The 12 best mob (gangster) movies ever, and how to find them!

Updated on May 13, 2015

Once upon a time...

Mob movies in's a tradition!

Whether they used tommy guns, pistols, shot guns or even baseball bats, Americans love the bad guys that whack each other on the big screen. Why is that? Well, I do not believe it's because we are a bunch or criminals and murderer "want to bes" in the U. S. I think it is simply that many mob movies are done very well and with great acting. Also, who could forget some of the famous scenes? That is just how I see it!

Originally named Wise Guys.

Batter up!

Here the ones that came close.

I left out:

Reservoir Dogs- I don't really consider this to be a gangster movie but, I suppose Joe Cabot was a gangster. It was hard to leave this one out!

A Bronx Tale- With Diniro and Chaz Palminteri, and Joe Pesci, this had a great cast and a good story.

Frank Nitti, the Enforcer- Anthony Lapaglia plays Frank, one of Al Capones friends. A deadly tale that does not end well!

The terrible twelve!

13. Little Ceasar- (1931) Edward G. Robinson, see, burst onto the scenes with bullet popping everywhere, of course!

12. Donnie Brasco - Johnny Depp and Al Pacino were great together in this. The way Michael Madsen and Depp handled this, I never would have known that Pacino was about the only Italian in this. It had a great story and a powerful ending.

11. The Untouchables- De Niro hits a home run, in more ways than one! Kostner and Sean Connery play tough cops determined to turn the clock back on Chicago.

10. Once upon a time in America (1984)- Of course, De Niro and Pesci are together again in this one! A former Jewish gangster returns home after many years. What does his past have waiting for him? James Woods also starred in this.

9. The Public Enemy- The unforgettable James Cagney and Jean Harlow light up the screen as Tom Powers and Gwen Allen in this great drama set in Chicago's crime underground. Cagney plays a young street hood that rises through he ranks to become a force surrounded by complete ciaos.

8. Miller's Crossing - (1990) By trying to stop a war between two powerful mobs, an advisor, tome Reagan gets caught in the middle. John Tuturro, Gabriel Burn, and Albert Finney star.

7. White Heat - (1949)- Cagney returns to the big screen as a deranged lunatic who talks to his deceased "ma". He was completely out of control and that's what made this as good as it was!

The top six shooters!

6. The Road to Perdition (2002) - Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, Jude Law, and Jennifer Jason Leigh star in this thrilling heart pounder about the Irish mob. It had a great cast and tied in Al Capone's operation.

5. On the Waterfront- (1954) Voted gangster movie of the year, this was one of Brando's best. Karl Malden was excellent also. A boxer turned longshoreman, finds himself in a bad position. Corrupt union bosses (gangsters) are looking for complete control. Malden and Brando are the only two that can stop them. Here is the problem, the union mobsters know this!

4. Goodfellas (1990) - The true story of Henry hill reunites Pesci and De Niro and tells the story of unspeakable crimes and betrayal. It does not take long for Henry's family to see that something is wrong in their son's life. Soon, everything spins out of control because of Henry's new friends and business associates. This is considered one of the best mob movies ever.

3. Scarface (1983) - Al Pacino and Michele Phiefer star in pivotal roles for them both. The action and intensity were amazing in this. Of course the ending unprecedented.

2. The God Father 2 (1974)- The Corleones return with most of the major cast members. Trouble ensues as Michael tries to expand the family business into Los Vegas, Hollywood, and Cuba. The story also goes back in time to follow Don Vito's upbringing in Sicily in the early 1900s.

1. The God Father (1972) - The well known story the famous crime family that we all know and love! Brando leads this great cast as Vito and heads the family as they go into war over territory and operation.

The real good fella!
