The Book of Mormon: Now Playing in NYC

Updated on March 3, 2013

Written by the makers of the critically acclaimed television program known as "South Park" (Matt Stone and Trey Parker), the musical called "The Book of Mormon" is a hilariously funny Broadway musical that parodies the Mormon faith, along with traditional musical theater as well. The play features a pair of young missionaries who go off to Africa in hopes of spreading their faith as much as they can. They are both extremely naive about the world, and hope that simply by exposing and teaching others about their religious beliefs to other cultures and societies they can cure and fix a great deal of the world's problems. What they find, is that not everyone is so enthusiastic about Mormonism like they are. What ensues is a captivating journey into the inner workings of Mormonism and traditional musical theater that is sure to delight audiences from all walks of life.

This fantastically funny musical is playing at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in New York, NY with two shows every day of the year. New York residents and people from surrounding cities and states should definitely see this production while they have a chance; it is truly one of the funniest Broadway musicals to ever be produced. This is not just an offhanded statement either, as the critics have agreed almost unanimously with it. The long list of awards that have been given to The Book of Mormon since its opening is simply staggering.

Since Book of Mormon opened in March of 2011, it has received rave reviews from critics and theater enthusiasts alike. This musical has so far won a Tony Award for Best Musical, a Tony Award for Best Original Score, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and many more awards. This play truly has something fun and enjoyable to offer almost every different type of theater-goer out there. With its outstanding musical scoring, and top-notch professional acting, this play is, perhaps surprisingly given the crude nature of some of the comedy found "South Park", a refined and polished piece of musical theater.

Stone and Parker have said several times publicly, and in interviews, that they never expected Book of Mormon to be the colossal success that it ended up being. Really its no surprise though; these two have been successfully making people laugh for over 10 years with their hit comedy show, South Park. Their comedic genius definitely shines through in this wildly successful piece of Broadway musical theater, and in all honesty this work tends to illuminate some of the more out-there elements of Mormonism in a very lighthearted and fun kind of way.

Whether you're just looking for something fun to do in New York City, or you're a serious theater buff who is curious to see what the creators of South Park have come up with in terms of Broadway musical theater, then do yourself a favor and buy a ticket for Book of Mormon today, now playing at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in New York, NY with two shows playing every day of the year.
