The Amazing Race 22 -- The Amazing Sandcastle Challenge

Updated on February 25, 2013

Original Airing: February 17, 2013

It’s time for a new season of The Amazing Race. This installment of it looks to have some interesting contestants. No former contestants from Survivor or Big Brother. Thankfully, the Hantz Brothers didn’t make the grade. This seasons contestants are:

Chuck and Wynona, who I believe are from Alabama. They seemed a little bit redneck, but not to the level of the Honey Boo Boo Clan.

Anthony and Bates, who are brothers.

Mona and Beth, who are roller derby queens.

Max and Katie, who are newlyweds. The Amazing Race is their honeymoon. Let’s hope they’re not filing for divorce when this race is over.

Cave and Connor, who are father and son. They even both battled cancer at the same time.

Jessica and John are dating.

Idres and Jamil are twins who are also gynecologists.

Pam and Winnie are best friends.

Joey and Meghan are You Tube sensations.

Matt and Daniel are firefighters.

And Caroline and Jennifer are country singers.

The first leg begins in Los Angeles at the Griffith’s Observatory. Phil announces the winner of this leg will get an Express Pass and will also get another Express Pass they can rewards to one of their fellow teams. With that in mind, most of the teams try to get buddy-buddy. The first five teams that get on the first flight to Bora Bora even form an alliance together.

Once teams arrive in Bora Bora they have to take a helicopter ride and jump out of it at 10,000 feet. At which point they’ll get their next clue, which is to go to Eden Beach by water taxi.

At Eden Beach they’re faced with a very trying Roadblock. The beach is covered with hundreds of sandcastles. Their next clue is buried in one of them. For each castle they destroy that doesn’t contain the clue, they have to rebuild that sandcastle. Most of the teams find this a very frustrating task to complete.

Once they finish that task, they’re instructed to go down the beach and attach some kind of flotation device rigging to a canoe and paddle across the water to Motu Café where the first Pit Stop is. Idres and Jamil have problems when their rigging comes off and their canoe overturns on the way to the pit stop, but they make it anyway.

The teams checked in as follows:

  1. Jessica and John who got both Express Passes
  2. Bates and Anthony
  3. Connor and Rave
  4. Pam and Winnie
  5. Mona and Beth
  6. Joey and Meghan
  7. Chuck and Wynona
  8. Idres and Jamil
  9. Max and Katie
  10. Caroline and Jennifer

The firefighters, Matt and Daniel were eliminated.

I’m not sure if I have any early favorites yet to win the race. I kind of like Chuck and Wynona, but I’m not sure they have what it takes to make it to the end. I’m also curious how going on The Amazing Race for you honeymoon is going to work out for Max and Katie. The race is one of the most stressful things you can put your relationship under. If they survive this with their marriage intact, they should be able to survive anything in the future.
