Top 10 Bollywood Horror Movies
Horror is a genre which I generally avoid, be it books or movies. One reason is that I get too scared and have nightmares. The other reason is that there is a dearth of good Bollywood horror movies.
Horror movies never used to do well in Bollywood. Most of the horror movies were being produced by Ramsay Brothers and were considered as C grade movies with poor costumes & graphics, lots of skin show and a below average story. But there was a change for the good after ‘Raaz’ became a hit.

As I mentioned earlier, Raaz was a game-changer. It was based on the Hollywood movie ‘What lies beneath’ which starred Michelle Pfieffer. With Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea in lead roles, Raaz went on to become a super hit. The music of the movie was quite a rage. It was rare at that time for a successful heroine to sign a horror movie at the time but Bipasha took the risk and it was worth it.
Mahal which starred Ashok Kumar and Madhubala is considered to be the first horror movie of Bollywood. Based on the subject of reincarnation, the movie was scary and the haunting songs of the movie were simply awesome. Directed by Kamal Amrohi, the movie launched both playback singer Lata Mangeshkar and the leading lady Madhubala into super-stardom.
With a stellar starcast comprising of Ajay Devgan, Urmila Matondkar, Rekha and Fardeen Khan, Bhoot is one of the best horror movies by Ram Gopal Verma. It was different from a typical Bollywood movie as it did not contain songs.
Bees Saal Baad
Bees Saal Baad is a 1962 Indian Hindi-language psychological thriller film.It remains one of the best horror movies of Bollywood. The mysterious woman in white saree carrying a candle in the midnight singing ‘Kahin deep jale kahin dil’ is as haunting even now as ever.
Raat is a 1992 Indian Hindi supernatural thriller film written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma starring Revathi in the role of protagonist. This is yet another brilliant movie by Ram Gopal Verma where a kitten dies and its spirit possesses the lead actress. This cult classic is sure worth a watch.

A newly wedded couple in a deserted royal mansion with a mysterious caretaker – predictable story, isn’t it? Yet the way it has been artistically shot sets it apart from the rest. The film stars debutant actors Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma as the married couple was a critical and commerical success.
Ragini MMS is a 2011 Indian found footage horror film. Loosely inspired by ‘Paranormal Activity’ and partly based on a real incident, this movie manages to keep the crowd on its edge. A young couple went to a deserted house at the outskirts of the city to have some fun but to their horror, they found themselves trapped with some bizarre happenings.
Darna Mana Hai
Who would have thought that an apple could look so scary? Darna Mana Hai is a 2003 Indian anthology horror film directed by Ram Gopal Verma.Six short stories with unexpected twists in one movie- Ram Gopal Verma once again proved himself in this movie with its innovative script and direction. This unique and innovative attempt featured many Bollywood celebrities like Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivadasani etc.
Kohra is a 1964 classic which starred Waheeda Rehman and Biswajeet. The lead pair meets, falls in love and get married. They come to the husband’s palatial mansion and soon husband leaves for a business trip. Here the wife learns about the first wife who had died under mysterious circumstances and starts experiencing supernatural phenomenon in the mansion. The film was an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel Rebecca, which was previously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock as Academy Award-winning Rebecca (1940).
Phoonk is a 2008 horror movie. An atheist is forced to consult an exorcist after his daughter shows signs of being possessed. Based on superstition and black magic, this creepy movie by Ram Gopal Verma is so scary that a prize of 5 lakhs was announced for anyone who would take the challenge of watching the movie in the theatre alone.
