The Newsroom series

Updated on May 15, 2014

The Newsroom

This 2012 HBO series has comedy, drama and politics. It takes you behind the scenes of the newsroom ACN, the crew and how the find the stories that are important to them. While during all of this, they deal with their personal lives as well. The first season starts as sort of a comeback for Will McAvoy when he has a rant about America being the greatest country. He is known for being honest but too much honesty can hurt his career. His executive producer is Mackenzie, who is also his ex and does not want to work with her but she doesn’t care because she wants them to have a professional relationship with him. The first season really shows you how they frantically want to run a story without trying to lose their audience, Will struggling with his comeback trying not to get fired, the whole crew dealing with love and love lost, and finding stories that are meaningful for the world to know about. They find facts and reliable sources to run the news. There is one episode where they lost ratings in one week because all they talked about is the oil spill. The owner of the company’s son Reece (Chris Messina) told them to talk about the Casey Anthony and Anthony Weiner stories, but Mackenzie refused because they are not gossip news. Will says they should to get back ratings and to not lose his job. The cast includes Jeff Daniels (Will McAvoy), Emily Mortimer (Mackenzie McHale), John Gallager Jr. (Jim Harper) Alison Pill (Maggie Jordan), Thomas Sadoski (Don Keefer), Olivia Munn (Sloan Sabbith), Dev Patel (Neal Sampat) and Sam Waterson (Charles Skinner). Jane Fonda plays Leona Lansing the CEO of the company AWM and recurs in some episodes of the season. My favorite characters of the show is Will, Jim, Sloan and Neal. Will is honest and no holds barred when anchoring the news but at the same time he struggles with his own demons and still loves Mackenzie. Jim is lovable, sweet producer but sometimes shy because he loves Maggie and can’t tell her due to the fact that she is with Don. Neal is nice and wants to be able to report his own story one day, but he writes the blog for ACN so he can still try. Sloan is one of the smartest with a Ph.D. and speaks fluent Japanese but sometimes can be socially inept. She is the economist of the crew. One of my favorite episodes was episode 4 when a gossip columnist started spreading lies about Will and when Don fixed Jim up with Maggie’s roommate Lisa (Kelen Coleman). You’ll see in this episode that Maggie likes Jim when he actually starts dating Lisa and gets jealous when she found out he slept with Lisa. So there is a love triangle with Maggie, Don and Jim and history almost wants to repeat itself because Mackenzie sees Maggie in her so much. If you don’t watch the show, at least watch one episode you will like how the show goes with what is happening in the world. If you do watch the show, you will agree with me and think it is a great news show. Jeff Daniels won an Emmy for Best Actor in a miniseries or show last year. The third and final season has been confirmed and will be coming soon

      I haven't seen this show, but your synopsis paints it to be a well constructed, engaging, and entertaining show.Thanks!( Isn't that Jeff Daniels from ' Dumb & Dumber? ' lol! Might be a little difficult taking him seriously at first, but I'll try :)

      Have a marvelous evening;

      Yours Sincerely,
