The Best Marigold Hotel review

Updated on May 29, 2013

Movie Review

‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ is a 2012 British movie about British men and women who retire to a hotel in India. The exotic marigold hotel is considered as one of the best in India, because customers are very satisfied with the service. As of late, it has become rundown and some customers have left because the original owner died. The new owner Sonny Kapoor, played by Dev Patel, is eager to bring it back up again. However his mother thinks he will fail because he is not successful like his brothers. He is determined to prove her wrong and marry the girl that he loves Sunaina, played by Tena Desai, who the mother does not approve of. The retirees played by Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Celia Imurie, Ronald Pickup, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, all meet and become acquainted with each other. Judi Dench’s character Evelyn just lost her husband and has no idea what to with herself. The first scene with her is when she is trying to upgrade her phone service but can’t because her name is not on the account. She tries to tell them that he died but she still cannot do it.

Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton play a married couple named Douglas and Jean who are always nitpicking at little things, especially Jean because her husband lost all of their savings in their daughter’s internet business. So she is just negative with everything that he suggests. Maggie Smith plays Muriel who used to be a housekeeper but is retired also because her employers let her go because of age. She has no family of her own and relied on her employers. She is kind of racist and goes to India for a hip replacement instead of waiting for six months for surgery. Tom Wilkinson plays Graham a Judge who should be retiring but people do not know when. He has lived in India before, when his opportunity to finally came to retire he decides to go to India to finally see the country where he was in love with a man and find him. Celia Imurie and Ronald Pickup play Norman and Madge who are both single people looking for fun and adventure together. Madge has been divorced several times and just wants fun. Norman is an old lothario who sleeps with younger women that does not want to grow up.

This movie was really sweet and funny at times. Judi Dench’s character and storyline was very emotional because she felt she was useless when her husband died. When she goes to India, she applies and gets her first job as HR to a phone company. My favorite was Bill Nighy, he was the positive energy to his wife. Penelope Wilton’s character made me mad, because she hated everything and everybody in India. Her pessimism was just toxic around everyone. Bill Nighy found comfort in Judi Dench by her nice attitude toward everything. Tom Wilkinson and Dev Patel’ storyline was sweet too, because Dev knew the hotel can and will be great with hope and faith. Tom Wilkinson was determined to find the love of his life even if it took forever and even if it killed him. I do not like giving away things in movies that people have not watched the movie yet, but I can tell you it has a happy ending.

Yeah in the end, Maggie Smith was not racist in the end. I liked the fact that she found similarities with the Indian woman. Thank you for the comment.

Hi. You're right that the Marigold Hotel was a good movie! I too liked Nighy's character. But I also thought Maggie Smith's racism was in the beginning and not in the end. She later saw similarities between her with the young hotel maid and stepped up to help Sonny. And thanks for the follow!
