Traditional Irish Music Sessions in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area

Updated on April 30, 2013

If you live in the Washington DC metropolitan area and are like me and enjoy listening to traditional Irish music you are in luck as there are plenty of places throughout DC, MD and VA where you can sit back relax and listen to good tunes.

McGinty’s Public House, Silver Spring, MD

Located in the heart of Silver Spring’s downtown district McGinty’s is by far my favorite Irish Session in the area and not just because I live within walking distance. This group of musicians show unbridled joy for the music they play. Every Tuesday night beginning at 8:00 this group of musicians, many of whom have been playing together for years, gather upstairs and play for about 3 hours. The group is very friendly and often engage the audience by asking for requests. New musicians are always welcome.

The Limerick Pub, Wheaton, MD

Located a few miles down the road from McGinty’s, the Limerick Pub also offers a weekly session. This one takes place on Wednesday evenings and starts between 7:30 and 8:00 and runs until about 11:00. The Limerick Pub is not as big as McGinty’s and the session is a bit smaller, but the music is just as good.

The Royal Mile Pub, Wheaton, MD

The Royal Mile Pub is more of a Scottish Pub but on the 4th Sunday of each month they host a traditional Irish Music Session. The Music starts at 5:30 and new musicians are welcome.

Nanny O’Brien’s Pub, Washington, DC.

Located in the Woodley Park section of Washington DC, this is the longest running session in the area. Every Monday at 9:00 this group gather to play tunes in the back of the pub. There is no designated leader of the group and new musicians are always welcome.

This sessions convenes every Monday at 9:00 pm. Musicians of all skills are welcome to join in during this session.

Auld Shebeen, Fairfax, VA

In general this session is for imtermediate players, but on the thirst Saturday of each month beginners are welcome. The general rule of thumb at this session is that if you need sheet music this is not the session for you. The session convenes every Saturday from 1-3 pm in the Yeats Library.
