Top 50 A-List Actors of all Time!
Hollywood Actors/Actresses A-List
This is a list of the ''top 50 Hollywood actors/actresses A-List of all time''. I must state that although I have called this list ending with ''of all time!'', most of the actors/actresses on this list are from the modern day world of Hollywood. Not to say however that you will not find a few big time actors/actresses from the past as I tried to vary the timings slightly from those big in Hollywood today and those big some time ago.
For those wondering, ''what is an A-Lister?''. Well we believe that a Hollywood actor/actress A-Lister is a star with a combination of box office numbers and a subjective assessment, looking at their quality of performances as an actor.
When thinking of A-Listers, you must ask yourself a few questions!
- Is the star likeable?
- Is the star critically respected?
- Are their performances as an actor enjoyable and believable?
There must be a combination of all of these in order for the actor/actress to get into an A-List otherwise they are simply not good enough to be classified in this list.
When reading this list, there are bound to be a lot of actors/actresses in which you are surprised to not see on the list, in which case if you notice any actors/actresses you were expecting to see on the list which aren't there then leave their names in the comments box. Enjoy!
Top 50 A-List Actors
#1- Robert De Niro
There is no doubt that Robert De Niro is a worthy A-Lister with a whole mile long stretch of great movies to prove this to be so. Robert is a smooth talking gangster in movies such as 'Goodfellas' and 'The Godfather' as well as your funny not so every day family man in 'Meet the parents' and 'Meet the Fockers'.
Whether Robert is making audiences happy with laughter or tense with surprise, he is certainly a talented actor, whom we can all say we have seen in the movies. There was no doubt in our minds that Robert had to be number 1 on this list.
#2- Jack Nicholson
Although Jack Nicholson isn't seen in movies quite as much any more as he used to be, he has certainly made an impression in Hollywood not too long ago. For that reason he has made it as number 2 on this list and quite rightly so I'd say.
Jack has some great Hollywood titles under his belt including; 'The Shining', 'Batman' (played the Joker) and 'The Departed' which were all great movies. Here we have a soft spot for Jack as he has not only gained some timeless roles in the past including ''The Joker'' and ''Jack Torrance'' in 'The Shining', but also a wide array of brilliant movies from the past.
We all know Jack Nicholson which is why he has made it as number 2 on the list which isn't bad at all.
#3- Al Pacino
Al Pacino has shocked Hollywood in the past playing the perfect gangster in movies like 'The Godfather Part 2' and 'Scarface'. Personally these days, when I think of Al Pacino I tend to think of the 'Scarface' movie as it was such a great movie, even for today's standards.
Pacino is continually beating expectations in the movies adapting to roles as gangsters and detectives. No one in Hollywood plays the role as the detective in crime thrillers better than Pacino as he has shown that he can adapt to roles on both sides of the law with complete success.
Al Pacino, for these reasons has gained a spot as a worthy number 3 on this list.
#4- Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood has been an actor since the 1950s and he has always brought a great performance every time which has helped to form some of the biggest classics in Hollywood history. To name a few include; 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', 'Kelly's Heroes' and 'Dirty Harry'.
Clint Eastwood's great work done in Hollywood has not gone unseen, gaining him a spot as number 4 on this list.
#5- Daniel Day-Lewis
Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the best performing actors in Hollywood to date, bringing Oscar worthy performances every time. This is only proved by the fact that Day-Lewis has received 3 Oscars already, with no surprise if the future only leaves Day-Lewis attaining further Oscars.
Day-Lewis is a likeable actor with a lot of loyal fans who respect and in turn love the work which he has done so far, that including myself. A few great movies starring Day-Lewis from over the years include; 'Gangs of New York', 'There Will be Blood' and Lincoln (2012).
Day-Lewis's talent as an actor is Oscar worthy which is why he is number 5 on this list as I'm sure we can all agree, is a wise decision.
#6- Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson has starred in more memorable movies than I can care to think off. Including a few favourites which are; Braveheart, The Patriot and Signs. I'm sure it comes as no surprise to see the man who can be named by almost everyone above the age of 18 due to his accomplished career as an actor so high on this list.
#7- Robin Williams
Robin Williams is one of the funniest actors in Hollywood, even today when comedies are more popular than they have ever been before with so many comedic actors. Robin is not only known for his ability to make audiences laugh but also in making them cry due to his flawless performances as an actor. This of course referring to his role as ''Sean Maguire'' in the brilliant movie called 'Good Will Hunting'', whereby he played a serious role.
Like most I enjoy Robin mainly as a comedic actor as he has the ability to make just about everyone laugh in the movies he has the joy of starring in. Some of the great movies he has starred in include; 'Mrs. Doubtfire', 'Jumanji' and 'Flubber'.
As a person, Robin Williams is likeable but as an actor, Robin Williams is the funniest man on the planet which has earn't him a spot on the list as number 7.
#8- Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks has a way with audiences, playing in some of the most entertaining movies. I don't think anyone has played some a varied set of characters ever before in such a way that we can't help but fall in love with the movie after a single viewing. No actor in Hollywood has had an effect on people quite as much as Tom Hanks has through the characters he has played in movies.
Hanks is funny, serious, unthinkably likeable as an actor and allows viewers the easy choice of deciding which movie to watch in the evening. Which without a doubt would be one starring Tom Hanks as you know, you can't go wrong with a movie starring Hanks.
#9- Dustin Hoffman
At some point or another, we have all seen a Dustin Hoffman movie and every time we see one of his movies it is always enjoyable. As an actor Hoffman is likeable with his roles almost always touching on his very likeability. Dustin is able to play some tricky characters which other actors would struggle to do perfectly but Dustin does it, making it all look easy.
Dustin is a funny actor but also able to turn to more serious roles if demanded. Over his long career so far as an actor Dustin has played some great roles and proved to the world that he is an actor we must except as a Hollywood star.
#10- Leonardo Dicaprio
Ever since Leonardo Dicaprio played the starring role in 'Titanic', he has been a Hollywood A-Lister and he hasn't lost his place yet upon this list as every movie he stars in is just is good as the one he'd starred in previously. It is rare in Hollywood, to find an actor as talented as Leonardo which is why directors and producers are always looking to use Leonardo in their movies. If there is a big budget movie and the production company wants a safety net, then quite clearly Leonardo is the man for the job.
It is unquestionable that Leonardo should gain the spot as number 10 on this list.
#11- Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp is a talented actor with so much potential even now, having starred in countless great movies as there is still so much that Hollywood can offer for Johnny. With the ability to adapt from family movies, to comedy, thrillers and dramas comes the ability to become an instant great actor, beloved by many. Johnny is one of these actors and almost everyone would put Johnny Depp on their list for the 'top 10 best actors of all time!' and for good reason.
Johnny Depp is one of the most liked actors in Hollywood at the moment due to his starring role as ''Jack Sparrow'' in the family friendly 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. This is why Johnny has made it on this list as number 11.
#12- Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford has offered so much through his acting for audiences as we all remember the 'Indiana Jones' movies which were timeless in their making. Not forgetting that Harrison Ford also starred in the original Star Wars trilogy which Sci-Fi fans truly loved.
However Harrison Ford should not be looked upon for these two movie franchises alone, as he has also starred in many other brilliant movies. Just a few others includes; 'Blade Runner', 'Patriot Games' and 'Air Force One'.
Harrison Ford is a serious actor who takes rather serious roles except they do usually have a sense of quirkiness about them. I believe Harrison Ford is a brilliant actor and since his arrival in big blockbuster movies, apparently so do others around the world. Making it easy to see why de deserves to make it onto the top 100 A-Listers of all time. With a respectable ranking at number 12, now that seems fair considering his status in Hollywood.
#13- Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves has for a long time been seen as a suitable candidate for the big budget movies and you can see why when you look at his track record as an actor. Keanu has starred in some brilliant movies which did well in the box office including; 'Point Break', 'Speed' and 'The Matrix'.
Even though 2013 wasn't Keanu's best year with his standing in the box office due to the catastrophic disaster with the movie which had promise called '47 Ronin'. However I feel it is worth letting Keanu off for this one as the cause of the movies disaster which not due to the performance given by himself but rather multiple issues which had nothing to do with Keanu.
Without further ado we announce that Keanu Reeves receives a well deserved place at number 13 on this list.
#14- Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise is well respected among Hollywood due to chaotic acting career so far which hit off when he starred in 'Top Gun' which showed that he had talent which was worth recognising. After 'Top Gun' Cruise went on to star in other great movies including such movies as 'Mission Impossible', The Last Samurai' and 'Jack Reacher' which were all enjoyable movies with serious potential in the box office.
Cruise is a star liked among woman and men alike as there is something for everyone in most of Cruises movies with the shoot outs, explosions and car chases for the men and a love twist for the woman. Not to say that Cruise is just a man of action as he has shown that he can adapt as an actor to other areas of acting including; dramas as proved with such movies as 'The Firm' and 'Jerry Maguire' and comedies as proved in such movies as 'Tropic Thunder' and 'Knight and Day'.
This all earning Cruise the right to gain a place on this list at a respectable number 14.
#15- Gene Hackman
Gene Hackman has bin around in the acting business since the 1960s, gaining roles in some of the greatest movies. Some of these great movies include; 'The French Connection', 'Unforgiven' and 'Enemy of the State'.
Gene was great in the movies when he first started out in Hollywood and he is still just as great now starring in mostly serious movies but at times not so serious movies. I still remember Gene in the comedy movie called 'Get Shorty' which showed Gene playing a funny role which I though was brilliant as gene played the part really well.
Gene gets a well deserved place on the list at number 15.
#16- Morgan Freeman
Morgan Freeman who is best known for his voice has starred alongside many great actors throughout his long career as an actor. However this isn't to say that Morgan isn't himself a great actor as he consistently performs at a high level throughout his starring roles in movies.
Morgan is one of the best known faces, voices and names in Hollywood which is all down to his talent as an actor constantly bringing great performances in movies. This all earns Morgan a place as number 16 on the list.
#17- Anthony Hopkins
Anthony Hopkins is still best known today for his role as ''Dr. Hannibal Lecter'' in 'Silence of the Lambs', 'Hannibal' and 'Red Dragon' which were all seamlessly great movies. Anthony Hopkins has always played a particularly important role in movies as a serious man with high intelligence, which seems rightly so considering how well he played the role as ''Hannibal Lecter''.
Anthony, even today pops up in great movies, always performing his roles superbly which is why he has received a place on the list as number 17.
#18- Russell Crowe
Russell Crowe first appeared as an A-Lister when the Gladiator movie was released which was an instant success with audiences. Since Gladiator, Russell has worked hard playing some great roles in great movies which includes; 'A Beautiful Mind', 'Robin Hood' and 'Man of Steel'.
Russell is a brilliant actor with movies we all appreciate which has earned him a place at number 18 on the list.
#19- Joaquin Phoenix
Joaquin Phoenix offers award winning performances with 3 Oscar nominations but zero Oscar wins, now I believe that is a crime. Joaquin is a brilliant actor with a lot of potential even now as his career as an actor is at an all time high. Such great movies starring Joaquin includes; 'Gladiator', 'Signs' and 'Her' which shone due to the added performance from Joaquin.
Joaquin has not ceased to surprise us in Hollywood so far, which is why he has earned a high ranking on this list at number 19.
#20- Bill Murray
Bill Murray is a surprisingly great actor who somewhat seems like your run of the mill actor but also stands out from the crowd due to his personality and unique qualities. Bill is still best known from his role in 'Ghost Busters', however his talents were not restricted as he branched out into some other great movies which includes; 'Groundhog Day', 'Lost in Translation' and 'Garfield' (voice of Garfield).
I feel his great efforts as an actor and his unique personality deserves him the spot at number 20 on the list.
#21- Sean Connery
Sean Connery is best known for his role as 'James Bond' but he has played in some great movie over the years. A few of the movies Sean has played in include; 'Dr. No', 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' and 'The Hunt for Red October'.
Sean Connery is a legend in Hollywood and certainly deserves the lucky number 21 spot on this list.

Angelina Jolie (best known for her marriage with 'Brad Pitt') is a stylish actress who has starred in some great movies. In 2013 alone Angelina Jolie's earnings were reported at a whopping $33 million which made her the top Hollywood earning actress in 2013.
A few noteworthy movies Angelina Jolie has starred in include; 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider', 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' and 'Salt'. An intriguing actress to say the least with a great career so far in the acting business and still holds a promising career as proven by the amount Angelina is currently earning.
A stylish 22 spot earned for the high earning actress who seems to shock audiences everywhere with her breathtaking performances.
#23- Tommy Le Jones
Tommy Lee Jones is not necessarily an actor we see much of these days in the movies but he is still a worthy actor, having starred in some of the best movies from the past. Not to say that it is unheard of to find Tommy in today's more successful movies as he has stared in a few greats including; 'No Country for Old Men' (2007), Men in Black 3 (2012) and Lincoln (2012). All of which movies went on to do well at the box office which isn't any surprise considering Tommy is known for his luck at the box office.
Younger audiences may not know much about Tommy Lee Jones other than for the fact that he was that guy who stared alongside Will Smith in the 'Men in Black' series. Well Tommy has been starring in movies since 1970 making him a veteran in Hollywood, having received more than 40 years of experience in the acting business. Among Tommy's time as an actor he has starred in some greats including a few earlier movies than already mentioned; JFK (1991), The Fugitive (1993) and Batman Forever (1995).
It is easy to dismiss Tommy from this list but it is our belief that he deserves a well respected number 23 position on the list of the best A-List actors.
#24- Matt Damon
Matt Damon is currently a hot shot in Hollywood receiving more attention than most for his talents as an actor. Matt Damon is simply out to prove to the world that he can play any and all varieties of roles from the psychologically tormented genius in 'Good Will Hunting' (1997), the WWII soldier in 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998) and the CIA super spy in 'The Bourne' series. Everyone who has ever had the opportunity to watch a Matt Damon movie would agree that he has an admirable presence on screen with a delightfully brilliant performance to back up the presence.
It is certainly easy to say that Matt Damon is one actor you can bank on bringing in the money when releasing the potentially next big box office hit. All we can say at this point is ''keep up the great work Mr Damon''.

Due to his long lasting career, even now gaining roles which we will all recognise in some of our favourite films and TV series, I feel he has deserved the spot as number 25 on this list.
#26- Will Smith
Will Smith quickly rose to the A-List after his roles in the popular films; 'Bad Boys' (1995), 'Independence Day' (1996) and 'Men in Black' (1997). Outrageously funny! A well earned spot at number 45.
#46- Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage went from being a credible, amazing A-list actor with huge potential to now being that guy in the terrible films (on occasion, good films) which is a shame as the films Nicolas Cage starred in during the 90's were great. This was prompted when the IRS came after Nicolas Cage for millions in back taxes, unable to sell one of his homes, he was forced into taking any role in films that he could get. Not so lucky for Nicolas Cage as a lot of these films were terrible, not necessarily Nicolas cages fault but then again this is why it is always worth paying your taxes. Nicolas Cages noteworthy films include 'The Rock' (1996), 'Face/Off' (1997), 'Gone in Sixty Seconds' (2000) and 'National Treasure' (2004).
Great actor, however plenty of bad films! Still he receives a well earned spot at number 46.
