Updated on October 16, 2016

Khizar hasen is a freelance writer with extreme love for movies, games and music. He's currently an undergraduate engineering student.

Can't believe four months later 2016 is going to end. This year has been a little unconventional compared to past few years in movies. This summer season saw a large number of underperformers and flops, audience mostly rejected sequels and remakes. But pre-summer season gave us couple of unexpected blockbusters like Deadpool, kung fu panda 3 and Zootopia.

All and all, 2016 has been an extremely unpredictable year as far as financial and critical performance of movies are concerned. Perhaps it will continue to be like this till the end. But we've conducted a list to acknowledge movies that have potential to be either critically successful or commercially.

20. The Light Between Oceans

A period drama set in Australia of post world war I era, and follows a war veteran and his wife. They adopt a girl whom they found and rescued, but soon realize the hardships faced while raising a child.

It seems to be another masterpiece coming out of director Derek Cianfrance's mind after delivering films like "blue Valentine" and "place beyond the pines". His previous work was excellent and explored personal relationships in possibly most realistic way. Michael Fassbander and Alicia vikander are in lead to play husband and wife. It would be moody, slow paced and visually stunning, similar to the other work of Derek

19. Sing

An animated musical comedy from the illumination studios, who brought us Despicable me series and minions. It's set in the world of anthromorphic animals, similar to Zootopia, but premise is quite different than that.

While I'm genuinely not expecting this movie to be as good as zootopia, but i can put my chips that it wouldn't be a bad film. It would be much better than the most movies that we have seen this summer.

18. Collateral Beauty

This movie is on this list for its solid cast that includes Will Smith, Kate Winslet and Edward Norton. It's basically a surreal comedy drama set in new York, while expectations isn't high for this one, but it could surprise us all. That's the beauty of this kind of film, people don't expect much from them but end up surprising us all.

17. The Accountant

After giving an impressive performance as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Ben Affleck is coming back as a mathematician with guns in hands to showcase his even more polished acting skills. But other than Ben Affleck, it does have some other good actors such as Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons. I'm positive on this film to one of the best of the year, if Ben Affleck have signed this film, then it must have something special.

16. Snowden

It's a biographical drama telling the story of Edward Joseph Snowden, a geeky American professional who leaked some classified information from national security agency to The Guardian.

It looks it's gonna earn some Oscars nominations. With a talented cast like Joseph Gordon, Shaliene Woodley and Scott Eastwood, this film is worth considering to watch in coming days.

15. Heckshaw Ridge

Another masterpiece coming from the factory of Mel Gibson, after making Movies like "passion of the Christ" and "apoclypto". He's coming back with a movie with eye pleasing visuals and more than satisfying acting. Although he hasn't made any film in past 10 years, but he's one of the best director working today. While it has Andrew Garfield in the lead, judging from the trailer, he seems to be doing pretty good job too.

14. The Girl On Train

This mystery thriller drama is based on the novel with the same name, with an extremely talented actress Emily Blunt playing Rachel Watson (the protagonist of the film). Although I've not read the novel myself, but it must be good because studio didn't spend much time deciding to adapt it for a film (Novel debuted only a year ago). Emily Blunt has never been disappointing in any movie she appeared, in fact she has nailed down all of her roles in past few years, especially in "Edge of tomorrow" and "Sicario". She is talented, beautiful and intelligent. Sign me up only for her.

13. Passengers

Passenger is a high budget science fiction thriller with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence in lead roles. Plot is set in an starship which is on a 120 years long journey to another wold, and carrying more than 5000 thousands people in their sleep chambers. Two people awake while ship is still 90 years away from the destination. The premise is definitely unique.

12. Deepwater Horizon

Based on the true story of deepwater horizon explosion and oil spill in the gulf of Mexico, more than $100 million production budget, Mark Wahlberg in lead and Peter berg as director, this movie sounds somewhat promising.

I'm really hoping for this movie to be good, while this year's "finest hour" was a fine movie, but it failed to capture emotional depth of the true event, but probably "deepwater horizon" would do. Peter Berg is a great director who has given us an excellent movie "Lone Survivor" based on real life tragedy, Mark was the protagonist in that film too, and quite honestly his collaboration with Peter Berg worked pretty well. Perhaps this movie would also be as good as Lone Survivor. But it could be more similar to 2012's Battleship which was also directed by Peter Berg.

11. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

The sequel of 2012's movie "Jack Reacher" starring Tom Cruise as the title character. Honestly first movie was quite decent, but far from a masterpiece. However, most people enjoyed the thrills and action element in that film, including me. Never Go Back is set four years after the events of the first movie, and Jack reacher has been accused of an 16 years old homicide. but soon realises that things are much bigger than he previously thought.

I'm not expecting much from this, if it could manage to be enjoyable as the first one, it should be considered as an achievement.

10. Assassin's Creed Movie

Warcraft has proved that gamers are loyal fans, even though "Warcraft" has been considered critical and commercial disappointment but it broke many box office records in China, the country with highest number of Warcraft player.

There might never be a great game based movie, but Assassin's creed movie seems to be different, it has got an original story and character, not to mention Michael Fassbender is in lead. And last but not the least, there are millions of Assassin's creed fans that are not just in china so, we can expect this one to be financially successful at least.

9. Sully

No, it's not about Pixar's character from monster university, instead it's a biographical drama with Tom Hanks in lead and Oscar winning director Clint Eastwood onboard.

Sully is based on the novel called Highest Duty, detailing an aircraft accident carrying 155 passengers, but Sully (the pilot) successfully ditches the plane on Hudson River saving entire crew and passengers.

While I'm pretty much positive on this to be a good movie, but only problem is its running time of 95 minutes, which seems too short to get much attention in Oscars.

8. Moana

After the critical and commercial success of Frozen, big hero 6 and Zootopia Disney is heading to deliver another crowd pleasing animation movie named Moana.

Judging from the trailer the film looks visually stunning, eye pleasing CGI along with beautiful score is going to drag a large number of people to theatres. This year people are also enjoying family friendly animated movies more than any other, 3 to 4 animated movies are already among top 10 highest grossing. Moana will definitely make its place in top ten, if not in five.

7. The Founder

This biographical film is exploring acquisition of McDonald by Ray Kroc played by Michael Keaton. Michael Keaton is very lucky for Oscar season, last two years of Best Picture Oscar winners starred Michael in lead. While it looks different from those movies, but who knows? it could be the winner for 2016 Best Picture.

6. The Magnificent Seven

The remake of 1960 old west which itself was a remake of 1954's Japanese film "seven samurai", sounds kinda boring, but watch the trailer, i bet you'll be impressed. It has got a solid cast like Danzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke in lead. But so far in this decade old west movies have been quite impressive, such as Django unchained, slow west, true grit and the hateful eight, all were pretty amazing, fun to watch and made a lot of people fall in love with the genre.

5. La La Land

With an extremely talented cast in lead including Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and J.K. Simmons, seems it's going to be a critics Darling. This musical romantic drama is an interesting offering from the director of "Whiplash" Damien Chazelle. The film will explore a relationship between a jazz musician and a film actress. As they struggle to maintain their relationship without scarifying their dreams.

4. Star Wars: Rogue One

It's the first time ever that an "Star Wars" movie coming out which is not the part of any trilogy. Rogue one is set before the original star wars movie came in 1977. While it doesn't seem to be a smart move, but we shouldn't underestimate the "star wars" fan following. If it managed to get positive reviews from critics, then nobody can stop this movie to become a mega blockbuster hit like last year's The force awakens.

3. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Almost five years after the deathly hallows a movie is coming out set in the same universe as Harry Potter franchise. It's easy to tell that this one will be loved by both critics and audiences. It's a prequel to Harry Potter series, and New York of 1920s makes a quite distinctive setting on its own. But other than that it has Oscar winning Actor in the lead. Undoubtedly Fantastic beasts is heading to be one of year's best and most successful.

2. Doctor Strange

Doctor strange seems to be one of the most innovated movie ever created with a Marvel character. Although the trailer looks visually stunning, but i guess this movie will have a little different and darker tone than previous movies in MCU. Marvel is finally bringing more and more magic in their cinematic universe.

Undoubtedly Doctor strange would earn several hundred millions at the box office, and considering track record of marvel movies it would easily get between 80 to 100% rating from critics on Rotton Tomatoes.

1. Silence

Silence is a passion project of Martin Scorsese, he wanted to work on this project several years before, that should count as an enough reason to be the most anticipated movie of the year.

The best part about him is that he has made one masterpiece in every decade of his career, i believe this one would be his masterpiece for this decade. The premise look promising enough to earn dozens of Oscar nominations or perhaps several wins.

One last thing, don't forget to share the list if you liked it. And what do you think about these movies, which one would be disappointing or would end up being great? whatever you think comment below, let me know.
