The Amazing 8 Science Fiction Movies
Best Science Fiction Movies are Not Stars Wars and Star Trek
There are the cult classic science fiction movies like Star Wars and Star Trek and then there are the more intelligent thought provoking Science Fiction Movies. Don't get me wrong, Star Wars and Star Trek are great hot dog movies; a processed, preserved combination of explosions, shooting, strange creatures, and politically correct philosophy that appeals to the collective entertainment consciousness of the world. I confess, I enjoy these movies too.
But I don't consider them to be amazing or even the best out there. The following is a list of what I consider to be the most amazing 8 science fiction movies currently on the market today.
1. Divergent (2014)
The best science fiction stories don't just present a futuristic or space age story, they communicate a social message with application for the world today. Divergent is one of those movies. It presents a world that has compartmentalized society into five factions of people: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Everyone in this society is taught to live and operate in only one of these five categories. Pride creeps in and each faction believes they are the best. But there are some who are divergent. They operate in all 5 categories, they don't compartmentalize themselves to one category. At first they are perceived as a threat to the entire society, but later they are discovered to be the savior of the society. This film stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James. It is one of the best science fiction movies I have seen and one I would gladly watch multiple times.
2. Ender's Game (2013)
Ender's Game is based off a powerfully popular book by Orson Scott Card. Ender Wiggin is bred and groomed from birth by his futuristic society to be the top space commander to lead an army to destroy an Alien force. This movie is a complete story in itself despite being the first in a long series of books and I hope, a long series of movies. It is a powerful story that raises questions about bullying, use of force, and that asks questions about the blurred lines between virtual reality and reality. It addresses questions about what happens to a person's decision making when they think they are playing a video game only to discover later that they were in a real life battle and the decisions they made had real life consequences. I highly recommend reading the book before watching the movie. The producers did a great job of portraying the laser tag like war games in a room without gravity. I only wish they showed more of it. This movie stars Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield.

3. Serenity (2005)
Serenity tells the story of a tormented girl in a futuristic society who has special gifts and has the ability to bring down the status quo. Serenity is the ship and crew of people that fight to protect her and fight to uncover the secrets that the controlling government seeks to keep hidden. This movie is about the tragedy and horror that comes to humanity when they try to play God and establish a perfect society by attempting to create superior human beings through experimentation. This film is an indictment of philosophies that lead to eugenics and the search for the superhuman. It is also a film promoting the ideology of human freedom and independence. This film stars Summer Glau, Nathan Fillion, and Gina Torres.

4. In Time (2011)
In Time is a movie starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. This story presents an imaginary futuristic world in which time is the currency and when you run out of time, you die. This action filled film looks at what happens when a wealthy man, disillusioned with the thousands of years he has to live gives his time away to a young man from the slums of this world and dies. This young man, Will Salas, must set out on a journey to decide to use all the time he has while avoiding the 'Time' police, paid to keep time in the hands of the wealthy and make sure the status quo is maintained.
This movie is a thrilling story as it plays out. More importantly, it raises questions about the gaps between the wealthy and the poor; the have's and the have not's. One could even wonder if we don't already live in a world where time is the currency since so much of the world is dying of starvation for lack of money and food. This movie not only entertains, it challenges you to think about life and the world we live in.

Inception (Best Dream World Science Fiction Movie)
5. Inception (2010)
Inception is one of those confusing science fiction movies that blows your mind. Its premised on the idea of being able to subconsciously get into someone's mind while they are dreaming and plant an idea in their dream that changes their decision making choices in the real world. This is an elaborately crafted story with no real moral point to it except that its rather fun to think about. Starring Leonardo de Caprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Ellen Page, this is a great mind twister.

6. Source Code (2011)
Source Code is an elaborate story where a soldier wakes up inside the body of an unknown man to find that he is part of a mission to uncover a bomb plot before it happens. He does this by being somehow inserted through coding into a window of time in the past directly prior to the train explosion so he can identify who has the bomb and stop it. The story is complex and presented in a way that it sounds plausible in the science fiction world. This is an intense movie mixed with romance. It's a great movie to relax to on a lazy afternoon or a movie night with friends. This movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan.
7. Minority Report
Minority Report starring Tom Cruise tells the story of a police officer in a futuristic society charged with arresting people for murderous crimes they haven't committed yet. A special machine predicts what people are going to do before they do it and Tom Cruise as Chief John Anderton leads the charge. But when the machine predicts that he will murder, John Anderton (Tom Cruise) sets out on a mission to prove his innocence and show that the machine cannot be relied on to predict murders. The message of the movie is that we cannot take away man's free choice to choose right or wrong and we cannot imprison people for crimes they might commit. This is an action packed, intense thriller.

8. The Matrix Trilogy; The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions (1999, 2003, 2003)
The Matrix Trilogy has become a cult classic because of its intense philosophical overtones and intense action sequences. These movies center around a science fiction world where reality is not real and what is real is always changing. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss, this 3-movie series (The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions) features a savior-like character 'the one' who is on a quest to free humanity from the illusions used to control them. These films are full of intense martial arts sequences and twists and turns in the plot that keep you on the edge of your seat.
