Why do we love comic book movies?

Lets face it, we love superheroes. We love the fight between good and evil, and we definitely love when some good, innocent guy or a girl with an alter ego do this by using his or hers superpowers. Not to mention that every single one of us has fantasized about having superpowers. That is probably the reason why the movie directors are making more and more movies based on comic books. People love superheroes, people love action, special effects, impossible love stories that go with superheroes, so you just need a decent screenplay and success is guaranteed. These movies are very popular and often come in series. The comic book movie series that I am going to write about are: Superman, Batman, Spider-man, Iron man and the X-men.

The man of steel. We all know this guy, with the huge S across his chest. Superman comes from the planet Krypton. His home planet was destroyed by the giant quakes, and his parents placed him in a small rocket ship and sent him to Earth, where he was adopted by a Kansas farmer and his wife and raised as Clark Kent. He discovered his superpowers very early and decided to use them for the benefit of humanity. Clark became a news reporter.

Like any other superhero, Superman has his alter ego, a life, a job like any other human. Every superhero also has his arch enemy. In Superman's case the arch enemy is a human Lex Luthor and of course the girl he loves, Lois Lane. Very often, in superhero movies, the girl doesn't know who is the man under the superhero costume, and she usually falls in love with the superhero and not in the normal guy who is under the costume.

The Superman franchise contains five movies. The first one came out in 1978, and the last in 2006. The sixth movie is to be released in 2013. In the first four parts Supermen was played by the amazing Christopher Reeve (died in 2004, after he became a quadriplegic in 1995, after being trown from a horse). Lex Luthor was played by another great actor - Gene Hackman. After the fourth move was released in 1987. we waited nineteen years for the new film. This one was released, as I said, in 2006. This movie is a sequel to Superman one and two, ignoring the events in Superman three and four.

The sixth part is yet to be released in June 2013. I am sure that the fans of this superhero can't wait to see this movie.

Superman: The Man of Steel trailer

His name is Peter Parker, an orphan who is living with his uncle Ben and aunt May. During his visit to a science exhibit Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider. A day after, he started to discover his new abilities. Peter was able to climb walls, shoot a web from his wrists, he gained super strength etc. However, he is still that nerdy orphan as he was before. He finds a job as a photographer for the newspapers and he is barely able to pay his rent. Like any other superhero, Spider-Man also has a love of his life. Peter is in love with his neighbour, Mary Jane. Of course, Mary Jane is attracted to Spider-Man and not to a guy under the costume. Basically, he is a superhero with a lot of human real life problems.

The Spider-Man franchise has four movies. The first three: Spider-Man I, II and III ( from 2002, 2004, and 2007) were directed by Sam Raimi. Spider-Man was very well played by Tobey Maguire and Mary Jane was played by Kirsten Dunst. These are three very good movies with a lot of action and special effects. Very well received by critics and at the box offices. The fourth part which is named "The Amazing Spider-Man" was released this month, in July 2012. Although this movie is directed by another director, Marc Webb, and Spider-Man was played by another actor, Andrew Garfield, this is still a pretty good movie, worth watching.

One of my favorites. The X-Men are a group of superheroes whose genes mutated and they have various superpowers. These genes are called the X genes. Their leader and mentor is a professor, Charles Xavier, known as "Professor X". He created a school in his Westchester mansion in order to train young mutants to use their powers for the benefit of humanity.

Xavier gives his students names that are suitable for their superpowers. For example the girl who controls the weather is named "Storm", one who controls fire "Pyro", ice "Iceman" etc. Their arch enemy is also a mutant called Magneto. His human name is Eric Lehnsherr and he was a very good friend with Xavier but they became enemies due to their different human politics. Xavier claimed that mutants need to live side by side with humans, and that the humans will eventually accept that, but Eric disagreed. He thinks that the humans will never accept mutants, and that mutants are more advanced species and they need to rule. There are humans who are scared of mutants, and they want to imprison, kill or cure them.

There are five movies in this franchise. The first one came out in a year 2000, and the last one in 2011. The first three parts are about the rivalry between Magneto's team and the team under the leadership of Professor X. Whether they are fighting against each other, or together against humans, this rivalry is always present. Fourth part is about Wolverine, his past, his origins. Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) is a member of Xavier's X-Men and he doesn't remember some parts from his memory and he wants to discover them. Fifth part, released in 2011, named "First Class" is about young Magneto and young Professor X. How did their friendship started and why did they became rivals.

Iron Man

Maybe the richest comic book character. This guy has it all. His name is Tony Stark. He is a billionaire. Stark owns "Stark Industries", a company that manufactures weapons. However Stark's perfect life ended after he has been kidnapped by a terrorist organization, which forced him to create a weapon of mass destruction for them. During the kidnapping he suffers a severe chest injury; In order to live he needs to have a electric charger in his chests. However Tony uses his knowledge not to build a weapon of mass destruction for the terrorist, but to build a power suit which will help him to escape.

After escaping Stark used his money to upgrade this suit and to use it in good purposes. This is a superhero that doesn't have any supernatural abilities, just his money and his brain.

So far two movies have been made about Tony Stark. The first one in 2008, and the second in 2010. Robert Downey Jr. was brilliant as Iron Man. Both movies are really great, great script, great actors, full of action, funny, interesting. Two very very good movies. The third part is in production. It will be released in May 2013. and once again we will be able to enjoy in Robert's performance as Iron Man, and Gwyneth Paltrow as his adorable assistant.

Another billionaire. This character's name is Bruce Wayne. He is the leader of Wayne Enterprise which he inherited after the murder of his father and mother. Bruce witnessed this horrible event and since then he is afraid of bets. Because of that fear he decides to create his alter ego Batman and to use his fonds to became a fighter against crime. In Batman's fight against crime he faced various enemies: The Joker, Two Face, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Riddler etc.

There are numerous movies about this superhero. The first movie ever is from 1966. Later we have four movies from 1989. to 1997. In this period Batman was played by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.

However this recent movie series about Batman that were directed by Christopher Nolan are simply amazing. In my opinion, Nolan is the best director ever. Batman is played by a fantastic Christian Bale. This series contains three movies. In the first one "Batman Begins", we can see how did Bruce Wayne become batman, and why. At the end of this move we see how batman gets in possession of a joker card, which leads us into second movie, probably the best Batman movie ever made "The Dark Knight". Unlike the first Joker played by Jack Nicholson, this one, played by Heath Ledger is more insane, dark, dirty etc. and that makes him a worthy adversary. The third part released in 2012. turns back to the first one in the series. Nolan introduces us to Bane, an intelligent and very strong person, member of the League of Shadows (same as Batman), and he is in Gotham to finishRa's Al Ghul's mission.

My favorite comic book characters are the Fantastic Four. I'm so glad they made 2 movies about them. They should make more. They are grossly underrated.

Maybe I'll give it a try, but must say, I love a good villain.

Depends on what you like. It throws out any of the character depth that the 2004 one had, but ramps up the action and gore to insane levels. It doesn't take itself serious. It's a goofy roller coaster ride. The biggest downside is the villains. They went pretty silly with the villains.

Yeah I've heard for the Lundgren part, but not for the war zone. Is it any good?

Actually it's three movies. Punisher (2004) starring Thomas Jane, Punisher : War Zone (2008) starring Ray Stevenson, and then the underrated and less known, Punisher (1989) starring Dolph Lundgren.

Punisher is pretty cool, but it's just one movie, i think. These are the movies that contains two or more parts.

I'm gonna go with the Punisher. It's a comic book series without all the righteous causes. He doesn't even try to give criminals a fair trial. He just shoots them on the spot. The best action movies revolve around the Punisher and that's what the Punisher is based on.
