The idea of Pokémon initially came into the mind of Santoshi Tajiri, who developed it in 1995. Today, it is a media franchise and managed by The Pokémon Company which is an association of Creatures, Nintendo and Game Freak.

Basically, Pokémon is a name given to fictional creatures who are trained by human beings (called as Pokémon Trainers) to make them strong enough to compete each other for sport. Pokémon can be used as a singular as well as plural term, for example it is correct if you say "Pokémon is a fictional character" or "Pokémon are fictional characters".

It has been two decade, when Pokémon was released in 1996. Its original name was Pocket Monsters Red and Green.

With its growing popularity, its owners have launched various games such as Pokémon Go and many more. Moreover, there are various movies launched since 1998 that are related to Pokémon and its trainers, especially highlighting Ash as the most famous Pokémon Trainer in all the movies. It is fine to say that there is no movie with low ratings, but yes, there are movies who could only managed to receive average ratings from the viewers. Let us see, which these movies are:

1. Pokémon 4Ever

Other Names: Pokémon 4Ever: Celebi - Voice of the Forest, Pocket Monsters the Movie: Celebi A Timeless Encounter

  • Ash and his friends Misty, Brock and Pikachu are on their Johto journey, where they enter a forest after seeing a Pokémon named Suicune.
  • On entering the forest, they find Sam who has travelled forty years ahead in the future along with his Pokémon Celebi.
  • Next day, Celebi happens to get caught by Team Rocket and Iron Masked Marauder, who turns the Pokémon using the Dark Ball.
  • Dark Ball is an evil ball with special powers that can turn any Pokémon wicked and magnifies and enhances their powers to the highest level possible.
  • With the help of now evil Celebi, Iron Masked Marauder tries to kill both Ash and Sam, but they are rescued by Suicune.
  • Brock’s Onix and Suicune get engaged in war with Marauder’s Tyranitar, while Ash, Sam and Pikachu get success in helping Celebi to recall its memories.
  • Then Celebi and the rest destroy the Marauder’s dark ball causing Iron Masked Marauder to lose all his captured Pokémon.
  • After winning, Celebi helps Sam to get back to his own time and Ash with his team move ahead on his journey.
  • In the end, it is also revealed that Ash’s Professor Oak is a grown up Sam.

The movie grossed $28 million at the Box Office.

2. Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened

Other name: Pocket Monsters Best Wishes! The Movie: ExtremeSpeed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens

  • Ash, Iris and Cilan visit Pokémon Hills, a nature park in New Tork City. At that place, Ash befriends Douse Drive Genesect, but thinking that Ash is hurting him, other Genesect attack Ash. Suddenly, Mewtwo appears and rescue Ash and his friends.
  • The same night, the Genesect Army, in search of home, starts to build cocoon over the Pokémon Hills that causes interference in the city’s power supply.
  • Ash with his friends goes underground to fix the problem, but they turn their way to Pokémon Hills, where Iris realizes that the Genesect are making Pokémon Hills their home by building cocoon, which is also the cause for the city’s lost power supply.
  • Pokémon native to Pokémon Hills, MewTwo and Ash with his friends try to stop the Genesect Army and the fight begins. In the mid of the fight, the Genesect comes to know that Ash, Iris, Cilan, MewTwo and other Pokémon are not their enemies.
  • At the end, Ash suggests them to build their nest in Absentia National Park as it is the only place where their Panna Lotuses, naturally, grow. On the other hand, MewTwo evolves into MewTwo Y and flies off.

The movie grossed nearly $33 million at the Box Office.

3. Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction

  • Diamond Domain, a name of a country is a home to powerful gem known as Heart Diamond. The gem is a source of energy for the whole kingdom.
  • Many Carbink, including their princess, live in that country. The princess is a Jewel Pokémon, who is also called as Diancie, and is the creator of Heart Diamond.
  • Unfortunately, Diancie is losing her power as well as the capability to control the Heart Diamond. Due to the same reason, her country is falling apart and turning into a big chaos.
  • Hope comes, when one day she meets with Ash and his friends. She asks them to help her by finding a Pokémon, who is a Life Pokémon named Xerneas and has the power to restore the capability of the Heart Diamond.
  • But, on their way, they confront the Pokémon of Destruction named Yveltal. The Pokémon is also responsible for stealing the life in the Kalos Region.
  • Besides Yveltal, they are also stopped by Team Rocket, who is accompanied by jewel thieves named Ninja Riot and Marilyn Flame.
  • With lots of twists and turns, the ending is good as always, Ash finally helps Diancie to win the lost country and the power of Heart Diamond is restored.

The movie grossed $28 million at the Box Office.

4. Pokémon: Spell Of The Unown

Other names: Pokémon 3: The Movie, Pocket Monsters the Movie: Lord of the "UNKNOWN" Tower

  • In a town named Greenfield, research scientist Professor Hale with his assistant named Skyler, conducts research on Unown, but unfortunately get sucked into the Unown’s dimension.
  • Left alone as mother also disappeared previously, Hale’s daughter Molly finds Unown images in a box of tablets. She starts to assemble those letters, which turns out to be Unown themselves.
  • Unown’s power helps Molly fulfil all her dreams. Her house turns into a crystal palace. She gets her father in the disguise of Entei, who is created by Unown. To stop this mishappening, Professor Oak, Delia Ketchum, who is Ash’s mother, and various others come to help.
  • On Molly’s request to have a mother, Entei kidnaps and hypnotizes Delia to force her to think that she is Molly’s mother. Meanwhile, Ash, Misty, Brock and their Pokémon visit Greenfield and try to rescue Delia.
  • Ash finally, locates Molly and Delia, but he needs to fight with Entei first. Entei throws Ash and Pikachu off a cliff, but they are rescued by Charizard.
  • When Entei is about kill Charizard as well, Molly stops him and agrees to leave with Ash. Entei reveals that he was a delusion of his father and actually created by Unown.
  • The Unown start to lose control of their powers that causes the group to be sealed in the mansion, but Pikachu and Charizard with the help of Entei bring back the Unown to the present dimension. Unfortunately, in all this course of incidents, Entei dies.
  • At the end, Professor Hale and Skyler returns as well as Molly’s long-lost mother finally appears.

The movie grossed more than $68 million at the Box Office.

5. Pokémon the Movie: Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice

Other name: Pocket Monsters Best Wishes! The Movie: Kyurem vs. the Sacred Swordsman: Keldeo

  • In an urge to become a member of Swords of Justice, Keldeo goes to Full Court and fights against Kyrem pretending that he is a member of the Swords of Justice.
  • Kyurem, who transforms into White Kyurem during battle, breaks Keldeo’s horn. Keldeo runs away and Kyurem freezes the Swords of Justice.
  • Keldeo is rescued by Ash and his friends at the train station, who take it to the Pokémon Center for treatment. Later that night, the group along with Keldeo go to Full Court to free the Swords of Justice, but they have to fight the Kyurem first.
  • Keldeo, finally gaining courage, effectively fights with Kyurem and learn to use Secret Sword, the most important thing to become a member of the Swords of Justice. The fight causes the collapsing of Full Court, also releasing the Swords of Justice.
  • In a motive to save Ash and his friends, Keldeo gets hurt and Kyurem wins, but his courage leads him to become the member of the Swords of Justice.
  • At the end, the members take oath together.

The movie grossed $46 billion at the Box Office.

6. Pokémon: The Movie 2000: The Power of One

Other names: Pokémon 2000, Pocket Monsters the Movie: Revelation Lugia

  • In greed to capture the legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres and the “Beast of the Sea” Lugia, Lawrence flies in his hovercraft to the Orange Islands, where he successfully captures Moltres. Consequently, birds’ balance of power over the world’s climate starts to collapse.
  • On the other hand, Ash with his friends, Misty and Tracey, happen to land in Shamouti due to horrendous storm, where a festival is being celebrated.
  • The festival maiden named Melody asks Ash to bring three glass balls from each of those birds to balance the world’s climate.
  • Reaching at the destined place, Ash is able to free Moltres, while Zapdos brings down Lawrence hovercraft.
  • Later, all the three birds start to fight with each other and are stopped only by telepathic powers of Lugia who explains them that the weather can be calmed by the legend’s Chosen One, who is Ash.
  • With the help of Lugia, Ash collects the treasure from each of three birds and return to Shamouti Island’s shrine with Misty and Tracey. After placing the treasure together, Melody plays Lugia’s song which normalizes the weather.

The movie grossed nearly $140 billion at the Box Office, almost five times of its budget.

7. Pokémon: The First Movie

Other names: Pokémon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, Pocket Monsters the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back!

  • Using a fossilised eyelash of the Pokémon Mew, a group of scientists clone it to create a super powerful Pokémon Mewtwo. After waking up, when Mewtwo realizes the scientists’ evil plan, he destroys the laboratory.
  • Irked by human beings’ behaviour, Mewtwo plans to take revenge against humanity.
  • On the other hand, Ash, Misty and Brock arrive at Old Shore Wharf to compete at New Island. Despite of heavy storm and Team Rocket’s interference, Ash makes it to the island, where he challenges Mewtwo to fight him.
  • Mewtwo with his clones capture all the Pokémon and take them to the lab to clone them, but ash destroys the cloning machine, setting all the Pokémon free.
  • Ash gets wounded and faints due to firing line of Pokémon attacks, Pikachu tries to revive him, but fails. Then, the tears of Pokémon, legendary medicine, are able to heal Ash and bring him back to the consciousness.
  • On seeing Ash’s sacrifice, Mewtwo realizes that not all humans are bad; it solely depends on their life choices. Finally, Mewtwo erases everyone’s memories and Ash, Misty and Brock are back in Old Shore Wharf, clueless that how they got there.

The movie grossed more than $160 million at the Box office.

8. Pokémon: Jirachi Wish Maker

Other name: Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation the Movie: The Wishing Star of Seven Nights: Jirachi

  • Jirachi, a legendary Pokémon, wakes up only for seven days in thousand years to absorb the energy of the Millennium Comet. The energy is released into the Earth to grow the area called as Forina, where Jirachi resides.
  • But, a magician named Butler along with his girlfriend Diane takes away the rock, in which Jirachi is encased, from Forina. Butler’s motive behind this is to resurrect the legendary Pokémon named Groudon, which can only be done with the help of Jirachi’s power.
  • Meanwhile, Ash with his friends reaches at a festival, which is the celebration of the appearance of Millennium Comet that is seen only for seven days in thousand years.
  • At the festival, Butler gives the rock, in which Jirachi is encased, to Ash and his friend May, so that it can finally hatch into Jirachi.
  • Learning the evil plans of Butler, Pokémon Absol takes Jirachi along with Diane, Ash and his friends back to Forina, but Butler has already set a trap there to capture Jirachi.
  • Despite of Ash’s intervention, Butler gets success in harnessing Jirachi’s power, which creates a fake Groudon, though. Groudon turn Forina into wasteland by killing plants and absorbing energy from the Earth as well as living creatures.
  • When Diane, Butler’s long time girlfriend, is also absorbed by Groudon, Butler realizes what is more important to him. Now, with the help of Ash and friends, he tries to reverse the processes which can meltdown fake Groudon and gets success in it, resulting into Groudon’s death.
  • Finally, Jirachi reabsorbs his energy and moves back to his place in Forina to sleep for another thousand years.
  • Ash, his companion Pikachu and friends return back to festival to watch the fireworks.

The movie grossed $34 million at the Box Office.

9. Pokémon the Movie: Black—Victini and Reshiram and White—Victini and Zekrom

Other names: Pocket Monsters Best Wishes! The Movie: Victini and the White Hero: Reshiram, Pocket Monsters Best Wishes! The Movie: Victini and the Black Hero: Zekrom

  • Ash, Iris and Cilan visit a harvest festival in a town called as the Sword of the Vale, where they are guided by a person named Damon and also meets Damon’s sister, Carlita and mother Juanita as well as town’s mayor Mannes.
  • There, Ash befriends a Pokémon named Victini and tries to take it outskirts of the town, but fails as Victini is surrounded by a barrier, which is held by several pillars.
  • Mayor Mannes explains that Victini’s powers were used by a king to move the town’s castle at its present spot and create the barrier. This was done to protect the town when the king’s sons lead the war between Reshiram and Zekrom, who ultimately transformed into stones and fell asleep.
  • Damon explains the two legendary Pokémon can bring peace to the place and reunite the scattered people of the Vale. He also says that he was able to found them under the castle.
  • With the help of Victini’s power, Damon prepares to move the castle that makes the Dragon force destructive. Unaware of the fact, Damon tortures Victini, which can eventually results into its death.
  • To stop Damon, Ash successfully finds the two legendary Pokémon, Reshiram and Zekrom, who join their forces to stop the destructive Dragon force and release Victini.
  • Due to the unstable power resulting from the Dragon force, castle floats up in the sky that makes Ash and Pikachu unconscious. On seeing this, Victini releases all its power that revives Ash as well as blasts the pillars apart.
  • Damon, Zekrom and Reshiram move the castle back to the town and seal the Dragon Force away. Finally, the People of the vale reunite with each other in the restored valley.
  • The movie shows the roles swapping between Reshiram and Zekrom.

At the Box office, it grossed around $60 million.

10. Pokémon Heroes

Other names: Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias, Pocket Monsters the Movie: The Guardians of Alto Mare

  • The city named Alto Mare is under supervision of two legendary Pokémon named Latias and Latios.
  • Once, an evil Pokémon trainer terrorize the citizens of Alto Mare using Kabutops and Aerodactyl, who is stopped by Latios, but in the fight Latios dies leaving his children orphans. It is said that his soul resides within a jewel known as the Soul Dew.
  • At present, Ash, Misty and Brock visit Alto Mare, where Ash and Misty take part in the Tour de Alto Mare which is a water chariot race. In the race, Misty wins and the former champion, Ross, gives them a tour of the city.
  • They later visit the curator of a local museum named Lorenzo, who explains them about city’s history and introduces them to the DMA (Defence Mechanism of Alto Mare) as well as about the Soul Dew.
  • Eventually, Ash discovers a hidden garden, which is a home to Latias and Latios. But, Annie and Oakley, members of Team Rocket, steal the Soul Dew and capture Latios that help them to control the DMA.
  • Oakley uses DMA to revive the unconscious Pokémon that will help them to capture Latias, but before it could happen, Ash and Latias crash the unconscious Aerodactyl into a building and other friends’ Pokémon rescue them from kabutops.
  • After rescuing Latios, the Soul Dew starts to fade that causes the DMA to shut down and city’s water becomes a great terrifying tsunami.
  • To stop tsunami, Latios and Latias use all their powers, in which Latios sacrifices himself. As a result, the city’s water returns back to normal and Latios become the new Soul Dew.
  • In the process, the unconscious Pokémon return to fossil states, while Annie and Oakley get caught inside the DMA and later sent to jail.

The movie was rated better than any of the above movies, but could only collect $21 million at the Box Office.
