The Not-So-Innocent Side of Disney: Lady and the Tramp: The Case of the Siamese Cats and The Rat
Lady and the Tramp
Lady the Tramp is truly a beautiful film about two dogs falling in love, but the moment the siamese cats came out the bag I was half tempted to switch it off, but that song is just so catchy and creepy both at the same time. Then towards the end of the film Tramp became my hero when he saved the baby from a rat which to this day still creeps me out.
The Siamese Cats
The music from the film is fantastic but the Siamese Cat song comes number one in being creepy. As a child it was those eyes that freaked me out and gave me nightmares. The lyrics in the song show how wicked they really are. They firstly see a fish and intend to kill it.
"Do you see that thing swimming round and round, Maybe we can reaching in and make it drown, If we sneaking up upon him carefully, There will be a head for you and a tail for me"
Then they want to try and steal the babies milk.
"Do you hear what I hear, It's a baby cry, Where we find a baby there's milk near by, And if we look in baby buggy there could be, Plenty of milk for you and maybe some for me"
These cats are pure evil.
Siamese Cats Eyes
Siamese Cat Song
Then came the rat scene with Tramp killing it behind a curtain. This scene went from light to dark pretty quickly which shows something bad is going to happen. Those dark eyes of the rat have forever stayed in my memory and didn't find these an easy watch as a child.
The Evil Rat
On a lighter note, this is truly the best scene in the film.
