To Rome with Love movie review

Updated on May 17, 2013

movie review

I just recently watch this movie when I was browsing my Xfinity on Demand guide. It is another great movie directed and written by Woody Allen, who also has a role. The film is a 2012 romantic comedy that has four separate story lines about different people enjoying their time in Rome, Italy. I do not want to give much away of the movie but I will tell you what I liked about the movie. One of my favorite story line is with Alison Pill’s character Haley where she meets and falls in love with an Italian man named Michealangelo, played by Flavio Parenti. They both meet and plan to get married in Italy, but they have to meet each other’s parents’ first. Woody Allen plays Haley’s father and he is just as neurotic as always. He is a retired opera director scared of planes and does not want to drink the water. Her mother played by Judy Davis is more level headed trying to calm her husband down. My other favorite story is with Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin, Greta Gerwig, and Ellen Page. Alec Baldwin plays a married architect named John who is visiting Rome again after 30 years when he used to live there. He meets Jesse’s character Jack, an architect student, who admires John’s architect work. He shows John his apartment who he lives with his girlfriend, Sally played by Greta Gerwig. She tells Jack that her best friend Monica, played by Ellen Page, but tells him not to fall in love with her. Men tend to be drawn to Monica because of her erotic stories and intelligence. John is his guide in spirit throughout the movie and tells Jack not to fall for her seduction, because it is mask of her boredom of not getting work as an actress. Jack says he will not fall for it because she is not that pretty but he starts getting swayed by her words and her favorite books. Just like most of his movies, some characters break the fourth wall. In the beginning, a crossing guard introduces us to the movie and says that he has watch these characters while doing his job or at home on his balcony. This movie reminded me of Woody’s other movie ‘Play it Again, Sam’. Humphrey Bogart is Woody Allen’s character guide in spirit as well to be more confident in getting women. If anybody is interested in watching it, you will laugh and feel sympathy for the characters.

It's a great film. I wanted to watch it when it came in the theaters but didn't get a chance. You will like it. The whole cast is great.

Oh man, I totally saw the trailer to this a while back, but forgot about it! I still want to see it though. I actually really like Woody Allen movies, even though my husband won't watch them with me.

I like mostly all of the actors who are in this, and Alec Baldwin is hilarious! Ellen Page and Greta Gerwig are so darn cute, and Jesse Eisenberg is growing on me.
