The Rocky Horror Picture Show - A True Classic
"Tell us about it, Janet"
I was one of the unlucky kids, who wasn't even alive when the show was in theatre, nor had my parents met when the film came out. However, I was very lucky growing up, my father knew I loved musicals and with him tightly wound around my finger I convinced him to let me watch it; at a very young age may I add. I never truly understood the content in the film at that time, I just loved the music and before I knew it I knew the movie; word for word. To this day, I have lost count of the amount of times I have watched the movie and been to theatre to watch it. I love the movie so much I got "Don't Dream It. Be It" tattooed to my arm!
For those who haven't been "thrilled, chilled and fulfilled", the short premise of this fantastic musical is rather fitting as a cult classic. A young, newly betrothed couple come into some car trouble and go to a mansion in the middle of a very wet English night to seek a telephone. Unfortunately there night doesn't go to plan, they meet fantastic, weird and wonderful people; their experience would truly change them forever.
The Theatre Production
If you haven't been, I must insist you do when it is next on tour and coming to a theatre near you! I assure you, it will be one of THE BEST nights you will ever have!
The show itself is spectacular! I have yet to see a show that hasn't given me a stitch from laughing, amazement from the talent on state, or left the show singing and dancing! The majority of fans will dress up (it is always fun!); not to forget the audience participation.
Yes, you did just read that correctly, there is audience participation. No it's not like the pantomime; it's more exhilarating! Why or how, I hear you ask? You have props, and cues within the songs and dialogues where you something to say or do!
For example:- Frank 'N' Furter (during Sweet Transvestive) "I could show you my favourite obsession..."; Audience "SEX!". If you haven't got any of the boxsets where it gives the promps and lists of props. There is a website dedicated to fans that explains the do's and don't's so you won't get lost!
One of many examples you can find online
The 1975 Movie
It is by far, in my opinion, the best musical movie EVER!. I love it, I can't seem to ever get enough of it! To the point I have it on whilst I am writing this!
All of the characters are memorable, especially Frank 'N' Furter; played by the ever talented Tim Curry! His performance is truly amazing! Not only can the man dance, act and sing but by GOD does he suit the make up, corset and stockings! Bearing in mind he does all of this in a pair of sparkly platforms! I know many women who sadly don't look as good as him in that outfit!
Who could forget Richard O'Brien as Riff Raff, yes he is the bald man who did the Crystal Maze many moons ago! All the main characters have their distinctive mark on the film, from the innocence of Brad Majors, the naivety of Janet Weiss to the muscular Rocky! Rock 'n' Roll, motorcycle riding Eddie (Meat Loaf, yes it really is) and heart full of love Columbia!
"I really love that rock 'n' roll"
For a musical Richard O'Brien wrote out of spite, it truly is a masterpiece! The music is catchy, the lyrics are great and I don't know anyone (even non fans) who don't know at least the Time Warp!
It's full of bouncy guitar riffs, piano sequences, saxophone solos etc you name it; it's got it! The music itself will get even the most robotic person moving to the beat!
The soundtrack is great; as you listen to it you can follow the story of each individual character from the promiscuous events of Dr Frank 'N' Furter, to the first sexual encounter Janet has and the true feelings they have for each other.
"It's just a jump to the left"
You've got it, its the time warp; even children parties have this song played. This song is popular for people of all ages regardless of if they have watched the film or seen the show in theatre.
The simple reason is because the song has a chorus that is explained by the narrator:-
"It's just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right. With your hands on your hips, you bring your knees in tight. But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane, let's do the Time Warp again!"
Even if you were drunk and didn't get the rest of the lyrics in the song, or understand the meaning, the chorus itself will unify a room where a certain feeling rushes, it courses through your veins making you jump out of your seat and join right in!
"Don't Dream It. Be It"
If it comes on tv, or if you come across the DVD; get it! Watch it, love it, and do it all over again! It will be worth it!
If you are in the minority, globally who don't like then I'm really not sure why you're reading this! However, as Dr Frank 'N' Furter sings to us, "Don't dream it, be it"; do what your heart desires!
For now, for me, I am going to enjoy this magical musical, singing along, dancing and I will become a "creature of the night"
