Ten Best Paul Simon Songs of All Time

Updated on April 20, 2015
The "Bookends" album (1968).
The "Bookends" album (1968).

I like every Paul Simon Album, from the first songs of Simon and Garfunkel to the recent albums that will have made less of an impact on the public consciousness.

Paul Simon is my favourite singer-songwriter, and my vote for the best songwriter of all time.

Every album is worth listening to again and again, and many of the lesser known songs will be beloved by fans more than the well-known hits.

Where to begin with Paul Simon?

I have cheated, because it was impossible to get anywhere near a level of contentedness without doing ten songs for Simon and Garfunkel and for Paul Simon solo. There are too many great songs, great lines, great melodies; he is the finest poet and philosopher of our time and taken as a whole his catalogue of songs is in my view the greatest collection ever put out.

If you haven’t listened to his songs in depth or if you have only listened to the greatest hits, I sincerely urge you to listen to the full albums! (This may be done very cost effectively at first, as I think every album is uploaded to YouTube.)

So without any further ado, here are the two top tens:

Simon and Garfunkel Top Ten

America

Kathy’s Song

Scarborough Fair/Canticle

The Sound of Silence

The Boxer

Old Friends (leads into Bookends Theme)

Bridge Over Troubled Water

Homeward Bound

Mrs. Robinson

I Am A Rock

Most honourable mentions: The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), The Only Living Boy in New York, A Hazy Shade of Winter, Leaves That Are Green, April Come She Will, Cecilia, Cloudy, and my second favourite love song (after Kathy’s Song), For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her

Paul Simon’s ninth solo album (1997), and perhaps his most underrated (Adios Hermanos and Trailways Bus are from this album). The songs are from his Broadway musical, “The Capeman.”

Hmm... There is one glaring omission from your S&G list for mine :) Top of my list of any period in Paul's song writing career is The Only Living Boy In New York.

Great Hub, regardless! Thank you :)

I thought I was about to be very very jealous - it sounds like you had a good time, yet I understand a disappointment about Simon and Garfunkel, being anywhere near one of those shows would have been an automatic highlight of my life... Saying this, it sounds like you would have seen some other great performers? Thanks for the warm welcome here and on your post.. Cheers

I was in college from '66 to '70....great concerts...even worked backstage at the Fillmore in San Francisco...but I never saw Simon and Garfunkel live...one of my greater disappointments.
