Collecting Movie Steelbooks
Nowadays, we can find art in many different places under many different aspects. If I were to say what the word ''art'' means, I would say that it is anything that makes you feel alive in a way you don't feel very often; in a way where you stay astonished even moments after having seen that piece art. This would be MY meaning of art as I am sure many people relate to art in a different way.
Should anything be considered art? I don't know if anyone has seen that Simpsons episode where Homer Simpson tries to build a shed and he ends up with that weird sculpture. He then becomes famous for his art and everything. For what I know, I thought that what he did was terrible and hideous. But, of course, that episode portrayed in a humorous way that art has different forms.
For those of you who are not familiar with the term ''steelbook'', a steelbook is a casing in steel (of course) for either a DVD or a blu-ray movie. In other words they replace those blue cases. This short video below will give you a good idea of what a steelbook is.
As for me, I am a collector of steelbooks. I have around 30 steelbooks. Not a big collector since I know some people who have over 100 steelbooks. Some of them are not that expensive but some can go for as much as 400$ on ebay. The reason why they sell for that much is because they are extremely rare. Here is a list of the 5 nicest steelbooks that are out there in my opinion.
1. Iron Man (Canadian version)
This steelbook is one of
the most coveted. It is such a beauty and this, my friends, is what I
call a piece of art. The cover of the steelbook is simple, with nice
colors and the title is embossed. What else can you ask for? The pictures talk for themselves.
2. John Rambo
This is one of the first steelbooks to ever come out on blu-ray and it's in my opinion one of the best looking. The cover is stunning with bright white and the contrast with Rambo is crisp. I wish i had this one in my collection but I don't and it's one of the rare ones, or if you prefer a ''Holy Grail''. It amazes me how they managed to make the blood on the arm so bright. Also, this is a great movie I really enjoyed it. The title's contrast with the background adds to the beauty of it.
3. The Hurt Locker
This is one of my favorites. The cover is color cream with a glossy effect. Pictures don't do justice to this steelbook. It's simply a beauty. The only thing missing is the title embossed. If the title was embossed I would classify it as the nicest steelbook of all. The cover is simple and it captures a thrilling scene of the movie. Well done!
4.The Book of Eli
Great movie and great steelbook. The art on it is a bit shady with a tone of grey, just like the colors in the movie. It captures the essence of the movie and that's what I like about this one. Not too much stuff on the front cover, only Denzel, and on the back you can see an apocalyptic view of the movie. The cover has also a a cool finish kind of like frosty. And for the fans of Mila Kunis, there's a pic of her inside the steelbook. Marvelous!!
5. District 9 tied with Inglourious Basterds
I simply can't decide which one to take out of the list so I decided to put a tie. These two are just splendid. Inglourious Basterds cover is embossed, beautiful color and with the logo of the Basterds. What else can you ask for on a steelbook? Then comes District 9. It's one of my favorite movies and the cover is really beautiful. It would have been cool to put the robot on the front cover put this one is good looking this way also.
So I hope you enjoyed my hub about steelbooks. I am not the best person to describe the art and graphics of something and I hope you understood what I meant in my descriptions. If there are any collectors out there come and share your thoughts on my top 5! Art has various ways to show itself and I hope I showed you how beautiful a movie case can look.
