Ten Big "Tiny" Hits
This Folk Trio Had More Than a Little Success
That microscopic virus upending our world today has, in its wake, made nearly everything around us tiny. If you need proof, just look in the morning newspaper.
Actually, you don't even need to look into it, just at its physical presence. It has become so dinky that any wind gust sends it into the driveway a few neighbors away.
Especially tiny now is the the once sticky sports section, having shrunk because of the suspended leagues around the globe. The only thing that might have shrunk more than the sports page is my bank account, like those of too many others whose paychecks have been reduced or cut off completely.
Fortunately, a tiny bank account cannot prevent us from enjoying great songs, some of which feature the adjective tiny in their titles. Here are ten of my favorites.
1. Tiny Dancer by Elton John
Rumors have for years circulated about the song referring to a certain body part, which makes the hit even more intriguing.
2. Tiny Steps by Elvis Costello
"She's almost human beneath those Cuban heels" Costello snarls in the chorus of this track from Taking Liberties, a collection of cuts that had been omitted from the first five albums.
3. Tiny Montgomery by Bob Dylan and the Band
Like most of its album mates, this track offers two and a half minutes of laid-back delight on The Basement Tapes.
4. Tiny by Dinosaur Jr.
J. Mascis, after a near decade respite, returned with this guitar -based gem and others on Give a Glimpse of What You're Not from 2017.
5. Tiny Vessels by Death Cab For Cutie
Transatlantacism is the home of this single by Ben Gibbard and associates, helping to make the album a worthy follow up to Plans.
6. Tiny Bubbles by Don Ho
No one has made the ukulele so popular as Don Ho, the Hawaiin who scored several hits like this one in the Seventies.
7. Tiny Demons by Todd Rundgren
While "Time Heals" became a huge hit and ubiquitous video, its album Healing also offered tunes like "Compassion" and this little treasure.
8. My Sister's Tiny Hands by Andrew Bird
Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of the singer songwriter declares on his 2014 album, which spawned this big hit.
9. Tiny Sparrow by Peter, Paul, and Mary
The folk trio made hits out objects like lemon trees and race horses, so no one is surprised that their beautiful harmonies could do the same for a small avian creature.
10. Tiny Heart by Frank Black and the Catholics
After transforming from Black Francis as front man of the Pixies, Black has been making records like Pistolero under this moniker.
