The Bold and the Beautiful: Will Liam and Steffy’s Marriage Survive the Loss of their Baby?

Updated on May 20, 2013

Liam and Steffy Married because Steffy was Pregnant

Viewers were never kept in the dark about why Liam and Steffy were together. Liam made is clear, to Hope at least, in the fallout from Brooke’s room service elopement and Steffy’s baby bombshell, that he was going to stand by the mother of his child because it was the right thing to do.

Liam wanted to break the cycle of Spencer men not raising their children in the same way his father was doing with Will.

The Bride rode a Motorbike

Liam and Steffy married in a ceremony that was uniquely Steffy – the bride rode up the driveway on a motorbike, the black lace from her wedding ensemble billowing behind her. Liam loved his bride’s entrance, but on their honeymoon in Aspen jokingly laid down the law that there was to be no more motorbike riding until the precious cargo she was carrying was born.

Steffy breaks her promise to Liam

Steffy agreed. But she broke that promise when faced with bumper to bumper traffic standing between her and a romantic evening at home with Liam. Steffy was tempted by the bike that would weave in and out of traffic with ease. She donned her leathers and helmet and headed home.

She didn’t make it. Steffy was cut off by another driver. She careened into the car and was thrown onto the tarmac unconscious.

Steffy suffers a concussion

According to Dr. Meade the hard fall killed Steffy and Liam’s baby instantly. To add to the trauma, however, Steffy regained consciousness with no memory of her accident. Given that Steffy had suffered a concussion before (Cabo?) Dr Meade noted that memory problems weren’t uncommon. Steffy’s patchy memory did put Liam in an uncomfortable position.

Steffy doesn’t remember being pregnant

While still coming to terms with the loss himself, Liam had to gently quiz Steffy on what she remembered about their weddings (Aspen and Los Angeles) and the events leading up to her accident. With a little prompting Steffy remembered she was pregnant. Steffy realized immediately that she’d lost her baby.

Grieving and healing

Steffy became despondent and withdrawn in her grief. Taylor begged her daughter to forgive herself. She couldn’t blame herself. What happened was an accident. Physically she was ready to go home, Dr Meade told her family, but emotionally she remained withdrawn unitl Liam came to take her home. And then all Steffy could croak out was “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have taken the bike. I’m sorry.”

Liam hugged his wife. What Steffy didn’t know however was that Bill Spencer had pulled Liam’s feelings on what had happened.

Like Steffy, Liam placed a fair chunk on blame for the loss of their child squarely on Steffy’s shoulders. Why did she have to get on that bike when he’d told her not to, Liam wanted to know?

Bill encouraged his son to open up and vent to him. Bill’s reasoning – for once solid – was that Bill could take whatever Liam had to say, but Steffy couldn’t. Bill then pleaded with his son not to hold what happened to their child against Steffy.

Will Liam and Steffy’s Marriage Survive the Loss of their Child?

Liam and Steffy will have a few obstacles to face in the near future if their marriage is to survive this tragedy.

Getting past blame and guilt

The first is the issue of blame. Both Liam and Steffy clearly have strong emotions around Steffy getting on her motorbike while pregnant. Liam could feel like Steffy just blew off his concerns about her and their child’s safety when she got on her motorbike. If Liam can’t forgive Steffy for her tragic lack of judgment then how is Steffy ever going to forgive herself?

Hope told Steffy she wished her nothing but the best before Steffy had her accident. Will Hope see Steffy's tragedy as an opportunity?

Could Hope be a threat?

Secondly, Liam married Steffy because she was pregnant. He assured Steffy that wasn’t the case, yet he told Hope that in a perfect world that they would be together. Which means Liam likely still has unresolved feelings for Hope. This isn’t to detract from his relationship with Steffy. With cracks showing in Liam and Steffy’s marriage could Liam turn to Hope?

If he did, you can bet Hope won’t be sending him back to his wife. Hope has been very vocal on her feelings about Steffy stealing the life that should have been hers. Will this tragedy in Steffy and Liam’s life together give Hope and opening to make a move on Liam?
