Through the Past Darkly

As far back as the Middle Ages, witches were attempting to exert control over us through their magiks and evil ways. Needless to say, as long as there have been witches, there have also been witch hunters. One of those Witch hunters is Kaulder (Diesel) who — back in the Middle Ages — was hunting down the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht) with the inhabitants of towns devastated by the black plague that she had spread across the countryside. Unfortunately, Kaulder’s allies are all killed and the Witch Queen escapes, but not before she curses Kaulder with eternal life so as to cause him suffer forever the loss of his wife and daughter for all of eternity.

The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

The Present Through the Past

Flash forward some eight hundred years later, where witches and humans have finally struck a measure of détente in order to exist side-by-side in the world; living (essentially) peacefully among each other. Meanwhile the witch hunter, Kauder, is still hunting down rogue witches and imprisoning them in the darkness, as he — the last of his kind — is the one solely responsible for keeping the world in peace. He does this with the support of a religious order that has been charged with assisting him throughout the ages. Currently that task falls to the priest Dolan 36th (Michael Caine). As his name and designation indicates, he is the 36th Dolan to assist Kauder in his quest.

The Plot Unfolds

Well as this Dolan is getting on in years, his time for providing support to Kauder and keeping an account of his life, is coming to a close. Then, on the same day of his retirement, Dolan 36th dies alone in his apartment. In an attempt to determine what happened, Kauder accompanied by Dolan 37th goes up to the apartment in order to investigate Dolan 36th death and discovers the presence of black magic in the apartment. Further investigation reveals that Dolan 36th is still alive but under a very powerful spell that has incapacitated him. In order to save his friend, Kauder visits a witch named Chloe (Leslie), the owner a witch bar, so as to seek her help. Kauder is attempting to recall incidents his own death following clues left behind by Dolan 36th. Unfortunately, the bar is attacked and destroyed by a witch named Beliel (Ólafsson). When Chloe uses her own abilities to assist Kauder, he learns a secret about his immortality.

It's all about Dungeons and Dragons

According to insider information, Diesel had long been a Dungeons and Dragons player, and was apparently he actually taught Dame Judi Dench how to play while they were on the set of The Chronicles of Riddick back in 2004. Kauder, the main character in this film was reportedly partly based upon his Diesel’s D&D character — Melkor — who was also a Witch Hunter. Diesel is said to have used one of the third party D&D books to create the character class because he was such a fan of being a Ranger type but also like to cast a few spells as well. Unfortunately for Diesel, his fan-base was not as impressed by his efforts as was he, and the film, though serviceable, simply didn’t garner the kind of support for which he was hoping.
