The Best Christopher Nolan's Movies

Updated on July 25, 2012

About Christopher Nolan

Christopher Johnathan James Nolan was born on 30th July 1970 in London, England. He is a film director, screenwriter and a movie producer. Nolan's father was an English advertising copywriter, and his mother was an American flight attendant. Due to his mother's and father's different origins he spent his childhood between London and Chicago. Nolan graduated at the University College London (UCL) in 1993, specialized in film-making facilities.

In 1997 he married Emma Thomas, his UCL girlfriend who is also a movie director, and they have four children. Nolan's brother, Johnathan, is a movie producer and they often work together.

After directing a few short movies, he directed the movie "Memento" based on his brother's short story, which was his big break. This movie was well received by the critics, and after this movie he continues to enjoy success.

Christopher Nolan is one of the most successful directors in the 21st century. Influenced by Ridley Scot, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock and other brilliant directors, he directed some incredible movies like: Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. His third part of the Batman saga "The Dark Knight Rises" is now in theaters and it's likely to achieve many records on the box offices.

Memento

Remember Sammy Jankis

Nolan's big break. Memento is a psychological thriller. This movie is based on a short story by Nolan's brother Jonathan. Memento received very positive reviews, and has been nominated for four Academy Awards, but it didn't win any.

This movie goes backwards. Scene that is happening will be explained in the next scene. The movie begins with Leonard Shelby (played by Guy Pearce) who lives in a motel. Leonard has anterograde amnesia, which means that he can't store any new memories. The last thing he remembers is the murder of his wife. Although he cant' store new memories, he developed a pattern which will help him to find his wife's murderer. Leonard tattooed his body with important facts that will help him to continue his search, he takes pictures of people that he meets. Detection of this case became his life. However with a help of Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Teddy (Joe Pantoliano) he will be implemented in a very complicated story of lies and deception.

Absolutely brilliant movie. If you haven't seen this one yet, you have to. Although it's a thriller, it's very funny, has good dialogs and even a bit sad.

The Prestige

Christopher Nolan realized that he is good in making thriller movies and he continued to do just that. Again, with the help of his brother Jonathan, he directed The Prestige in 2006, which is based on a novel of the same name by Christopher Priest. He puts together an awesome movie crew: Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Cane, Scarlett Johansson, David Bowie etc.

This movie is about two friends, magicians, whose paths separate, after the death of an assistant during a magic trick. This woman was married to one of these two guys, and he blames another for this tragical event and they become enemies. Both of their goal is to become the best magician that world have ever seen, with a little help of the famous Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla.

Their friendship grew into hatred, and their rivalry became a fight of life and death. This movie shows us how hatred can overcome one, and how far is that one ready to go to satisfy the hatred.

Inception

This is a fantastic movie. Inception came out in 2010, and it has it all. This one is a science fiction, action, mystery thriller movie staring: Leonardo DiCaprio (brilliant performance), Tom Hardy, Michael Cane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard etc. Very well received by critics and on the box offices.

The story begins with Dominic Cobb and his partner Arthur who are able to enter someones dream and steal very important information, using a military machine. During a mission that went wrong, these two are hired by the same guy that they fail to rob. At the beginning, they refuse to do it, but Dominic gets an offer that he can't refuse, a chance to return to America to his children after being charged for the murder of his wife.

Their mission is simple, to plant an idea in a persons mind to destroys his father's empire. But planting an idea is impossible... or is it? The only guy who knows how to do it is Dominic.

Special effects in this movie are unbelievable. The plot is amazing, this movie will hold you from the very beginning to the end. Nolan has definitely surpassed himself with this one.

Batman Begins

In 2005, Nolan directed the movie Batman begins, which was the first of the three Batman movies that Nolan planned to direct. Again he assembled a hell of a crew: Christian Bale, Michael Cane, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman etc.

As the title says this movie is about Batman's beginnings. The story begins with Bruce Wayne a boy who developed a phobia after he falls into abandoned well. Soon after that he witnessed his parent's murder. When Bruce grow up the murderer of his parents agreed to testify against the crime boss Facone, but Falcone kills him before he testified. Bruce leaves Gotham in order to learn how to fight crime so he could get his vengeance. He starts to train as a ninja of the League of the Shadows, under the leadership of Ra's al Ghul.

After his training he came back to Gotham and became Batman. He took the identity of an animal that he feared the most. However during his fight against the Gotham crime organization, he realized that there was something bigger than the local crime boss', and he is the only one who can stop it.

With this film Nolan introduces us very well with the story of Batman and prepares us for his master piece "The Dark Knight"!

The Dark Knight

What ever I say about this movie it won't be enough. This is a master piece by Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight came out in 2008, and was praised by the critics. This movie founds its place in almost every best movie lists of all time.

Heath Ledger as The Joker. In my opinion best movie performance ever. Ledger won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, but due to his tragic death his family accepted it on his behalf.

The story begins with The Joker robing the bank. He stole the money from all of Gotham's biggest crime lords. Later he manages to convinces them that the Batman is their biggest problem and that he will take care of him if they are willing to give him the half of their wealth.

Batman has finally found his match.

This movie will astonish you. This is the best movie in this decade, no question about it. Nolan simply can't make it wrong.

His third part of Batman saga is released in July 2012. I haven't seen this one yet, but I'm really looking forward watching it.
