English Translation

Oh... Oh... Oh... Oh...

I saw you in a magazine.

You were wearing a yellow dress

and your hair was green

in a small store in Baclaran.

When I looked, I stared,

marvelling at your beauty.

Do you still remember

when we were still dating?

I would never have guessed you'd make it big.

I even laughed at you.

You even called me names.

You were not that beautiful then.

But now...

Hey!

CHORUS:

You have a different smile.

You have a different gaze.

Everything has changed about you.

Oh... Oh...

If only you weren't discovered,

then I won't have a problem

because I don't have enough money

to buy... Oh...

to buy your beautiful face.

Surely you have your own car now,

and you walk beautifully on stage,

your clothes designed by Sotto.

Perhaps soon you'll compete

as a super model of the whole wide universe

because...

CHORUS:Your smile has changed.

Your gaze has changed.

Everything has changed about you.

Oh... Oh...

If only you weren't discovered,

then I won't have a problem

because I don't have enough money

I saw you in a magazine.

And with my shock, I didn't notice

that the title was lewd.

I swiftly opened its pages

And I was struck

by the plain truth.

Hey!

CHORUS:Your smile is different.

Your gaze is different.

Everything has changed about you.

Oh... Oh...

If only you weren't discovered,

then I won't have a problem

because I don't have enough money.

Hey!

Your smile is different.

Your gaze is different.

Everything has changed about you.

Oh... Oh...

If only you weren't discovered,

then I won't have a problem

because I don't have enough money

to buy...

to buy your beautiful face.

I wonder where you are now.

I hope you are happy.

I hope in the next issue

I see you on centerfold.

About the Song and Its Translation

The text above is my own translation of the Filipino song "Magasin" by the band called Eraserheads. The song was recorded and released in 1994 under the album "Circus". (Its writer is the band member Ely Buendia. It was produced by Robin Rivera.)

Although it was released in 1994, the song is still popular to this day. As a proof of this, cover version of the song were released by Paolo Santos (2005) and rock band ChicoSci (2012) in the Philippines. The song has no music video but you may listen to it in youtube.

English and Filipino are two languages that have different grammatical patterns. In this regard, some of the translated lyrics may contain words that are not exactly seen in the original Filipino verse (as in the case of verses containing Filipino idioms). But the author has used the best of his abilities to ensure that the meanings are just like that of the original lyrics.

More information About the Lyrics

Songs contain feelings and ideas versed in beauty and rhythm. But that is not all that a song has. It also brings with it culture and time.

In the song, Eraserheads mentioned a place called Baclaran and a person named Sotto.

Who is Inno Sotto?

The song included a line that includes a designer named Sotto. It is actually Inno Sotto, who is often called as "Manila's Prince of Fashion." He is a renowned designer in the Philippines. He won the Most Outstanding Designers Competition, founded the Filipino Designers Group, and appointed as Commissioner for Arts and Culture to UNESCO by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, former top executive of the Philippines. A film about him, "Inno Sotto: A Special Fashion Documentary" won in a New York City festival in 2008. In December 2009, he was chosen as one of People Asia's People of the year.

Where is Baclaran?

Baclaran is a neighborhood district located in northern Paranaque City in Metro Manila. A famous church, the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is located in the area.

That is all. Thank you for reading the article. I hope you enjoyed the song!
