Who are the 'Guardians of the Galaxy'?

Hi there, welcome. If you are thinking, "who the hell are these so-called 'Guardians of the Galaxy?'", well then you are in luck. I'm going to try and break it down for you so that you have a good idea about who they are, what they do, and what their motivations are, by the time the movie releases in a theater near you. When Marvel announced in 2012 that after 'The Avengers', its next big movie release consisting of a group of superheroes was going to be in 2014 called 'Guardians of the Galaxy', a lot of people were thinking 'Guardians who?'. But don't worry, I'm going to clear that up for you. Why? Because its a Marvel movie! So it's definitely gonna make some money and it's gonna be famous anyway so you might as well get to know something about it.

The Guardians of the Galaxy is a group of superheroes who are actually a bunch of misfits in space and are forced to come together so that they can combat threats that are about to attack the universe. The group consists of five superheroes - Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. They will be forced to come together to stop the combined threats coming from Ronan the Accuser, Yondu, Nebula and Korath the Pursuer who are working for The Collector who is also working for Thanos (the big baddie who was teased at the end credits scene of 'The Avengers'). Thanos is not expected to play a big role as he is being saved for 'The Avengers 3' but don't be surprised if he does show up and might even have a small but important role. The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is directed by James Gunn and it's release date is August 1, 2014.

Let's introduce the main characters and the actors who play them -

Peter Quill aka Star-Lord is played by Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) and he is a half-human, half-alien from earth who was taken away from our planet sometime in the 80's. He listens to his walkman a lot which is his only connection to earth and all the things he lost, hence he is very protective of it. He starts out as an introverted person who eventually becomes the leader of the group.

Gamora is played by Zoe Saldana (Avatar) and she is the adopted daughter of Thanos and was working along with Ronan, Yonda, Nebula and The Collector, and then she eventually decides to join the Guardians and try to stop these villains from destroying the universe. She will be played by Saldana not in CGI but just in green make-up.

Drax the Destroyer is played by Dave Bautista (The Man with the Iron Fists) aka Batista, the WWE wrestler and he is a warrior looking for a way to exact vengeance against Ronan who killed his family. This is what gives me hope for the movie because Batista is known as Batista 'The Animal' to WWE fans who know that his best wrestling storylines have come when he is allowed to unleash himself on the screen. Considering the fact that Drax the Destroyer is a character who is living in a rage always to find a way for vengeance, this could be Batista's best role ever and also maybe his break out role as well.

Rocket Raccoon, since he is a talking raccoon that has an explosive personality and loves shooting up stuff, will be created by CGI and will be voiced by Bradley Cooper (The Hangover). He is a genetically modified raccoon who is an expert marksman and is a master tactician. Considering the fact that he is a brash kind of character and hence is easily marketable to children, he could end up being the most loved of all the characters in the movie.

Groot, since he is a tree like humanoid, will be created by CGI and will be voiced by Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious) who also provided motion capture for this character. Groot is only capable of saying one line 'I am Groot' and he expresses himself by saying that same line in different ways. He is Rocket Raccoon's best friend and also called as his "house plant/muscle"!

The other characters in the movie are -

Ronan aka Ronan the Accursed who is played by Lee Pace and he is trying to capture the Guardians so that he can help his master Thanos to conquer the universe or have it all for himself.

Yondu who is played by Micheal Rooker and he is a blue-skinned hunter who has a kind of sixth sense useful for capturing prey.

Nebula who is played by Karen Gillan and she is the main female villain and it is said that she has some kind of a secret connection in the past with Gamora and she is trying to capture the Guardians as well.

Korath aka Korath the Pursuer who is played by Djimon Honsou and he is someone who is working for Ronan who is working for Thanos.

Taneleer Tivan aka The Collector who is played by Benicio Del Toro and he is a mysterious character with hidden villainous intentions.

Rhomann Dey who is played by John C. Reilly and he is an officer in the Nova Corps (an intergalactic force that tries to protect the universe).

Nova Prime Rael who is played by Glenn Close and she is the leader of the Nova Corps.

There is also a Nova Corps officer played by Peter Serafinowicz who was also the voice of Darth Maul in George Lucas's Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace and it also has many other actors playing unspecified roles in the movie.

And now that that's all done, let us move on to the trailer...

Trailer Review and Analysis

Now before you start singing 'ooga chakka ooga chakka ooga ooga ooga chakka' uncontrollably, let me break it down for you and try to do an analysis of the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.

00:06 to 00:39 - There is clearly an Indiana Jones inspired sequence in the movie and surprisingly, it is really easy to imagine Harrison Ford in this scene and hence could sell the adventure side of the story. Notice Star-Lord's deadpan, humourous exchange with Djimon Honsou's Korath who looks at him like he is wondering "who the hell is this guy" and it's obvious that it won't take much to sell this movie to a family audience. Could that thing that he is trying to steal be what puts the whole story into motion? You won't have to wait long to find out.

00:40 to 00:41 - And with that, it's now obvious that there has never being another 'Marvel movie' like this and then we can see the Marvel Studios logo just to confirm to the audience that this really is a Marvel movie and then we move to the middle part of the trailer.

00:42 to 01:31 - In this middle part of the trailer, two Nova Corps officers played by John C. Reilly and Peter Serafinowicz give us an introduction to the main characters. First up is Drax the Destroyer who is clearly looking serious and ready to unleash his rage, followed by Gamora who smiles when the officer says that she is a wanted assassin, followed by Rocket Raccoon who when the officer says that he is wanted for over 50 counts of vehicular theft, just spits on the floor like a totally brash character, followed by Groot who has to stoop down so that he can be seen fully on the officer's screen, followed by Star-Lord who shows clearly that he has an attitude problem and shows an offensive gesture at the officers just to make it clear to the audience that he is no hero like you ever have seen before. Till now this was like an introduction trailer for the general audience who wouldn't know these characters. And now that that's done...

01:32 to 01:33 - now we get to see the entire team as one unit. Could this be the beginning of a brand new multimedia franchise (read: money spinner) for Marvel? And now that that's done...

01.33 to 02:31 - the real trailer begins... With shots of all the characters (note the shot with Rocket Raccoon and Groot having a fight inside what looks like a prison and also Batista being held up in the air by a villain) and action sequences coming one after the other and moving across the screen with such a blistering speed, all of which is there to surely make it clear to you that this is the next big movie that you should watch and hence they are trying to entice you and you certainly should think about going along with it and watch this movie on August 1, 2014.

P.S. The first trailer can be seen on Marvel's Youtube page as well but it's the same one as the premiere so i'm not posting it again here. I have added 2 more trailers down below. They are both extended trailers of Guardians of the Galaxy so they will definitely have something new in them from the film. The extended trailer 2 has the most footage and so, maybe that is the best trailer to see, so definitely don't miss that one.

It won't take much time for the Guardians of the Galaxy to come to your galaxy and to your nearest movie screen. So wish you all the best, have fun and be there on that day. And who knows? Very soon, these guys may end up becoming just as famous as 'The Avengers'! See you and take care. You're Welcome!
