The Baldwin Brothers

Updated on June 15, 2010

When it comes to acting dynasties there have been many over the years such as the Redgrave's and the Barrymore's and in that mix you have the Baldwin brothers Alec, Daniel, William and Stephen all of which have had a rather rollercoaster ride when it comes to their movies, TV performances and personal lives. In fact the Baldwin family extends past the four famous brothers with two sisters Jane and Elizabeth although unlike their siblings have no interest in acting and there is also their cousin Joseph who has also ventured into acting.

Alec Baldwin (1958)

The oldest of the Baldwin brothers, although his sister Elizabeth is the oldest of the Baldwin clan, burst onto our screens at the start of the 80s with various TV appearances including a recurring role as Joshua Rush in soap opera "Knots Landing". But it wasn't long before he broke into movies most notably in 1988 when he appeared as the recently deceased Adam Maitland in Tim Burton's "Beetle Juice". From there his career as a movie star steadily grew with further major roles in movies such as "The Hunt for Red October" and "Glengarry Glen Ross" where he delivered one of his finest but short performances as aggressive salesman Blake.

But whilst Alec Baldwin has had some notable performances in a wide range of movies he has also starred in some less than great movies with "The Shadow", "The Juror" and the often derided "Pearl Harbor" being some of the more notable disappointments. More recently Alec Baldwin has made a name for himself as Jack Donaghy on the popular "30 Rock" which contributed to him being a co-host alongside Steve Martin at The 82nd Annual Academy Awards. But whilst having a successful TV career Alec hasn't turned his back on his movie career and 2009 saw him star alongside Meryl Streep in Nancy Meyer's comedy "It's Complicated".

Away from his acting career Alec Baldwin was once married to Kim Bassinger and together have a daughter Ireland Eliesse who was born in 1995.

Daniel Baldwin (1960)

The next of the Baldwin brothers is Daniel probably the least known of the Baldwin's although by no means a slouch when it comes to acting. Daniel has appeared in a long list of movies although unlike his brothers not many are what you would call big budget, although he has appeared in some well known movies such as "Born on the Fourth of July", "Mulholland Falls" and "Vampires". Often noted as the TV Baldwin, Daniel is frankly more recognizable for his roles on shows such as "Homicide: Life on the Street" and more recently in "Cold Case".

Aside from his acting career Daniel Baldwin is also recognisable for various stints in reality shows including "VH1's Celebrity Fit Club", "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" and "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here!"

Away from movies and TV Daniel has had a rather turbulent time with various relationships and marriages as well as being in trouble with law on more than one occasion for a range of offences including in 1998 possession of cocaine which the following year he admitted to having been battling cocaine addiction since 1989.

William Baldwin (1963)

Following Daniel Baldwin in the Baldwin acting clan is William Baldwin and behind Alec is the most successful of the brothers when it comes to his acting career. Before William also known as Billy Baldwin entered acting he turned his hand to modelling working as a Calvin Klein model but like his brothers ended up in showbiz. His first role was in a TV movie "The Preppie Murder" but it wasn't long before he was getting more mainstream roles with credits in such movies as "Flatliners", "Backdraft" and of course the erotic thriller "Sliver" where he starred alongside Sharon Stone.

But whilst William Baldwin's career started well he also has ended up appearing in some less than stunning movies such as "Double Bang", "Art Heist" and the less said the better "Fair Game" from 1995 which also starred Cindy Crawford. Like his brothers William has also appeared in various TV shows such as "Waterfront" and more notably as Patrick Darling IV in "Dirty Sexy Money".

Aside from his acting career William Baldwin has been married to Chynna Phillips, daughter of "The Mamas and Papas" singer Michelle Phillips, since 1995 and together they have 3 children.

Stephen Baldwin (1966)

After William Baldwin came their sister Jane but a year later the last of the Baldwin brothers Stephen was born. Like his brother William, Stephen also worked as a Calvin Klein model before following his brothers into a career as an actor. Although appearing on both TV and big screen since 1986, including the popular and risky "Threesome" in 1994, it wasn't until 1995 that Stephen really made his big break in the classic "The Usual Suspects". But then a year later he starred in the lack lustre "Bio-Dome" as Doyle Johnson and although appeared in numerous other well known movies such as "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas" his movie career has never really matched the promise shown in "The Usual Suspects".

Like his brother Daniel he has also appeared on TV in a few reality shows including "I'm a Celebrity…Get Me out of Here!", "Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice" and in 2010 appeared in the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother where he was the 4th resident to be evicted.

Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks Stephen became a born-again Christian founding the "Breakthrough Ministry" alongside Bobby Brewer and Mario D'Ortenzio. He has also joined forces with radio host Kevin McCullough to put together the Saturday radio show called, "Baldwin/McCullough Radio".

As for Stephen's life away from being a celebrity he also has had his own battles with drugs which he mentions in his book "The Unusual Suspect" which was released in 2006 and also mentions his turn to religion. Plus he has been married since 1990 to Kennya who he has 2 children with.

I'm very pleased to see another actor who has turned his life around and given his life to the Lord. If people want to call him a Jesus freak than so be it. However he turned his life around and that's what matters. I personaly am please to know he's a Christian, we need more people praying and speading the gospal to help other who are lost in this crazy word!

While all this is very interesting, what i would really like to know is how 4 brothers from the same family ended up as actors when it appears their parents were not in the entertainment business. Anyone know the answer to that?
