The Best Romantic Comedies Ever Made
Being a big film geek, I decided to write an article about films and more specifically about movies that are romantic comedies, also called "rom-coms". When it comes to the romance genre, I prefer watching soft, sweet and heart-warming movies rather than ones full with drama. Real life has a lot of drama as it is, won't you think? The recommendations below are based on my experience and films I have personally watched. If you're searching for some of the best heart-warming romantic comedies, you should definitely take a look at this list.
Just Like Heaven
This movie combines romance, comedy and fantasy. Reese Witherspoon portrays Elizabeth Masterson, a young emergency medicine physician, who gets involved in a serious car accident. Three months after the accident, David Abbott (played by Mark Ruffalo), an architect traumatized from the sudden death of his wife, moves into the apartment that had been Elizabeth's. When Elizabeth's spirit begins to appear to David, they begin to bond and eventually fall in love.
Lizzie, when we first met, I kept saying you were dead. But it was me that was dead, and you brought me back. You saved me. And now it's my turn to save you.— David Abbott, Just Like Heaven
One of my favorite romantic comedies, Leap Year, follows Anna Brady (played by the incredible Amy Adams), a real estate worker who decides to head to Ireland in order to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on leap day. Her plans however, are about to get interrupted by a series of events and get further complicated when she hires an Irish innkeeper (played by Matthew Goode) to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin. It's a sweet and funny movie that will certainly make you feel good while also giving you a look of Ireland.
When my 60 seconds came around i realized i had everything i ever wanted... but nothing i really needed. and i think what i need is here. and i came all this way to see if you maybe think so too. If you do, well... i don't really have plans past that, which is new for me.— Anna Brady, Leap Year
Alicia Silverstone portrays Cher, a rich, high school student who lives in a Beverly Hills mansion and her only concern in life is being attractive and popular. Cher has an ex-stepbrother named Josh, (played by Paul Rudd) who is the complete opposite of her- socially conscious and idealist. When she decides to boost a new pupil's popularity, she learns some lessons about life and finds love along the way. Clueless is funny, uplifting and is considered one of the best movies of all time.
Searching for a boy in high school is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie.— Cher Horowitz, Clueless
Do You Often Watch Rom-Coms?
Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds make an incredible duo in this hilarious, romantic comedy. The plot centers on a Canadian executive, played by Bullock, who learns that her visa has expired and she may face deportation from the U.S. In order to retain her position as chief editor and avoid being deported back to Canada, she forces her young assistant to to temporarily act as her fiancé. As they head to Alaska to meet his family, both start to realize that they may actually be attracted to one another after all.
That's no problem. I can do that. I can pretend to be the doting fiancé. That's easy. But for you, that's going to require that you stop snacking on children while they dream.— Andrew Paxton, The Proposal
This movie is an excellent combination of romance and fantasy, with a charming cast and an appealing message. The movie's protagonist,Penelope (played by Cristina Ricci), is an aristocratic heiress born under a curse : she has the nose of a pig, which of course significantly ruins her appearance. The curse can only be broken by true love. After shutting her away for years, Penelope's parents decide to introduce her to possible suitors, an event that sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change Penelope's life.
But this isn't me, the real me is inside here somewhere just waiting to get out and you can make that happen and once the curse is broken I'll be just like anybody else.— Penelope Wilhern, Penelope
An alternative version of the tale "Beauty and the Beast", this film, loosely based on Alex Flinn's novel of the same name, is one of the best of its genre. In this modern tale, a superficial teen from New York,Kyle Kingson (portrayed by Alex Pettyfer), has it all - looks, intelligence, wealth and opportunity -but also a superficial, vain and cruel personality. Prone to mocking and humiliating his unattractive classmates, he eventually gets punished by getting transformed into everything he despises; an ugly, hideous person. In order for the curse to be broken, he'll need to find true love. This sweet movie teaches you to learn how to see past surfaces to discover true inner beauty.
I just was scared that you didn't love me. And I didn't think you could because of how ugly I am. I should've known better. That's not who you are. You took one look at me and still said you'd seen worse. And somehow, when I'm around you, I don't feel ugly at all.— Kyle Kingson, Beastly
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser is one of the best romantic movies on Netflix. The main thing it teaches viewers is that at the end of the day, looks aren't that important and that we should learn to always look below the surface. Sierra (played by Shannon Purser),is one of the most unpopular girls of her school. She's very smart and kind but doesn't fit the traditional standard of beauty. When the most popular girl of her school plays a prank on her, she sets in motion a chain of events that leads to unexpected friendships and romances.
I mean, you're not exactly everybody's type. But.. you're my type.— Jamey, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser
This heart-warming films is based on the novel "Where Rainbows End" by Irish author Cecelia Ahern and centers on Rosie (played by Lily Collins) and Alex (played by Sam Claflin), who have been best friends since they were five. When the two of them both realize they have romantic feelings for each other, complications arise. Over the course of twelve years, their lives change dramatically but their connection remains. Maybe after all, eternal love truly does exist. Prepare yourself to shed some tears.
It was no ordinary friendship. We were inseparable, constantly being separated. I’ve realized that no matter where you are or who you’re with, I will always truly, completely love you.— Rosie Dunne, Love, Rosie
The Perfect Date
Based on the novel The Stand-In by Steve Bloom, this romantic movie on Netflix, follows Brooks Rattigan (played by Noah Centineo), who dreams of getting into Yale. In order to save money he launches an app with the help of his friend, selling himself as the stand-in boyfriend for all occasions. However, while Brooks is great at becoming who other people want him to be, he hasn't figured out yet who he actually is and what he really wants in life. Along the journey of finding himself, he also unexpectedly discovers love.
You want to know how you can tell if you're meant to be with someone? Just sit and have a conversation. Some people when you talk to them, it's like trying to listen to classical music on a radio with no antenna. You can push that dial back and forth all you want, but you only get the static. But when you're meant to be with someone, and they truly are the one, you just sit, start talking and a Beethoven sonata will begin to play.— Brooks Rattigan, The Perfect Date
She's All That
This uplifting movie follows a high school jock named Zack (played by Freddie Prinze Jr) who makes a bet with his friends that he can turn an unattractive, unpopular girl (portrayed by Rachael Leigh Cook) into the school's prom queen. However, when he gets close to her and they start spending time together, he ends up falling in love with her. This film appealed so much to viewers, that it managed to reach number one at the box office in its first week of release.
Sometimes when you open up to people, you let the bad in with the good.— Zack Siler, She's All That
