Intro.

Tiwa Savage has carved a niche in the Nigerian music industry. She is easily one of the top 10 female recording artists in the country. Born on 5 February 1980 the hardworking singer, performer entered the Nigerian scene in 2012 through a recording deal with Marvin Record.

Early Days

Tiwatope Savage Balogun was born in 1980 at Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. Her family soon migrated to Great Britain when she was 11.

She discovered her talent early playing the trombone in her high school orchestra. Tiwatope graduated from the University of Kent with a degree in Business Administration and worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The talented singer further enrolled at Berklee College for a professional degree in music and graduated at 27. Tiwa Savage is married to Tunji Balogun Tee Billz her manager.

Career

She started her music career as a backup vocalist at 18 years for many notable musicians. Among her credits are backup vocals for George Michel, Andrea Bocelli, Kelly Clarkson, Emma Bunton and Mary J Blige.

More are Blu Cantrell, Ms Dynamite, Chaka khan. Stage performances include Destiny’s Child, The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Sting, Robbie Williams and 50 Cents.

A major challenge that most backup singers face is transition from backup to lead. Tiwa’s share determination, talent and experiences motivated her to gain mainstream appreciation.

Songwriting

In 2006 she participated in The X Factor UK edition advanced to final 24. She later secured a deal in 2009 with Sony/ATV Publishing. She received songwriting credit for Monica’s 'Catch Me' and wrote for Babyface and Mya.

She wrote 'Oh Yeah' featuring Snoop Dog, Push Push featuring Akon and wrote for Fantasia Barrino. Other credits include background vocals for the legendary Whitney Houston.

Entrance into the Nigerian Music Scene

Under her own record label 323 Entertainment in 2012 Tiwa joined Don Jazzy’s Marvin Records. As a leading artist at solar Plexus she contributed on a compilation album.

Collaborations

Credits and collaborations with top Nigeria acts include Flavour’s N’abania remix, Timi Dakolo, Sakrode and Praiz. Other collaborations are with Waje, General Pype and Pamela Egoh ‘Higer’.

She released her album 'Once Upon a Time' on 3 July 2013 to the Nigerian Market. Her single Kele Kele received numerous nominations and awards.

The highly acclaimed single Dorobucci was released on 1 May 2014. The song featured Marvin Records Stars, Tiwa Savage, Don Jazzy, D’Prince, Reekado Banks, D’ja and Dr SID. Other collaborations include Davido, Diamond Platnumz and Lola Rae. She also performed at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2014.
