Tony : Theatre | Oscar : Film | Emmy : Television | Grammy : Music

The Tony Awards are to Broadway’s (New York City’s) theatrical productions what the Oscars are to film, what the Emmy Awards are to television, and the Grammy Awards are to the music industry.

The Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre (Tony Awards) are presented annually in more than 25 categories. In this article, I’ll be discussing just one award category—my favorite award—Best Musical.

What is the Tony Award for Best Musical?

Tony Awards—awards of excellence in the theatre industry in New York City—have been presented since 1947. A Best Musical Tony Award has been presented since 1950 to the producer of the musical theatre production voted the Best Musical to have opened its run on Broadway during the past year.

Who votes for the Tony Awards?

The voting procedure and list of eligible voters for the Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre (Tony Awards) has changed several times over the years. Currently, there are approximately 700 persons eligible to vote for the Tony Award nominees. Among these people are the board of directors of the American Theatre Wing; voting members of the Broadway League; members of the governing boards of several organizations—Actors' Equity Association, Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers, Dramatists Guild, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, United Scenic Artists; members of the Theatrical Council of the Casting Society of America; and members of the Tony Awards Nominating Committee.

Voters Must Attend All Nominated Productions

All persons eligible to vote for the Tony Award nominees must attend all nominated productions in the more than 25 voting categories. If someone hasn't attended a performance of all dramas or musicals in a given category, it is expected that they not vote in that category.

Best Musical — 2012: Once

The Tony Award for Best Musical in 2012 was presented to Once. The production is an adaptation of a movie of the same name, the setting for which is a bar in Dublin, Ireland. The musical is expected to open in the West End of London, England on April 9, 2013 at the Phoenix Theatre.

Best Musical — 2011: The Book of Mormon

The Tony Award for Best Musical in 2011 was presented to The Book of Mormon, a religious satire musical from the same team which created South Park. The video which follows is from the 2011 Tony Awards presentation television program.

Best Musical — 2010: Memphis

Memphis received the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2010. The video which follows is from the 2010 Tony Awards presentation television program.

      Dave (davenmidtown),

It's nice to "see" you again. Thanks for reading my article and being the first person to comment in it. I appreciate your very kind words and your sharing my Hub.

I've published Hubs about the history of the Tony Awards; The Phantom of the Opera; and the productions which were nominated for Best Musical at the Tony Awards, but lost. I was remiss in not writing about the musicals which won the Best Musical award...until now.

What a wonderful hub, I listened to each video and was mesmerized. You did a brilliant article here Daisy. I had the opportunity to see a few live musicals and plays when I visited London England a few years back and I enjoyed them so much. Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera are two of my favorites of all time. Thank you for sharing this great work with us. Voted up and shared.

Thank you for this nice article!

I am very pleased that in Ottawa we can have some those musicals! My husband and I had the chance to see a few of those shows : The Phantom of the Opera (once here in Ottawa and once in NY), The Lion King for our 35th wedding anniversary and the last one was Billy Elliot the Musical this January 1st! My favorite one is The Lion King. The costumes, the set, the music.... just everything was wonderful!

I would like to have the possibility to see more of them!

      Voted up and interesting :-)

Thanks, too, for sharing my Hub. Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera are two of my favorite musical theatre productions. I saw them both in the West End in London, England. I also saw Phantom in Los Angeles.

I've published three other theatrical production articles...about the history of the Tony Awards; The Phantom of the Opera; and the productions which were nominated for Best Musical at the Tony Awards, but lost. You'll be epecially interested in reading my Phantom article, since the musical is one of your favorites.

It's nice to "see" you again. Thanks for reading and commenting in my article. How exciting that you've acted and sang in musicals!

I'm currently conducting research for an article about South Pacific. The musical won several Tony Awards in the 1940s, and the revival won a number of awards in 2008.

I'd like to see more musicals because I love them. I live far away from any theater that would have them. I did see Phantom in Miami several years ago, and it was unforgettable. I'd love to see Les Mis on stage. Just saw the movie and loved that.

      Mary (mary615),

Thanks for reading my article and posting your comment. It's unfortunate you don't live near any venues in which musicals are performed. The alternatives...watching performances on public television or renting DVDs...don't come close to the energy of a live performance.

I hope you get to see the stage version of Les Misérables. I saw the musical in the West End in London, England. What a terrific production!

I've seen many of these musicals live, but unfortunately, none of the ones after 2003. I think my favorite in the past decade is the "Book of Mormon" which I've only had the chance to listen to on CD. I thought the tunes were catchy and funny, the topics relevant and it highlights the ignorance we in the U.S. have of Africa. Voting this Up and Interesting.

      Dianna (teaches12345),

Thanks for reading my article and posting your comment. I usually don't watch awards shows, but I do enjoy seeing the Tony Awards. There are so many production numbers from the musicals in the program, one gets a good idea of which musicals one might like to see should the opportunity arise.

      Daisy,

Theater is my subject of interest. Most successful theater productions in Nepal are musicals. I have watched some movie adaptations of Broadways musicals. They are brilliant.

I'm sharing this in multiple platforms.

If you ever plan a trip to New York City, please let me know well in advance. I'll see whether we can fit a trip across the US into our schedule and meet you there. What fun it would be to attend some Broadway musical theatre performances together!

      Nell,

Thanks for reading my article and adding your comment. I've heard of most of the musicals, but I'm not familiar with the story of a number of them.

The Phantom of the Opera is a terrific musical theatre production. So is Les Misérables. Have you seen a live production of Les Mis?
