Top Anime Soundtracks (OSTs): Anime Series With The Best Opening and Ending Songs

Updated on January 10, 2015

A true otaku does not simply skip the opening and ending songs of anime series because an anime experience is never, ever complete without them. The way the anime songs are directed usually impresses me, especially the way the songs try to tell you how the series will progress but not to the point where the plot will be spoiled... most of the time.

For me, the best anime songs are those that truly connects its music to the story, through its lyrics, style and melody.

Because a good soundtrack is what makes an anime series truly complete, I present to you my list of anime series with the best opening and ending themes or songs. Note that all of the titles I've written below are in my Highly Recommended Anime hub as well (except for Gintama) which goes to show that a lot of the best anime series are produced when a good story line and musical score complement each other.

At the bottom of this list is the Lovely Complex soundtrack with two opening and two ending songs performed by TegoMass and Hey Say 7. Most of the songs in Lovely Complex are romantic and mellow as the plot of the series focuses on the love story between a tall female protagonist (Koizumi Risa) and a short male protagonist (Otani Atsushi).

Every time I play my Lovely Complex playlist, the sweet melodies make me remember the bittersweet moments of Risa and Otani :)

  • Opening Song 1 - Kimi + Boku = LOVE - Performed by TegoMass
  • Opening Song 2 - Hey! Say! - Performed by Hey Say 7
  • Ending Song 1 - Kiss ~Kaerimichi no Love Song - Performed by TegoMass
  • Ending Song 2 - Bon Bon - Performed by Hey Say 7

In 14th spot is a tie between 2 anime series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, both with only one opening and one ending song.

Cowboy Bebop was internationally acclaimed not just for its story but also for its soundtrack, which was influenced by western jazz and blues music. The opening song entitled Tank! was mainly an instrumental piece (and was my mobile ringtone for a period of time). The ending song The Real Folk Blues had a melancholic feeling to it, owing to the fact that Cowboy Bebop subtly deals with existential themes of loneliness and solitude.

  • Opening Theme 1 - Tank! - Performed by The Seatbelts
  • Ending Theme 1 - The Real Folk Blues - Vocals by Mai Yamane

While Cowboy Bebop is all jazz and blues, the style of Samurai Champloo including its soundtrack is generally hip hop. The music is somehow reflective of the journeys of the three protagonists, Fuu, Mugen and Jin, and similar to Bebop, has a solitary air to it.

  • Opening Theme 1 - Battlecry - Performed by Nujabes
  • Ending Theme 1 - Shiki no Uta - Performed by MINMI

If I were to describe the Cardcaptor Sakura themes, I'd say that it is generally sweet, light and gentle. The melodies are far from jolly but are not really sorrowful either. Overall, the Cardcaptor Sakura soundtrack somewhat calms the listener and personally, I enjoy listening to my CCS playlist whenever I am studying or reading light texts.

  • Opening Theme 1 - Catch You Catch Me - Performed by Gumi
  • Opening Theme 2 - Tobira wo Akete - Performed by ANZA
  • Opening Theme 3 - Platinum - Performed by Maaya Sakamoto
  • Ending Theme 1 - Groovy - Performed by Kohmi Hirose
  • Ending Theme 2 - Honey - Performed by Chihiro
  • Ending Theme 3 - Fruits Candy - Performed by Kohmi Hirose

Opening and ending themes of Nodame Cantabile sound light and aspirational as the story revolves around the lives of two musically inclined characters, Chiaki and Nodame, who are trying to make a name in the world of music. Listening to the Nodame Cantabile soundtrack usually improves my mood :)

Nodame Cantabile

  • Opening Theme 1 - Allegro Cantabile - Performed by Suemitsu & The Suemith

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood songs are heavy and sorrowful both in lyrics and melody. The songs itself are highly narrative of Ed and Al's painful journey in recovering what they lost from alchemy. Although heavy and sorrowful, FMA brotherhood songs emanates a strong desire which I think is somehow reflective of the strong wills of FMA brotherhood characters.

Despite being a classic, the Rurouni Kenshin opening and ending themes are still considered to be one of the greatest anime series soundtracks of all time. Most of the opening songs are livelier and full of hope while most of the ending songs sound lonelier but are sometimes gentle or dense.

The story of Katekyo Hitman Reborn was light in the beginning, and, like its music, became heavier as the anime series progressed. The opening and ending songs were becoming better and better and by the time Byakuran entered the scene, the soundtrack has improved so much and I finally felt the coherence of the plot and the music. My personal favorite is Going Under Ground's Listen to the Stereo, the 8th opening theme of the series.

  • Opening Theme 1 - Drawing Days - Performed by Splay

Naruto Shippuden songs feel differently per arc. Sometimes the songs feel just right for some story arcs, at times it feels too light. Nonetheless it perfectly captures the characters' emotions and struggles. Several songs feel heavy as darkness continue to loom over Naruto Shippuden's plot (yeah, new villains appear and Sasuke slips further and further away from Naruto and Sakura). But Naruto grows stronger, new adventures continue and new bonds form, and I feel like a lot of songs reflect that, especially those that give off light and hopeful melodies. One example and among my favorites are Jitensha by Ore Ska Band. I just feel all sorts of contradicting emotions while listening to Shippuden songs.

The opening and ending songs of Death Note are beautifully dark and powerful which perfectly resonates the plot and themes of the anime series. The soundtrack, characterized by heavy metal and gothic rock was a perfect musical narration for the Death Note series.

  • Opening Theme 1 - The World - Performed by Nightmare
  • Opening Theme 2 - What's Up People?! - Performed by Maximum the Hormone
  • Ending Theme 1 - Alumina - Performed by Nightmare
  • Ending Theme 2 - Zetsubo Billy - Performed by Maximum the Hormone

Opening and ending songs of Code Geass, both seasons 1 and 2 are undeniably those of the best. Colors, which was performed by Flow, was recognized as one of the most popular songs when the series was still airing in Japan. Its ending songs also have a distinct style compared to the usual Japanese anime music owing to the unique musical style of ALI PROJECT who performed a couple of songs in a dark, neoclassical style.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

  • Opening Theme 1 - Colors - Performed by Flow
  • Opening Theme 2 - Kaidoku Funou - Performed by Jinn
  • Opening Theme 3 - Hitomi no Tsubasa - Performed by Access
  • Ending Theme 1 - Yuukyou Seishunka - Performed by Ali Project

We are now down to spot no. 4!

For the anime series with the fourth best soundtrack (in my opinion at least) and with a total of only six OP and ED songs combined (two OPs and four EDs), I give you Soul Eater!

Soul Eater's two opening themes have a beautifully dark tone to it, especially Papermoon by TommyHeavenly6. The styles of the four ending themes are different but for my special pick, I think I'll go with I Wanna Be by Stance Punks. The thing that I especially like about Soul Eater is the fact that despite the series having this dark and sinister aura to it, the characters are still able to make the audience feel the warm and gentle side of the story, very much like its music.

  • Opening Theme 1 - Resonance - Performed by T.M. Revolution
  • Opening Theme 2 - Papermoon - Performed by TommyHeaveny6
  • Ending Theme 1 - I wanna Be - Performed by Stance Punks
  • Ending Theme 2 - Style - Performed by Kana Nishino
  • Ending Theme 3 - Bakuso Yume Uta - Performed by DIGGY-MO'
  • Ending Theme 4 - Strength - Performed by Abingdon Boys School

3. FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST 2003 br br | Source

Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 is one of those anime series with opening and ending songs that are equally amazing as the anime series itself. The Brotherhood soundtrack was indeed good, but that was nowhere as amazing as this. Like the 2009 series of course, the music has this heavy and sorrowful tone to it but in terms of its narrative power and melody, the 2003 opening and ending songs project a stronger and more powerful Edward and Alphonse while retaining the dark and sorrowful tone of the plot, compared to the 2009 songs' more melancholic projection of Ed and Al.

  • Opening Theme 1 - Melissa - Performed by Porno Graffiti
  • Opening Theme 2 - READY STEADY GO - Performed by L'Arc~En~Ciel
  • Opening Theme 3 - UNDO - Performed by Cool Joke
  • Opening Theme 4 - Rewrite - Performed by Asian Kung-Fu Generation
  • Ending Theme 1 - Kesenai Tsumi - Performed by Nana Kitade
  • Ending Theme 2 - Tobira no Mukou e - Performed by Yellow Generation
  • Ending Theme 3 - Motherland - Performed by Crystal Kay
  • Ending Theme 4 - I Will - Performed by Sowelu

2. NARUTO (2002)

top lower left
top lower left | Source

Naruto (2002) started as a really sad narrative. Naruto was alone and he literally struggled throughout the beginning of the series. But as we grew to love this naughty, knuclehead ninja, so did the other characters fell for his charm. The opening and ending songs of Naruto perfectly captured all these emotions, including all the characters' pain, joy and struggles. One of my favorites would be Kanashimi no Yasashisa ni (and I can't help but remember Neji as a young boy during the Chuunin exams - and now my tears won't stop falling!). Shippuden songs were good but Naruto (2002) OST still feels way superior and is real worthy of being on the second spot!

  • Opening Theme 1 - R★O★C★K★S - Performed by Hound Dog
  • Opening Theme 2 - Haruka Kanata - Performed by Little by Litte
  • Opening Theme 3 - Kanashimi no Yasashisa ni - Performed by Asian Kung Fu Generation

And now, I present to you the anime series with the best opening and ending songs, Bleach! I think that every single song is perfect for every arc it represents. Certain times, I even find the songs more compelling and emotion-filled than the story itself. Although Bleach songs widely vary, Bleach music has a generally sad, dark and ominous feel to it. Aqua Timez, YUI, and Sunset Swish have performed a couple of songs for the Bleach series.

Personally, I woulda put Bebop at número uno.

I also woulda said Trigun and Akira, but hey, no real complaints.

Guess you could say I just "Don't Bother None."

Another informative hub - though maybe a tad media heavy. Still, glad to see you still hubbing about anime! Myself, my favourite themes are Sakura Kiss from Ouran High School Host Club and See-no from YuYuShiki. These ones are pretty good too though!
