Tom Cotter - Audition and Predictions For America's Got Talent 7

Updated on May 23, 2012

America's Got Talent concluded its New York City auditions for Season 7 on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Tom Cotter is the first standup comic from this season to make it to the Las Vegas audition round.

Based on past history, it would seem that a standup comedian has about as much chance of winning AGT as getting rich panning for gold in 2012. With the exception of Grandma Lee in Season 4, they are routinely eliminated on the public vote when they do get a chance in the live rounds.

It is hard to come up with just the right routine that is going to please a crowd every time in about 90 seconds. One bombed joke can blow your chances. Tom has clearly practiced comedy a lot and is not going to have a lot of bombs because he quickly moves to the next joke instead of waiting for a big laugh from the audience.

But in the end, my prediction is that he will not make the finale. There is some chance at the Top 10, but Cotter's self-deprecating style is only mildly funny compared to the top standup comedians. He is certainly above average, but in a contest for one million bucks, being above average is not even relevant to the equation.

Simply standing there telling jokes is not unique enough to win America's Got Talent. You're going to have to add impressions or something extra to set yourself apart from the crowd. Unless Tom Cotter completely changes up his standup act, my prediction is that he will have short-lived success on the 7th season of America's Got Talent.
