Hollywood! Stars in the Making

We all love Hollywood movies with our personal favourites which we like to watch a little too often, just as we have our favourite actors/actresses. Within this list we are looking at the rising Hollywood stars, some of which you will have certainly heard of with others, whom you will most likely have no clue concerning their names.

In Hollywood, most actors find they cannot cut it with a failed career before it even started making it one of the riskier career paths to follow. However the stars in this list certainly have a place in Hollywood as long as they stay clear of alcohol, drugs and keep a low profile in their personal lives.

Rooney Mara

#1- Rooney Mara

To kick off the list, we have decided to start with Rooney Mara who is quite simply a star in the making. Mara debuted in the TV Series 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit' in 2006 and after a few years of hard work, she gained the role as Nancy Holbrook in the classic remake of 'A Nightmare on Elm street' in 2010. Mara finally started getting noticed in Hollywood for her talents and landed an even bigger role as Lisbeth Salander in the controversial western remake of the hit movie 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' in 2011, which pushed her career into the Hollywood highlights.

Mara then in 2013, found herself in 3 movies, all fairly good which included; 'Ain't Them Bodies Saint's', 'Side Effects' (starring alongside Channing Tatum and Jude Law) and 'Her'. Mara's upcoming movies which seem as though they have the potential to do well in the box office include; 'Pan' (the story of Peter Pan and Neverland, 2015) and 'The Girl Who Played with Fire' (sequel to 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo').

With the sequel to 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' in the pipeline for Mara, it is certain that she is going to be in some amazing movies in the foreseeable future. Mara has a nag for being part of great movies as proven with her star roles in 'A Nightmare on Elm Street', 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and 'Side Effects'. If like myself, it wasn't too long ago that Mara was just a face in the crowd for me but now she is a face I remember but I still seem to forget her name. Only time will tell if she will remain a face I remember or that as well as a name I remember. This I must say will only be the case if Mara excels in her performances as an actress, receiving some great roles which if anything she has done so far counts, she should have nothing to worry about.

Alex Pettyfer
Alex Pettyfer | Source

#2- Alex Pettyfer

Alex Pettyfer is a face we have all seen in the movies as he has popped up in some great movies. Pettyfer debuted in his first Hollywood movie in 2006, starring as Alex Rider in 'Stormbreaker'. Although the idea of a teenager becoming a secret agent, seems like a pretty cool idea, which was the idea behind the story for 'Stormbreaker', it is fair to say that the movie did not deliver on suspense or excitement. In the box office 'Stormbreaker' did average with a production budget of $40 million and a worldwide gross of $23 million it is fairly plain to see that the movie was not going to see a sequel.

However this did not hold Pettyfer from moving forward with his acting career in Hollywood, as in 2011 he landed the role as John Smith in 'I am Number Four' which saw Pettyfer as the leading man. Although a little like 'Stormbreaker', it did not receive a very good reception from critics which is largely due to the overemphasis on action during the movie. With a budget of $50 million and a worldwide gross of $149 million, it is easy to see that just like 'Stormbreaker', it is unlikely there will be a sequel which is disappointing for the rising star (Pettyfer).

Although it has been a rough start for Pettyfer, he has still managed to help take part in some good movies which includes; 'In Time' (starring alongside Justin Timberlake), 'Magic Mike' and 'The Butler'. One thing is for sure, Pettyfer has talents as an actor but requires roles which stretch those talents rather than limiting them. This I am afraid to say, I haven't seen yet for Pettyfer but given time, he will gain a role which makes him a Hollywood star we all know the name of.

Henry Cavill
Henry Cavill | Source

#3- Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill was born to be a Hollywood superstar, not only having the talents as an actor along with the abilities to get the job done, but also the looks which a Hollywood superstar needs to land the roles. Cavill has proved my very point by almost landing some of the greatest roles in Hollywood in the past which includes the role as 007 which in the end went to Daniel Craig for 'Casino Royale'. As well as the role as Edward Cullen in 'Twilight' which eventually went to Robert Pattinson. Then finally the role as Superman in 'Superman Returns' which eventually went to Brandon Routh, which proves Cavill has talent on screen which directors, producers and writers have noticed.

On the other hand on a more positive note, it has all worked out well so far for Cavill as all of those hard working years, of losing out on great roles have finally paid off as he has now landed the role, he once lost as Superman in the modern remake 'Man of Steel' (2013). 'Man of Steel' did very well for a big budget movie which had a budget of $225 million and made a worldwide gross of $668 million, making it a success. Although critics gave it an average rating, the proof is in the money as 'Man of Steel' is a success in the eyes of the profit.

With 2 movies in the pipeline for Cavill in which he will play Superman, it is certain other great roles will follow inevitably making Cavill a Hollywood A-Lister. As of yet however, it is looking good for Cavill but he should not become complacent as there is nothing production Companies hate more than losing money. So Cavill will have to pick his roles carefully, so he doesn't wind up in too many movie flops.

Scott Eastwood
Scott Eastwood | Source

#4- Scott Eastwood

Scott Eastwood is the son of the legendary Clint Eastwood which means that Scott has a lot to live up to but it also gives him the boost actors need to gain respectable roles in movies. A few noteworthy movies to mention which Scott has starred in would include; Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Gran Torino (2008) and Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013). Scott has improved as an actor through the help of Clint (Scott's father), to gain more prominent roles within movies which has shown that Scott is certainly a rising Hollywood star.

Scotts potential to be a Hollywood star will all go down to the performances which he gives in the future as this will prove whether or not he is worthy of playing great roles. With lots of movies in the pipeline, I am sure that Scott will keep on proving his worth in Hollywood and in time he should build a name for himself.

Scott has a lot to live up to have Clint Eastwood as his father, but from what he has shown so far in the movies he has starred in, he can definitely act. However the pondering question is whether Scott can play the leading man rather than a side character in a big budget movie. This will be the deciding answer for whether or not Scott will become a hugely successful Hollywood star like his father (Clint Eastwood) or a side character and nothing more.

Imogen Poots
Imogen Poots | Source

#5- Imogen Poots

Imagen Poots is an interesting actress with definite potential in Hollywood, as she has proven that she has talent in the field of acting. Poots debuted in the movie 'V for Vendetta' which saw mild success with a worldwide gross of $132 million with a $54 million. Even so it started Poots on her path into Hollywood, then in 2007 starring in '28 Weeks Later' which again only saw mild success at the box office with a worldwide gross of $64 million with a $15 million. Poots however found more success than she'd bargained for in '28 weeks later', even though the movies didn't as it proved that she was an actress with serious talent.

In the years following Poots began gaining some respectable roles in some good movies which includes; Jane Eyre (2011), Fright Night (2011), Filth (2013) and Need for Speed (2014). Arguably the role in this descent line up of movies which gave her a push in the right direction, more so than the others was 'Fright Night' which did terribly at the box office, only receiving a mere $41 million in worldwide gross with a $30 million budget. Although, this was in no way a reflection on the quality of the movie as it proved to be entertaining and Poots performance was great during the movie. The only criticism I would have with 'Fright Night', is that it was a predictable ending but other than that I found the movie to be thoroughly enjoyable.

I personally believe that Poots has a lot more to show in her performances which as said with the other actors/actresses on this list, will only be proved with time. So far Poots is a likely contender to be a Hollywood star but for the time being we will have to wait and see.

Theo James
Theo James | Source

#6- Theo James

Theo James isn't just a pretty face, he is a talented actor with Hollywood potential. James's debuted in his first movie in 2010 in 'You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger', but found small success in 'The Inbetweeners Movie' in 2011 which portrayed his character as a general douche. The more creditable roles started in 2012 when James stared as a leading character in 'Underworld Awakening' which saw a worldwide gross of $160 million with a $70 million budget. With the reasonable success of 'Underworld Awakening', also came the reasonable success for James who finally landed a respectable role, which is key for a rising actor in Hollywood.

More success followed for James in 2013 with the arrival of a new fantasy movie adapted from a top selling fantasy novel, which seems to be an increasingly popular choice for production companies when deciding on what movies to put into production. As expected, 'Divergent' did very well on the box office making a worldwide gross of $266 million with an $85 million budget. This being further proof that the teen market is the bankable market to aim for when a production company is looking for a sure root to major profit with minimised risks. James certainly picked the right movie here as 'Divergent' has brought him a substantially large female fan base, as well as regular work as an actor since there is a sequel due out in 2015 for 'Divergent' called 'Insurgent'.

From what you have read so far about Theo James, I am sure you must think that he is a sure success already but sadly that is not the case as to ensure Hollywood success, getting into franchises is only a start. One must remember that once a franchise is finished, with no further releases, the star of the movie franchise must then seek to wow audiences again in new movies. This is proven to be a difficult task for actors/actresses as shown with other actors like Daniel Radcliffe (stared as Harry Potter in the fantasy epic 'Harry Potter' franchise) and Robert Pattinson (stared as Edward Cullen in the movie adaptation of the 'Twilight Saga' novels). These are just a couple of examples with many more out there suffering from this same problem. Although I am sure it will be different for James, but there are no guarantees in Hollywood for success even when success has surrounded an actor/actress for numerous years as it can disappear just as easily as it arrived.

The point I am trying to make is that to succeed as a Hollywood star, one must not only make way into a fantasy epic or an end of the world action/adventure as this will not lead to academy awards or Oscars etc. Instead they must seek to gain roles in powerful dramas with a distinct message which it is trying to get across, or a thriller as these are the movies which win actors/actresses awards which lead to lasting success in Hollywood.

Now all that must be said, is whether or not Theo James to gain the roles which could prove him to be Academy award worthy or even possibly even more worthy of a better known award like an Oscar possibly. James has a lot to prove, but for the time being he is surely a rising Hollywood star with the potential to make it in Hollywood long term.

Dave Franco
Dave Franco | Source

#7- Dave Franco

Dave Franco is a new face on the block in Hollywood with automatic attention due to having an already successful brother who is doing well in Hollywood, starring in great movies called, have you guessed yet! James Franco. With James Franco's substantial success in Hollywood, it would only make sense that his brother would take advantage of this. But the question, is whether or not Dave Franco has the same talent on screen as his brother, James Franco.

Dave debuted in his first movie in 2007 receiving a small role in the cult classic comedy 'Superbad' which wasn't a bad place to start for this loud character. Hollywood certainly has a taste for comedy as there seems to be a driving demand from audiences to create more comedies which get more outrageous every year. This is where Dave Franco fits in because like his brother, James Franco, they both seem to share a similar quality which is their humour as they set foot onto comedies immediately making audiences laugh.

Dave has stared in some good comedies which includes; Fright Night (2011), 21 Jump Street (2012), Warm Bodies (2013) and Bad Neighbours (2014). These movies have all proven that Dave has a place in Hollywood, landing some great roles which seem to suit his personality among the comedy genre. Although Dave will need to break out of the comedies sooner rather than later, to show audiences that he is capable of playing a more serious character expressing real emotion rather than purely happiness. In saying this, if Dave is anything like his brother (James Franco), then he should do well adapting to serious roles as well as the completely let loose roles which evidently, Dave has shown in the comedies he has stared in.

Only time will tell, as to whether Dave Franco, will be a name we all remember or just a face we see around in the movies. A rising star for sure, who may one day be some serious family competition for James Franco in battling for the best roles.

Nicholas Hoult
Nicholas Hoult | Source

#8- Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult is a British actor who at the starting point in his acting career bounced between British TV Series which lasted for some time before breaking into the Hollywood movies. Hoult debuted in his first TV Series 'Casualty' (British Series, 1996) with other British TV Series including; Silent Witness (1998), 'The Bill' (2000), 'Holby City' (2001), then finally gaining a lasting role as Tony Stonem in the TV Series called 'Skins' (2007-2008).

Hoult has also starred in some British movies which includes; 'About a Boy' (2002) and 'Kidulthood' (2006). Finally gaining a role in a Hollywood blockbuster movie called Clash of the Titans (2010), then in 2011 gaining a more up front character (Hank) in the hit movie 'X-Men: First Class' which did well in the box office with a worldwide gross of $353 million and a budget of $160 million.

Not long after the success of 'X-Men: First Class', Hoult began receiving leading man roles in such movies as 'Warm Bodies' (2013) and 'Jack the Giant Slayer' (2013). For a lighthearted movie aimed towards the teen market, Warm Bodies did acceptable on the box office with a worldwide gross of $116 million and a budget of $35 million. Whereas 'Jack the Giant Slayer' which was on a big budget certainly didn't do well on the box office, definitely gaining its way onto a list of the biggest flops of 2013 with a worldwide gross of $197 million and a hefty budget of $195 million.

Even with the flop known as 'Jack the Giant Slayer' (2013), it still seems that Hoult is on route as a rising Hollywood star. Although it does seem that Hoult will need to redeem himself as a worthwhile investment for producers to gain way back into big budget movies. With the recent release of 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', Hoult is back in the spot light and has a good few movies in the pipeline set for release in 2014 and 2015 including another X-Men movie (called 'X-Men: Apocalypse', 2016).

Gabriella Wilde
Gabriella Wilde | Source

#9- Gabriella Wilde

Gabriella Wilde has starred in few Hollywood movies but all of them so far have been good, which is a start with her role in the movies being fairly important within the stories. Wilde debuted in her first movie back in 2009 called 'St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold' which had a good reception, which made £12.5 million in the UK alone.

Two years later in 2011, Wilde gained a new role as Constance in the remake of a classic called 'The Three Musketeers'. 'The Three Musketeers' (2011) faired well in the box office making a respectable worldwide gross of $132 million with a $75 million budget. Finally two years later Wilde landed her best role so far playing the role of Sue Snell in the horror remake of 'Carrie' which was released in 2013. Wilde had a descent role in the Carrie movie which allowed us to see her in a new light, stretching her abilities as an actress, making audiences root for her character which can prove difficult for an inexperienced actor/actress. Although Wilde did well in her performance which is similar to how 'Carrie' (2013) did at the box office making a worldwide gross of $84 million with a $30 million budget which isn't bad, especially for a horror movie.

Wilde's latest movie is 'Endless Love' (2014), with her character being Jade Butterfield who falls in love with a charismatic boy who both have the desire to be with one another but their parents are set on keeping them apart. The rest is fairly predictable! 'Endless Love' (2014) has not done greatly on the box office with a worldwide gross, which is a mere $34 million with a $20 million budget. On the other hand, the plus side for Wilde is that the movie enabled her to play the leading lady which allowed her to show audiences that she can fare well in a romance/drama movie.

It is not easy to predict the future for Wilde but I am sure she will gain new and exciting roles which will bring her into the spot light once more within the big titles. However this will not be easy for the young actress if she takes too many roles in movies which do not receive a good reception at the box office, as the demand for her in movies will only decrease.

Dianna Agron
Dianna Agron | Source

#10- Dianna Agron

Dianna Agron has been an actress since 2006 when she debuted in Talkers Are No Good Doers (movie), however it wasn't until later on that she managed to crack her way into big Hollywood titles. Agron has guest stared in some TV Series over the years before making it into Hollywood movies which includes; CSI: New York (2006), Drake and Josh (2006) and Shark (2006). As well as starring in some bigger roles within TV Series over the years which includes; Veronica Mars (2006-2007), Heroes (2007) and Glee (2009-2014).

In 2010 Agron got a role in Burlesque which had a passable result at the box office making a worldwide gross of $89 million with a $55 million budget. Then in 2011 Agron gained a bigger role in I Am Number Four which had a worldwide gross of $149 million with a $60 million budget. Finally in 2013 receiving another leading role in The Family (starring alongside Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer) which made a worldwide gross of $68 million with a $30 million budget.

It should be interesting to see where Agron will appear next as she stars in what may only be good, if not great movies in the future. So far Agron has proved that she can act, now becoming a face people will recognise which leaves the final step of getting audiences to remember her name. The only way audiences will remember her name is like the others in this list, which is to get in countless memorable, great movies with their names up in lights.

In conclusion as you can see in the list, it is never easy for actors/actresses to cut it in Hollywood by simply stepping into a reasonably budgeted movie as even big budget movies can flop. These 10 actors/actresses are not the only rising Hollywood stars but they are certainly some of the prominent ones at the moment. So far each of the stars on this list have become known face wise as audiences including yourselves will most likely have recognised their faces even if you did not know their names. Remembering an actor/actresses name takes real stardom in Hollywood, making way into the A-Listers as everyone knows the names of the Hollywood A-Listers but as for other actors/actresses, it can be a struggle. This is why new coming actors/actresses who are just starting out in Hollywood, like those on this list must make their way into award winning movies as that is the quickest route to the Hollywood A-List.

If there were any actors/actresses which you were surprised not to see on the list then please leave their names in the comments box below. It is always interesting to hear others thoughts, so even if it is just an opinion about something which you have read in this list then again, do not hesitate to leave a comment in the box below. Thank you!
