanoid from E-space, and extremely clever with higher intelligence.

Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) – 12 Appearances
Nyssa stays with the doctor through his regeneration, and is a companion whom the Doctor deeply cares about.

Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) – 19 Appearances
A modern day earth girl who loves to travel with the Doctor. She is direct, stubborn, loud and very open. She is one of the longest running companions of the Doctor.

Vistor Turlough (Mark Strickson) – 11 Appearances

A companion of the Doctor, from the planet Trion who initially joined the Tardis crew with the intention of Killing the Doctor (on order from the Black Guardian). In the end he decides not to kill the Doctor as his faith in the Doctor is greater than his faith in Black Guardian.

Kamelion (Gerald Glood) – 3 Appearances
An android robot that has the ability to change its voice and form. The Android has sentient thoughts, but is very weak willed, and is easy to manipulate. The Doctor travelled with Kamelion for a short while before the Master took control of the Android once more.

Peri Brown (Nichola Bryant) – 2 Appearances
Peri, a student from Earth travels with the Doctor after she encounters him and the Master. She travels with the doctor after he regenerates into the sixth doctor and is known for being the most outlandish companion, because she always dresses in revealing outfits.
