Top 3 Best Japanese Drama (jdrama) Series
Japanese dramas are definitely a nice change from English speaking dramas. When you're sick of watching the 5 versions of CSI or 29 versions of Law and Order and whatever other crime shows (which is the majority of what's on TV) try something different!
This is a list of my favourite Japanese drama (or Jdrama) television shows.
1 Litre of Tears
1 Litre of Tears (1 Litre no Namida) This TV Jdrama is based on the true story from the diary entries of Aya, a 15 year old girl who develops the progressive and degenerative disease spinocerebellar degeneration. The disease gradually causes her to lose most of her ability to move normally and eventually not at all.
Aya is forced to give up all the activities she loves such as basketball, but she never gave up on her diary writing.
While Aya becomes more and more of a burden on her classmates, which makes her feel very guilty, Aya struggles to let go of her last grasp of a normal 15 year old’s life. A love story is thrown in for good measure.
Overall it is an excellent drama, great acting, very sad but with many memorable quotes also make it very inspirational.
‘I really don't want to say things such as ''I want to go back to how things were before.'' I recognize how I am right now, and I will continue to live on.’
Warning: your tears and Aya’s will flow throughout.
1 Litre of Tears
Lesser recognised and under appreciated Jdrama series based on the manga of the same name. LIFE shows the darker side of high school and focuses on severe bullying in an exclusive high school of Ayumu committed by her former friend Manami Anzai.
Manami is able to dominate the classroom through her evil tactics and also her wealthy and powerful father, however Ayumu refuses to be give in to bullying even though the majority of the class has been turned against her.
The drama is excellently directed with an exciting storyline with never a dull moment.
Issues covered are relevant to all schools today, it highlights how those who are bullied can go unnoticed. This Jdrama is not for children and I think would be distressing to people under 16.
Hana Yori Dango
At times I found Hana Yori Dango to be a milder version of LIFE ライフ and most other times to be a comedy drama. It is about Makino, a poor girl who attends a high school for the extremely rich through the sacrifices of the rest of her family. The school is controlled by the 4 richest of the rich boys, known as F4. Anyone who wrongs them in the slightest way will receive a 'red card' that signals the rest of the school to bully that person.
Makino becomes the only person to ever stand up to them and as such a love triangle develops between her and 2 of the F4 boys.
Hana Yori Dango also has 2 seasons and also a Korean drama version.
I enjoyed this Jdrama, it's number 3 spot on my list but is number 1 spot on many other peoples lists! It is a much more lighthearted drama compared to 1 Litre of Tears and LIFE. It is for entertainment value but has little of the issues present in the other two dramas.
