So, this is the top 5 emotionally strong female anime characters. Nope, strong in this article doesn’t mean who can beat people the most. I’m talking about the other kind of strong, you see. The word doesn’t always have to be associated with physical power.

I’m talking about who a character who is her own person even though she is not the main character. I’m talking about a character that’s independent and have lives outside of the MC. The characters that have everything together instead of crumbling apart. A character that is independent and have her own personal struggles, interests, etc. In short, she is real.

Perhaps, you often see characters that are too clingy and can’t live without her love interest. A character that seems to live for the MC. Even if she can fight, she’s not a strong character. Femininity can be strong too! A strong character doesn’t necessarily have to be able to fight.

Another thing is female in anime is often used for fan service. They are over sexualized, perhaps to attract more views. They need to be constantly saved by males. But don’t worry. Not every character is like that.

Let’s take a look at the list!

Erza Scarlet
Erza Scarlet

1. Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail

Erza scarlet is a character from Fairy Tail! She is an S-class mage and is described to have strong physical power. Her comrades are often afraid of her. But they know that she is very caring. She might act scary and impatient at times but she is actually cares a lot about the others! She will go to great lengths to save her friends. She has own personal fears and struggles as well. For example, she is said to feel insecure if she’s not wearing her armor. Later on, she is able to break free from her fear. Having a tragic childhood, she is not able to protect those who are dear to her. It’s the reason why she’s strong. She wants to protect those she held dear to her. She continues to grow as a person through her hardships. She has long scarlet hair, hence the reason her name is scarlet with brown eyes. Her nickname is Titania. Why? Because she is the strongest female character in Fairy Tail. Titania is the queen of fairies from Shakespeare’s play, Midsummer Night’s Dream. What do you think of her? Is she strong in your opinion?

Bishamon

2. Bishamonten from Noragami

Also known as Vaisravana, she is one of the deadliest God wars in Noragami. Noragami is an anime revolving Japanese Gods. Sure, she has strong physical power but that’s not the only reason why she is in my top 10. While her manner might be scary, she is not as scary as she looks. She is compassionate in fact. She cares a lot about her Shinki. Every time she sees a wandering soul, she always takes him/her in. Just for your information, having lots of Shinki might put God’s life at risk. But Bishamon has around +100 Shinki. She cares a lot about each of them as well. She also has painful past and through certain events, she is able to confront her own past. She grows into a better person. There are sweet sides of her as well. Her nickname is Veena, given by her Shinki, Kazuma. I personally think they are very cute together. She is wise and she has a strong sense of justice. She is not afraid to defend the right thing, even if it means going against the heaven. This is what I call a strong character!

Touka Kirishima as a ghoul

3. Touka Kirishima from Tokyo Ghoul

Touka Kirishima is a female character from Tokyo Ghoul. Yes, she is the main character, Kaneki Ken’s love interest. But that doesn’t mean her lives revolve around him all the time. She might seem stronger in the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul because there’s more fighting scene. A lot of people say Touka does nothing and is weak. Yes, she has less appearance in Tokyo Ghoul:re but that doesn’t make her character any less strong. Like I said above, a strong character doesn’t always have to go around, beating people. First of all, why’d I say she is strong? Look at the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul. She is not a damsel in distress character. She saves the main character several times. She is saved as well though so don’t take it the wrong way. I’m not implying that Kaneki Ken is weak. I’m saying that Touka is not a damsel-in-distress character. Secondly, she is able to have life outside of Kaneki Ken even though he left her. She goes to college, has her own coffee shop and whatnot. She doesn’t mope around and begs for him to come back. Yes, she does feel sad from time to time but that’s normal. She is not biased as well. Female characters tend to worship the males when they like a person. Touka Kirishima is able to see Kaneki’s flaws and love him all the while. She is not afraid to voice her opinion to him.

Moreover, Touka has a tragic childhood, betrayed by humans she thought she could trust. But she doesn’t generalize the whole human population as mean. She has been through great hardships and she manages to keep it going. That’s very admirable of her. As Touka grows older, she becomes wiser. Her character development is amazing.

Mikasa Ackerman
Mikasa Ackerman

4. Mikasa Ackerman from Attack onTitan

Mikasa Ackerman is one of the strongest female characters. She has been through quite the hardships. She is also considered one of the best soldiers. She has a cynical view of life, accepting the harsh reality that is life. Though she is considered as one of the best soldiers, she is not at all vain! Also, she cares a lot about her brother, Eren and is very protective of him. I think one of the qualities that make people strong is the desire to protect others.

Miyazono Kaori
Miyazono Kaori

5. Miyazono Kaori from Your Lie in April

To prove my point that I’m not only choosing those who are good at battle, here you go. Nope, I’m not choosing Miyazono Kaori only because of that reason. I genuinely thought she is a strong female anime character. Ah, well, in a way, she is a battling with her illness. To finally muster up the courage and do the things she has always wanted is a very brave thing to do. She is always seen smiling despite her fear. Though she crumbles at times. Well, I wouldn’t blame her. She must be afraid. But despite all, she decides to embrace life and be optimistic about it. She is not even scared going against the rules. She plays her music with emotion instead of letting people tell her what to do. She is always grateful for her life and that’s very admirable.

If you don’t agree with my list, it’s fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions after all. Instead, tell me your strong female anime character in the comment section down below!

Probably Mikasa is numb because she learned to hide her feelings? Or her feelings have gone numb because of all the things that happened. Haha, are you Eren then? Thanks for commenting!

Mikasa reminds me of how sister was 15 years ago. She seems very numb.
