Jay Leno Leaves The Tonight Show

Updated on May 31, 2009

Jay Leno

June 1, 2009 is the day that Conan O’Brien makes his first appearance as the host of The Tonight Show. Jay Leno has been the host of the long-running American nighttime talk television show since May 1992. For the last two hosts, spring time seems to be the mark to hand over the baton to another leader.

Millions of viewers tune into The Tonight Show each day. It won’t be surprising if the show’s numbers don’t spike dramatically because millions more are curious to see what O’Brien’s style will be like as the new host. Taking over as host of a television show that has been running for five decades is no easy task. There will be changes and transitional periods for O’Brien. There were for Leno as well.

Jay Leno’s start as host of The Tonight Show came with its own set of challenges. After all, Leno took over for the much beloved Johnny Carson. To many people The Tonight Show started with Johnny Carson although he was not the show’s first host. Prior to Carson Jack Paar and Steve Allen had held the reigns.

NBC knows how to navigate its way through change. I am sure that this time will be no different. For those who are fans of The Tonight Show, will you tune in now that a new host has been named for the show? Will you give Conan O’Brien a chance or will you refuse to accept the change now that Jay Leno has moved on?
