Number 36: Cable Guy
Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick) has had to move out of the flat he shared with girlfriend, Robin Harris (Leslie Mann) due to a marriage proposal that went wrong. The two are still on speaking terms, but the need for space is a required. For a time, be that short or long, who knows..
Upon moving into his own flat, Steven will of course, need the cable guy to visit and tune him up and turn him on.
After speaking to Rick (Jack Black), a pal from work about moving into his new place, Steven is told that if he offers the cable guy $100 he will most likely unlock a lot of channels for free. Steven seems worried but seems interested.
After a nearly missing the cable guy due to taking a shower, and after insentient door bell ringing and shouting, Steven finally lets him in .
The cable guy goes by the name Chip Douglas (Jim Carrey) and it is apparent from the start that he takes his job very seriously. He is a nice enough guy but perhaps he is not used to human contact and normal interactions.
After Steven gets a little perplexed, mildly worried, and then, a tad snappy, he tries pitifully to bribe Chip to unlock the channels. Chip instantly reacts in a very official way, demanding the details of the other cable guy who did this for his friend.
Of course, Chip is joking and he unlocks the channels bribe free.
As we all know, nothing is for free. When it comes to strangers of course.
After going out a few times, things seem to be going really well. It seems as though Steven and Chip could become friends after an odd first meeting.
Steven seems to also be making good progress with Robin and it seems as if they will be getting back together very soon. In the spirit of normality, Steven introduces Chip to Robin.
Soon though, things start to fray and Steven starts to see that Chip is not what he seems to be as he starts to enter into every aspect of Steven's life.
It is amazing what you can get from people, when you give them free cable..
