The Avengers Age of Ultron review

Updated on May 19, 2015

My Summary: Honestly the story is not something that you will remember but I'll give it a try. Everyone is back to stop this new villain Ultron who has two new sidekicks: Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Their plan is to destroy the Avengers because they feel they are a detriment to society or something. So they try to mainly kill them by first getting inside their heads and exploiting their fears. The mission is on to stop the villains while keeping the team alive and together.

The Good: It is good to see all these heroes back again. I honestly walked into the movie hoping it would make me laugh like the first one did. It managed to do just that with its witty dialogue and catch phrases. The hulk still kicks ass and the two new actors (who were both in Godzilla together) played their part convincingly. Their acting accents didn't annoy me and I felt their scenes contributed rather than distract from the plot. There are scenes in which Scarlet Witch makes the characters envision their worst fears which I thought was very insightful. Iron Man's fear is that he destroys the team and is fully responsible for their deaths. They all are purposeful and not just thrown in for show. Ultron was a strong character in the film and may not be better than Loki but still shined nonetheless. The actors all gave strong performances and never seemed to break character or look like they didn't take it seriously. When the film ended I feel like I got what I expected. Yes there is a sequel teaser after the credits so stay tuned afterwards.

Bad: First off nothing you see will be new if you already seen the first. Everything was almost exactly the same with plot, characters, and conflicts. There is also a romance between the hulk and Black Widow which I never saw coming. The romance just seems a little forced and didn't have much time to develop. The plot is either confusing or just completely forgotten at times. There is not as much action in this film as the other but I think that leaves time for character. But even the characters are not all given much substance. I also read that Joss Whedon said this second film would be darker and more painful but he only gave us a glimpse of that through the Avengers premonitions. I thought there was potential in a darker storyline but instead they threw the payoff away for familiarity and laughs. I know the Avengers are not supposed to be dark but if they are going to tease us with it I would expect them to go all the way with it. I mean Joss Whedon can get dark and serious since some of his films have characters that are strong and go through tough challenges.

Verdict: Fun

I will say the film was very fun to watch. If you don't come in with high expectations and just want to see your favorite character again do something fun you will get that. I personally wanted more of the witty humor which I am glad I got thanks to Joss Whedon. I couldn't find very much wrong with the movie. It may not be a contender for a top 10 films of 2015 but it will definitely satisfy action and superhero movie fans.

Yeah they like to play it safe. I hope Joss Whedon can take notes and improve with that over time.

Yeah, I felt the same way about Age of Ultron - it did little new, but it was still an enjoyable film. I like the Marvel films, but I wish they'd take a risk here and there.
