Top Sci-Fi Movies

Updated on September 15, 2012
The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games | Source

As I watched many Sci-Fi movies recently, I am going to share some of my favorites. Sci-Fi stands for Science Fiction. It usually includes future technologies that are not possible in the present. It includes subjects like aliens, universe, planets, time travel, superhuman etc.

Here’s the list:

The Hunger Games

In the movie, The Hunger Games is actually an event organized by the Capitol where 12 districts participate. The Capitol selects a boy and a girl from each district to represent their district. The last participant alive wins the event. Katniss Everdeen, the main character, participates instead of her younger sister. It is a movie where you feel ‘curious’ about what’s going to happen next.

Battleship

NASA tries to communicate with a planet with the hope of life on it. Unfortunately, this results to an attack on the Earth. A fleet of Navy ships battles the alien spacecrafts. This movie includes the subject Aliens. It has an interesting story with many twists you didn’t expect would occur.

John Carter

This is an amazing movie. John Carter gets transported to Mars (Barsoom) and his journey of saving the city Helium and its princess starts. It has a unique story. It features Taylor Kitsch, the actor who played the main role in Battleship.

Men in Black 3

The series of Men in Black is a favorite of everybody. After ten years, another Men in Black movie was released. This movie was not amazing, but it was worth the time and money. The story is all about saving Agent K by going back to the past. You will know a great secret in the end!

The Avengers

The Avengers is a Superhero movie, but it has more than one Superhero. Nick Fury requests some of the greatest superheroes to form a team and save the world from Loki. You will be seeing The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America in the movie. I planned to see the movie because it had Iron Man included. As we all know, superhero movies have a happy ending!

Inception

Although a 2010 movie, I watched it recently. One of the best movies of all time and the best Sci-Fi movie of course, Inception is all about Dreams. People (not all) can ‘live’ dreams and construct their own environment in them. One of these people, who is a thief, is provided the toughest task. He must plant an idea in a person’s mind using dreams.

Although, the movie has a storyline that is difficult to understand. My friend had to watch it 5 times to understand it. I too haven't understood some of the parts. This is the first movie to have such a story based on dreams. If you do not understand who entered into who's dream, you can read this.

Real Steel

Real Steel is a movie about Robot Boxing. Robots replace the humans, and the boxing is real. People, with their robots, can challenge other people’s robots for matches. A kid finds a robot in the garbage area who leads it to beat the World Robot Boxing champion Zeus with his father. It’s an amazing and encouraging movie.

Wall-E

Wall-E, a robot that collects garbage and waste, meets another robot, Eve that lands on Earth to check whether the life can exist in Earth. Wall-E, being a robot, falls in love with Eve. Later, he becomes the one to continue life on Earth. The movie is emotional, funny and amazing!

2012

It is a movie all about December 21, 2012, the day the humanity nearly comes to an end. It has exciting and frightening scenes of the world ending. I have watched it more than 15 times and I wouldn’t mind watching it once more.

I, Robot

This movie features Will Smith. The world has advanced and it has advanced robots that have ‘feelings’ in them. A supercomputer, V.I.K.I., turns them all against the humans and controls them to destroy the humanity. Will Smith tries his best to save the Earth from these robots.

Though not Sci-Fi movies, you should watch the following too:

- Wrath of Titans

- 300

- The Shawshank Redemption

- Fingerprints

- 8 Mile

- How to Train a Dragon

- The Dark Knight

- The Dark Knight Rises

- Puss in Boots

- Rio

- Ice Age 4: The Continental Drift

- Home Alone (1, 2, 3, 4)

I will update the list soon. Hope you liked the movies.

Have an awesome holiday!

      Hi Domenick,

I agree that Avatar is one of the most popular Sci-Fi movies. I have recently watched a lot of Sci-Fi movies, so I created this hub to let other Sci-Fi fans know more about such movies. This is not an 'official' list and I have not arranged the list in any order. These were my 'favorite' Sci-Fi movies and they are certainly popular all over the world. Therefore, I named them 'Top Sci-Fi Movies'.

Also, I will be updating the hub soon. The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (Batman) are not Sci-Fi movies, but they are great movies. I must say that The Dark Knight Rises is the best movie of 2012. Thanks for reading!

I am surprised Avatar did not make this list.

Sadly I have been very unimpressed with many of the "Sci-Fi" films out lately. Even Hunger Games which people love, I felt was over rated. It was good but I did not think it was Amazing.

Although I agree that the Superhero films like Avengers and Nolan's Batman (didn't make your list) have been fantastic. It just seems like many movies are using special effects and gimmicks like 3D to sell a movie rather than a good story with strong acting that can hold up in any genre. Inception has amazing visuals but was also a strong story with a wonderful cast.
