“The Adventures Of Little Diego - Former Child Star” Chapter 7 - Part 2 of 4, ‘My Very First Romance - Or Lack There Of'
So I’ve graduated elementary school and I’m now entering high school. Great! A fresh start! A whole new environment and set of new people to make friends with! Most importantly, a whole new set of females to peek my interest! Here’s my chance to do things differently! A change is gonna come!
R. Kelly - A Change Is Gonna Come
When I first made the transition from elementary school into high school the first new girl to get my attention was Selma! She was a blond, blue eyed, high school homecoming queen who had moved to Beverly Hills from Arkansas. She had the most adorable, thick hillbilly accent. She was the most innocent girl I’d ever met. I think it was her first time in a big city having been raised on a farm. She was a self proclaimed virgin and very proud of that fact! I think we were around 14. She was determined to hold onto her virginity until marriage no matter what. I have no idea if that turned out to be the case, but I never got anything more from her than a peck on the lips. Nothing more romantic ever became of our relationship though I was quite infatuated with her for a time. She had a passion for horses. We did become very good friends all through high school though.

Then there was Lisa. This is a different Lisa than the Lisa mentioned in Chapter 6. This Lisa was a sistah! Black and very beautiful! Lisa grew up way, way up above the tracks in a section of Beverly Hills called Trousdale Estates. Her father was a doctor. You couldn’t get much higher up than Trousdale Estates if you lived in Beverly Hills!

Did I have a big time crush on Lisa! And she had a behind that was just boomin’! Uhm...have I mentioned that I like behinds?
Dats What I'm Talkin' 'Bout!
I’d been wanting to get with Lisa for some time but she always had a boyfriend. Anyway, when her and her boyfriend eventually broke up, she invited me over one evening to where she was babysitting for some friends of her parents. So I’m over there, we’re sitting on the couch watching this movie all comfy and cozy. The lights are down real low and the child she’s watching is in their bedroom fast asleep. There's some Luther playing in the background.
Luther Vandross - A House Is Not A Home
Just kidding. There was no Luther playing in the background, but the mood was set! If there was ever a perfect opportunity to do the old yawn, reach around and put your arm around the girl move, this was it!
But nothing. Nada. Not one move did I make on her. By all indications it was a go, but I found myself immobilized. I had tried to ask her out several times afterwards, but no luck. Girls like that, you typically get one shot and one shot only. I had a thing for Lisa big time!
My first french kiss was right before the senior prom. I was 17 and her name was Amy. She had a twin sister. Amy was a delightful, sweet gal. We were at our mutual friend Steve’s house and I walked her to her car at the end of the evening. We got to her car and I made my move. The senior prom was just around the corner and I thought it would be nice to attend with somebody I had some romantic interest in. Perhaps it’s different now, but back then your high school prom was supposed to be a romantic, magical kind of evening. I wanted to take someone I could at least make out with.

So we’re kissing, and it was quite nice! That was my very first french kiss. The next day when I saw her at school I asked her to go to the prom with me. After what happened the night before, I thought this would be a done deal! I would be in like Flint!
James Coburn - In Like Flint
I wasn’t exactly rejected, but she did tell me she was seeing someone. At least it wasn't Salem (reference to previous chapter). This time it was Benji a former schoolmate who had graduated the previous year. He was one of the studs of our Beverly Hills High School theater department. Reading between the lines, I took what she said as meaning, don't expect anything more will happen between us. Benji was one of those sensitive, artistic, nature lover types. You know, granola eater and all that. Don't get me wrong, Benji was a great guy! I think he also wrote poems and maybe played a little guitar too though I’m not certain. In any case, women just couldn’t seem to get enough of him. Benji is the 5th one in from the left in the photo below. He's the sensitive looking one.
Hmmm. So what the heck was Amy doing with her tongue down my throat the night before if she's seeing Benji? Anyway, I politely withdrew my invitation and we remained friends. I’m glad she let me know. I suppose that’s what you're supposed to do in high school. See different people and perhaps sometimes at the same time.
Actor Greg Morris Of The TV Show "Mission Impossible"
So I ended up going to my high school prom with Linda Morris, daughter of actor Greg Morris one of the stars of the TV series “Mission Impossible”.
It was a complete disaster. The only reason we went together is because we shared some close mutual friends and thought it would be cute if we all went together. Even though Linda and I were friends, there was never any romantic chemistry between us. We both drank far more than we should have that evening and she was actually seeing someone else at the time as well. It was a horrible evening on many levels. Not so much to do with her, but my father had gotten a friend of his who owned a limo company to provide transportation. The biggest glitch to the evening was when the limo driver never returned after he dropped us off for dinner. It was prom weekend so my guess is the driver abandoned ship for some paying clients. We eventually got hold of one of the parents of the other couple we went with and they came down and picked us all up. They dropped us all off at the prom, then picked us all up again later to return us to our individual homes. It was rather embarrassing. I also learned later that somebody had leaked our prom photo to Jet magazine who printed it under the guise that she and I had gone off and gotten married. The caption read something like, ‘Daughter of Greg Morris, star of “Mission Impossible”, has wedded Marc Copage, Corey, from the “Julia” TV show’, with an insert picture of our prom photo. LOL! Only in Hollywood!

There were many I was infatuated with throughout elementary and high school, and I made some lifelong friends...

but the same pattern just kept repeating and repeating itself time and time again. I just knew that after I graduated and got out of high school things would be different! A fresh start! A new beginning with new opportunities! Another chance at finding love!
