The Descendants DVD Review
The Descendants stars George Clooney in a Golden Globe and BAFTA award winning role as lawyer Matt King. He was also expected to win the Oscar for it but surprisingly lost out. It is possibly a career best performance from him as a man whose life seems to be slowly coming apart. It is not his usual suave type of character that he is playing but a man near the edge. Clooney plays someone who has a seemingly ideal Hawaii home and lifestyle but his wife has had a life threatening accident and is in a coma. He has to look after his two slightly rebellious daughters and try and relate to them. He gets to hear some uncomfortable truths about his wife, and indeed, about himself.
Meanwhile he has some other things to contemplate.
He is the main trustee in charge of a large piece of land passed onto himself and his relatives. There is a limited amount of time where the land can be sold and the family can make a great amount of money but the locals who stay on the land do not want it to be sold causing major upheaval to them.
Throughout the film it involves Clooney and two sets of descendants. His daughters, and how to be a good father to them and the relatives and their wanting to sell the land and all that this means to everyone involved . Will he make the correct decisions?
A very good, involving film where all the actors are on top form especially Clooney and also Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller as his daughters and there are some good comic moments featuring Nick Crause as Sid.
A film that could easily have become over sentimental but comes across as very believable.
