Rani Mukherjee is one of the most popular Bollywood Actresses known for her brilliant performances in movies. Rani Mukerji was born on 21st March 1978 in Kolkatta of West Bengali to Ram Mukherjee and Krishna Mukherjee. Rani’s father is a retired director and one of the founders of the famous Filmalaya Studios and mother a playback singer. She is the cousin of Kajol, Mohnish Bahl and Tanisha. She is also the niece of Bengali actress Debashree Roy and actor Joy Mukherjee. Her Brother Raja Mukherjee is a film producer turned director. Rani is a trained dancer and know dance forms like Odissi.
Though Rani comes from a family with film connection, she was not very keen on acting in movies. She did a cameo on her fathers film Biyar Phool on his insistence at the age of 14 in the year 1992. In 1994, she was offered a film called Aa Gale Lag Jaa by family friend Salim Akhtar which she turned down. In 1997, Salim Akhtar offered her a film called Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat as the female lead which she took up. Unfortunately, the film did not fare well at the box-office. In 1998, she got noticed with her performance in the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. After that she appeared in a series of movies most of which was successful at the box office. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai opposite Shahrukh Khan
In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Rani Mukherji played the role of Tina Malhotra, the daughter of Mr. Malhotra (played by Anupam Kher) who is the Principal of St. Xavier's college. She joins the college and becomes close friends with Rahul Khanna (played by Shahrukh Khan) and Anjali Sharma (played by Kajol Devgn). Anjali who is in love with Rahul is heartbroken when she finds that Rahul is in love with Tina. Rahul marries Tina. She dies after giving birth to a baby girl due to complications in her pregnancy. Before dying she writes eight letters to her daughter - one for each of her first eight birthdays. Before dying, Tina asks Rahul to name their daughter Anjali in memory of Anjali Sharma. In a letter she asks her daughter to unite Rahul and Anjali as she feels guilty coming between them. She even asks Rahul to name their daughter as Anjali in memory of Anjali Sharma. Years later, Rahul and Tina's daughter Anjali succeeds in bringing Rahul and Anjali together.

Saathiya opposite Vivek Oberoi
In Saathiya, Rani Mukherji played the role of Suhani Sharma who falls in love with Aditya Sehgal (played by Vivek Oberoi). The couple elopes and get married. They start their married life together in a dilapidated house. Soon they start having trouble in the marriage. A misunderstanding makes Suhani think that Aditya is having an affair. She walks out of the house after having a fight with them and get hit by the car driven by Savitri (played by Tabu), Savitri’s husband IAS officer Yeshwant Rao (played by Shah Rukh Khan) takes the blame of the accident and Suhani is hospitalized. Aditya who was miserable not knowing the whereabouts of Suhani reaches the hospital. He threatens Yashwant when he finds that he was at fault for Suhani’s accident. Savitri clears the misunderstanding and Aditya makes up with Yeshwant. Suhani regains consciousness and the couple makes up with a hug.
Saathiya was the Hindi remake of the Tamil film Alaipayuthey directed by Mani Ratnam. This movie was directed by Shaad Ali and produced by Bobby Bedi, Yash Chopra and Mani Ratnam. In Hum Tum, Rani Mukherji played the role of Rhea Prakash. She meets Karan (Saif Ali Khan)who flirts with her. They meet again and Rheacauses the break-up between Karan and his current girlfriend (Shenaz Treasurywala). Three years later Karan helps his mother plan Rhea’s marriage with Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan). Karan and Rhea this time part on good terms. Years later, Karan finds that Rhea lost her husband in a car accident. Black opposite Amitabh Bachchan
In Black, Rani Mukherji played the role of a blind, deaf and mute woman named Michelle McNally.She grows up as a violent and uncontrollable child because of her inability to see, hear and express. Her parents appoint Debraj Sahai (Amitabh Bachchan) as her teacher. Debraj’s harsh methods for teaching is disapproved by Michelle’s father who asks him to pack his bags. However, Debraj stays back at the insistence of her mother while her father is away for 20 days. Debraj manages to teach Michelle some words and better manners, and the Mcnally’s decide to keep him as her teacher. Under Debraj’s guidance, Michelle shows great improvement that Debraj convinces the Principal of a university to grant her an interview for admission which she passes and joins to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree. Michelle moves away from home and lives with Debraj and one of her servants. She struggles to complete her Bachelors but fails year after year because of her handicap and dependency on Debraj. Debraj then begins to succumb to Alzheimer's making things even more difficult for her. Michelle reconciles with her sister Sara jealous of her parents' affection for Michelle throughout her life. After attending Sara's wedding, Michelle begins to wonder about love and asks Debraj to kiss her on the lips. Debraj kisses her reluctantly but feels guilty and leaves the house. After twelve years after enrollment, Michelle manages to pass BA but refuses to wear the Graduation robe as her teacher Debraj is not there to watch her. She meets Debraj who has lost his ability to remember his past and even how to speak in the hospital wearing the graduation robe. And there they have a role reversal and Michelle takes it on her to be his teacher.
Black was inspired by Helen Keller's autobiography The Story of My Life. This movie was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Anshuman Swami. This movie was a moderate success at the box office and a critically acclaimed film. No One Killed Jessica with Vidya Balan
In No One Killed Jessica based on the controversial Jessica Lal murder case, Rani Mukherjee played the role of reporter Meera Gaity who teams up with the victim's sister Sabrina Lall(played by Vidya Balan) to bring her case justice. Myra Karn plays the role of Jessica Lal, a celebrity barmaid who was shot dead by a socialite for refusing the serve him drinks. The film was directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and Produced by Ronnie Screwvala.
No One Killed Jessica was received well by the audience and critics. The performances of Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee was appreciated. Even the music of the film was a success. In Saawariya, the character played by Rani Mukerji (Gulabji) is introduced as the narrator of the story. Gulabji is a prostitute who frequents RK Bar. She meets the Bar’s lead singer Yash Deora (played by Ranbir Kapoor) one night on the street. Despite of knowing her profession, he treats her with respect. When Yash tells her that he is looking for a place to stay, Gulabji guides him to Lilian’s (played by Zohra Sehgal) house where he gets accommodation. Yash falls in love with Sakina (played by Sonam Kapoor) and shares his feelings for the girl to Gulabji who asks him to tell Sakina how he feels. Sakina rejects him and goes away. Yash goes to Gulabji and tells her that he wants to spend the night with her. Hurt by his words, Gulabji throws Deora out of the brothel onto the street where he gets beaten up.
Saawariya was directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.The film is inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story "White Nights" was a flop at the Box Office. This movie was the debut film of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Salman Khan makes a guest appearance in the movie. Rani Mukherji was nominated the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film.

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag opposite Abhishek Bachchan
In Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Rani Mukerji plays the role of Vibhavari Sahay who is the elder daughter of Shivshankar Sahay (played by Anupam Kher) and Sabitri (played by Jaya Bachchan). Her parents affectionately call her Badki.She is protective of her family and goes to Mumbai to find work so that she can support the family. Circumstances force her to become the exclusive call girl "Natasha". She tells her family that she is an event planner and sends the income she receives from her profession so that her father’s medical expenses and her sister’s study is taken care of. Vibhavari’s sister Shubhavariaka Chutki (played by Konkona Sen Sharma) reaches Mumbai unannounced to live with Badki. Chutki joins as a trainee at the Matrix Advertising agency and falls in love with her boss Vivaan (played by Kunal Kapoor). Badki too falls in love with an attorney Rohan (played by Abhishek Bachchan) but leaves him because of her profession. The sisters return to Banaras for Chutki's wedding where Badki finds that Rohan is the elder brother of Vivaan.
Laaga Chunari Mein Daag was produced by Pradeep Sarkar and Produced by Adithya Chopra and Pradeep Sarkar. This film was a flop at the box-office. However, the performances of Rani Mukerji and Konkana Sen Sharma in the movie were appreciated. Rani Mukerji was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie.
Bunty Aur Babli opposite Abhishek Bachchan
In Bunty aur Babli, Rani Mukherji played the role of Vimmi Saluja aka Babli. Vimmi dreams of becoming a supermodel and runs away from home when her parents arranges marriage for her. She meets Rakesh Trivedi (Abhishek Bachchan)who also has run away at the railway station and become friends with him. They support each other and try to earn a living the rightful way. A businessman Rakesh approached uses Rakesh’s ideas to make money for himself. So the couple cons the Guy and takes the money. Then they realize that it is easy to con people and starts their new career by adopting the fake names of 'Bunty' and 'Babli'. The couple successfully cons people and pull off scam after scam that they become national news. They also fall in love and seal their association by getting married. Bunty and Babli become the target of ACP Dashrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) who relentlessly pursues them across India in the hopes of putting them behind bars. Matters become complicated for the couple when they have a child. The couple decides to leave the world of crime for the sake of their child but gets caught by the ACP.
Bunty aur Babli was directed by Shaad Ali and produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra. This film was one of the biggest Bollywood hits. Abhishek’s wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan makes a guest appearance in the film by dancing with the real son and father duo to the song ‘Kajra Re’ which was a hit. Rani Mukherji was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie.
Yuva opposite Abhishek Bachchan
Yuva is a multistarer movie based on Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film ‘Aaytha Ezhuthu’. Yuva is the story of three young couples and one fateful incident on Kolkata's Howrah Bridge which changes their lives forever. Rani Mukherji played the role of Shashi Biswas who loves and marries a goon named Lallan Singh (played by Abhishek Bachchan) who abuses her. This film also stars Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, Kareena Kapoor, Esha Deol, Om Puri and Sonu Sood.

Chalte Chalte opposite Shahrukh Khan
Chalte Chalte is the story of two individuals coming from two different strata of society. What seems to be a dream love affair becomes a nightmare after the couple marriages and faces the harsh realities of life. Differences crop up between the couple when Priya’s wealthy aunt offers them monetary assistance seeing the condition of the household.Things become complicated when Priya borrows money from her ex boyfriend Sameer to save Raj from financial problems without telling him. The couple quarrel, separate and then reconcile at the end of the film. Apart from the protagonists, the movie also stars Jas Arora, Satish Shah, Lilette Dubey and Johny Lever.
Chalte Chalte was directed by Aziz Mirza and produced by Juhi Chawla, Shahrukh Khan and Aziz Mirza. This movie was a hit at the Indian box office. Rani Mukherji was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie.
Another movie of Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherji worth mentioning is Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. KANK tells the story of two married individuals with different partners falling in love. Rani Mukherji’s character of Maya is married to Rishi Talwar (played by Abhishek Bachchan) while Shahrukh’s character Dev Saran is married to Rhea (played by Preity Zinta).
